State Visit from the President of the United States: June 3-5, 2019

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Are they the only members of the RF whore have been invited to the return Dinner?

It's actually a higher delegation than for most return dinners. For example the princess royal represented HM at the Spanish state visit and mostly it seems up to the duke and duchess of Gloucester

Piers Morgan tweeting away that The Queen, Charles, Harry and Meghan should tune into his interview with Trump tomorrow. I can only imagine...

It's either two things. - it's a hit piece Piers hopes would get Meghan thrown out of the BRF, now that Tom Sr is virtually useless to him now, or Piers is doing clean up for Trump for Nasty gate. I wouldn't be surprised if Trump is afraid he got on the wrong side of the queen over this and the American media has dragged Trump for this.

Was there a return dinner at the Spanish state visit ? I don't recall there being one.

Trump's visit has been a huge success so far. He wouldn't risk losing it by going for Piers' bait on Meghan, would he ? I hope not.

I don’t think there was, RF Website doesn’t say anything. There wasn’t one for the Dutch visit either I think.

I can't recall, but there was a big to do hosted by the Lord Mayor and City of London Corporation for the Spanish visit. That was a big trade visit though so it made sense to have a large business dinner. The Princess Royal attended.

There was a return visit when the Obama's visited though, but I do not believe there was one for the Chinese.

There were no return events by the King of Spain and the King of the Netherlands, for mysterious reasons. And that is a pity as especially the Dutch love to pack out with spectacular venues and great efforts, like at the Petit-Palais in Paris or at the Sydney Opera House. We could have trusted WA & Máxima to hire the Claridge's or another venue for a spectacular evening. Maybe it is the age of the British Queen which caused the ultra-short royal State Visits by King Felipe and King Willem-Alexander.

Nope. You are talking about the Guildhall banquet , where the foreign guests, escorted by a Royal couple, are hosted by the Lord Mayor of London.
A return dinner is totally different as the foreign guests are hosting, generally at their Embassy or Ambassador residence.
It's quite a lost tradition nowadays. In fact the last return dinner in the UK was given by Obama back in 2011.

I remember a really deep courtesy by the princess royal and thought it was at the return dinner but could be mistaken.

Thanks for clearing it up. That's indeed what I was talking about. Why are there no longer return dinners but Guildhall banquets instead?

The Mirror apparently has seen the interview. Her wrote about the Sussex section. Piers Morgan definitely played up the "nasty" stuff and Trump basically said he didn't call Meghan nasty but her words at the time and that he think she is doing a fine job. He also says that Harry was not closed off and was friendly and talked a lot to Ivanka at the lunch. Not clickbait comments from Trump. I'm glad he didn't fall for the bait.

At time there were both, or a State Lunch at the Guildhall and a return banquet in the evening.
I guess the main reason for the loss of this nice tradition is time. State visits now last 48 hours instead of 3 or 4 days in the good ol days.

Usualoly there is not returnj Events at incoming State Visits to the UK as in most cases on the second eveniong is the Guildhall Banquet and the the Visits ends in the afternoin of the third day.

@ACO - I read the article and it looks like Ivanka and the aides told Trump to clean up that mess especially with stories coming out that Harry kept a wide berth from Trump after the comments. Piers was trying to bait Trump to trash the Sussexes and he didn't take it.

Thanks Victoria B for the link. The ladies all looked lovely even casper the friendly ghost. Ho ho. As you say Al bina she tried really hard.
I love the golden eagle name card holders on the tables. It looked like a lovely and relaxed evening.

Ivanka looks amazing. Melania’s gown looks very similar to the one she wore on their last official visit to the UK.

Ivanka looks fabulous. Much better than last night? Who did the seating chart? Sarah Huckabee Sanders next to Prince Charles?

I thought that was interesting as well lol.

I though all three ladies, Camilla, Melania and Ivanka looked better than at the banquet, although I think Ivanka looked good at the banquet. Tux also suits the President better than tails (or his tux just fits better). Charles looks dapper in tails or tux.

I was a bit concerned at Mr Johnson's gown. Maybe the Queen needs to warn the Swan Uppers to keep an eye out for some of her swans missing half their feathers (lol).

I'm not surprised that President Trump had agreed to grant an interview with Piers Morgan at all. When Trump had a working visit to the UK and met with the Queen at Windsor Castle a year ago, Morgan met with Trump on Air Force One for an interview and I thought it was a very well done article and contained so much information about Air Force One and the costs of a foreign visit. It even included a picture of the presidential M&Ms. I'll include the link to the interview if anyone is interested. :D

Piers Morgan *can* be a good interviewer if he keeps his own personal opinions out of things. If it is true that Morgan did try to "bait" Trump on the subject of the Sussexes, I do hope that Trump had the diplomacy to avoid that issue like the plague. It became obvious to me from the first interview that Morgan does hold a modicum of respect for President Trump and I hope that continues in this upcoming interview to be aired. Judge for yourselves from the interview from 2018.

IMO She invited Harry for lunch, and invited William&Kate for Dinner - it is called division of labour. Most of those Royals who were at the Banquet were not at the Lunch.

I saw the following royals at the lunch:

The Queen, Charles, Camilla, Harry, Andrew, Anne, Richard, Birgitte and Edward Kent.

Of those only Harry didn't also attend the Banquet.

The additions to the Banquet who I didn't see at the lunch (but they may have been there) were Edward, Sophie, Micheal, Marie-Christine and Alexandra.

That means that 8/9 who attended the lunch also attended the banquet while only an additional 5 attended the banquet who may not have attended the lunch (the video footage didn't show everyone who went into the room to look at the stuff and the coverage tended to move around focussing on where the Queen and Mr Trump were rather than showing everyone. You had to look at those in the background to see who was there. I may have missed some of the royals attending the lunch such as the Wessex's or Alexandra.

Ivanka looked a lot better tonight than the shirtwaist dress from last night. The one in the white mu mu with the feathers was hilarious, who is that? Camilla looked impeccable, the gown showcased her gorgeous jewels

You have forgotten the Cambridges who did not attend the lunch but did attend the banquet. Dman and Rudolph will never forgive you:whistling:.

It was the ambassador's wife.

She is the Duchess of Cambridge or, if you want to be informal, Catherine or Kate. “Duchess Kate” is not the correct way to refer to her or any Duchess, I think that’s what was meant. I know it sets my teeth on edge as soon as I see it.

"Kate" is just as incorrect as "Duchess Kate", I´ve never heard Pr. William referring to his wife as Kate. She might be called Kate by some friends, perhaps also by her parents - but this was mainly a fabrication of the tabloids when it became known that she was dated by William. From then on it was Kate here and kate there...
People outside the UK hardly know titles like "The Duchess of Cambridge/Sussex". Just as the average person not interested in royal issues knows who "The Duke of Sussex would be. But when you talk about "Duchess Kate" or "Prince Harry" to others not familiar with royalty they know instantly who you are talking about.
I don´t like that either, but I gather it will remain that way as long as the media refer to them, especially Cath. and Meghan, that way.

The interview has aired this morning, here are some snippets;

Piers really did go in to bait the President but he seems to have been ignored.

I've not seen the interview yet but I did notice that the snippets you posted from the interview are almost word for word statements that President Trump made in his interview with Morgan last year.

On the subject of Harry in 2018 he stated:

‘That’s good!’

‘Do you like Harry?’

‘Yeah I like Harry, I’ve never met him, but I’ve always liked Harry. I like the whole family to be honest, they have a good energy.’

On his mother in 2018 he stated:

"Trump sighed. ‘I was walking up and I was saying (to Melania) “Can you imagine my mother seeing this scene? Windsor. Windsor Castle.” And it was beautiful, it was really beautiful but the Queen is terrific. She is so sharp, so wise, so beautiful. Up close, you see she’s so beautiful. She’s a very special person. And the way she’s conducted herself for so many years. And she’s got a lotta years left."

Well it looks like Prince Charles took full advantage of his time with Donald Trump!

Prince Charles spent 75 minutes longer than scheduled trying to convince Donald Trump of the dangers of climate change but the president still insisted the US was “clean” and blamed other nations for the crisis, the president has revealed.

Trump told ITV’s Good Morning Britain he was due to meet Charles for 15 minutes during his state visit, but the discussion went on for 90 minutes at which the prince did “most of the talking”.

He said: “He is really into climate change and I think that’s great. What he really wants and what he really feels warmly about is the future. He wants to make sure future generations have climate that is good climate, as opposed to a disaster, and I agree.”

But Trump said he pushed back at the suggestion the US should do more.
