State Visit from the President of the United States: June 3-5, 2019

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
US President and 1st Lady visit 10 Downing Street.

Ivanka has nothing in common with Harry and Meghan. Ivanka Trump works for a presidential administration pushing one of the largest rollbacks on women’s rights in American history. The Duchess of Sussex rightfully criticized the administration as misogynistic before she joined the royal family and I can’t imagine Harry was pleased to be there.

He did his duty, appropriately. But let’s not whitewash who Ivanka Trump is or what she does. Even before she supported her father’s policies, she oversaw companies that relied heavily on sweatshop labor and exploitation of women and children.

How are the misogynistic? We are supposed to back up statements with evidence.

How? State some evidence.

For the banquet just want to say: Sophie finally got the tiara upgrade she deserve! :D:D
Who did Sophie escort in to the dinner? I can't find any pictures. I'm fascinated about who goes with whom and what number are they in line. What's the protocol? Sophie is the DiL of the queen so not sure where she falls in that line for these formal events. Of course the queen is first, then Charles, then William but after that it gets fuzzy for me.

Of the American contingent Ivanka was the best dressed by FAR...of the Brits, the Countess of Wessex.

Not IMO an especially stellar evening in sartorial terms...

I agree...I thought Ivanka looked amazing and Melania right after her. Not sure what happened with Camilla and Kate but disappointing ..wasn't wowed by Anne's dress either.

I did love seeing the gloves come out and be worn.

Well, its a shame this visit went forward.

The BRF have all been gracious, of course.

Camilla's cheeky wink was trending today lol

On a light note regarding Camilla's cheeky wink: As they were preparing for the photos, the photographer tried to get Trump to stand next to Camilla and he (Trump) didn't and instead motioned Charles to stand next to Camilla - maybe that was Camilla's cheeky reaction to that.

This has given me the fear. The NHS is not perfect but I will take that over what America has.

Have you actually lived here and used our health care? If not then how do you know?

I've had very good health care my whole life so have a great many ppl here...and there is a reason Europeans come to the U.S. for various medical procedures.

Anyone here capable of discussing the info out today on the trade negotiations and what was said without bringing up personal comments about Trump? I'd love to hear what a Brit has to say that can objectively look at the context and leave the personalities out of it.

Yes I agree. At my age of 77, I can honestly say that my health care has always been very good. My friends also have no complains. The only complains I ever hear about are from the media and that depends on who is president at the time.

The American ambassador has mentioned this already.

UK law prohibits the NHS to be negotiated in trade deals so it's a nonstarter

The NHS as a public service couldn't be sold but in any trade deal with the US, access to private contracts (worth billions) within the NHS could be 'on the table'. It's a complex situation & this thread probably isn't the place to discuss it.

If you want to know how much the NHS comment by Trump is a 'red rag to a bull' to British people, look no further than the Conservative party leadership candidates rushing to twitter to assure the public that the NHS won't become a bargaining chip if they become PM.

Agree, this most interesting side-aspect of this visit, belong IMO under the Brexit thread, as it is a consequence of Brexit.
I should love to learn more!
I can imagine several ways to "circumnavigate" the NHS-reservations, should it become necessary.

There was a lot more said than the one comment about the NHS. That's not the focus.

Don't want to go into it so much, but as someone who grew up in US and having family in other countries, our health system is NOT so great. While US has a lot of expertise in invasive methods, it's due to unnecessary and overly wide use of them. Which does not mean it's a great healthcare system. We also have the highest maternal and infant mortality rate in the developed world, so we definitely have a lot of problems.

It wouldn't surprise me one of the biggest items on there relating to healthcare in trade negotiations would start with drug prices. It would have far more implications than just in UK itself if it is indeed part of the trade agreement.

And this all came up because of the press conference Trump held with Theresa May, which is part of the state visit. Maybe mods can give clarification on how this should be discussed?

Let's not get off topic please...the respons might hurt and no healthcare in your US or the British Isles can prevent that...None of you nor our British Friends come near our Dutch system, any time!!

After Brexit NHS will have to be dealed with as subsidies from Brussels will stop and how are our lovely British people going to deal c.q. pay with / for that?Johnson and Farage didn't think all too well on that one,nor anything else for that matter. But anyway,Melania looks really nice today, honestly, she does her best.:flowers:

Let's move on from discussing US healthcare and the NHS, please.

Does anyone know who the African American woman in the black dress and orange shawl is? She appeared to be wearing 2 orders and was accompanied by the Duke of York.

Dame Vivian Hunt holds dual British and American citizenship. She was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2018.

Miss Hunt is the managing partner of McKinsey & Companies in the UK.

Sophie was escorted by Britain’s Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, David Lidington.

:previous: Princess Anne wore evening gloves. I thought the Trump ladies looked OK in theirs.

Why did Donald Trump wear his waistcoat so far below his jacket? Is it an American thing?

No. For all his wealth he has no taste. And no one who tells him how to dress. He knows all. He often looks like and unmade bed. Look at his hair.

Did you see the wink from HRH The Duchess of Cornwall? LOL

Harry not attending the state dinner is not untoward or even the snub that the Sun and DM are desperately trying to make it. And it has nothing to do with his position in the line of succession given people wayyyy far below him attend. Even Charles has missed some of them over the years and the Cambridges rarely do anything for state visits but the state dinner and them attending the dinners is a fairly recent thing. I imagine that if Meghan had not just given birth, Harry and Meghan would both have been in attendance for the state dinner.

But given his son is barely a month old, Harry probably is trying to minimize his number of full days away from home. Hence, afternoon lunch to do his "part" and then home.

I would expect we will see the Sussexes at most state dinners going forward, if they are not on tour or maternity leave.

Goodness, Meghan has been seen once in nearly 3 months, but the tabloids continue to find ways to make her and/or Harry the story even when there is plenty of other fodder at hand.

it´s interesting to read that, especially american posters, desperately try to explain that Harry not attending this banquet had nothing to do with Trump as a person and that this had only to do with his wife having given birth 1 month ago. You wish...!
Almost everyone of us "know" about Prince Harrys character and personality; everything he believes in, every cause important to him - or his wife- are in deep contradiction to the current US president. On top of that this president insulted his beloved wife before!

So why would it be so unthinkable to you that he simply didn´t want to be there - especially as he had done his duty by attending the lunch - his grandmother not insisting on it...?!

Harry was scheduled to attend the lunch on Monday and he did. He was not scheduled to attend the Banquet; if he was scheduled to attend, he would’ve been there. Meghan was not scheduled to attend any of the events; she gave birth less than a month ago.

William and Kate were scheduled to attend the Banquet and they did. They were not scheduled to attend the lunch and they did not.

This fixation on Harry/Meghan is a whole other level of craziness?
