The Duchess of Sussex's Maternity Fashion: October 2018 -

I loved her coat again today...cute pants and a bit lower heel than we often see her in as well.

It is not a maternity coat, it is a vintage trapeze style coat. The way the front of the coat is hiked up much higher than the back, it does not accommodate the pregnant figure and retain the original style. Trapeze style was very in then, usually worn with gloves to accentuate the three quarter length sleeves which were part of the look.

In love with the vintage coat. Great look today. :flowers:

This is how to do vintage, pair it with more modern pieces. Vintage/classic looks are great but with a modern twist. Not to look like borrowed from grandma's closet.

She may not be all in black. We cant see what top she is wearing ?

Yes, I think it's a lovely look, right down to the sunglasses, hair and makeup. The swing coat is gorgeous. Here's Meghan's fan and fashion blog takes:

In this photo, we can see how round and chubby Meghan's face is becoming:

For dinner with her friends, Meghan wore the long navy Victoria Beckham coat she wore for Christmas at Sandringham, and she was also seen in it earlier during this New York trip.

While I love this look compared to pretty much anything else she's worn during her pregnancy, I agree that this is not maternity but instead a trapeze style coat. I really would love to know exactly what her aversion to maternity wear is because the truth just simply is that maternity cuts are designed to accommodate the belly and bust changes and fit all the way around. I love the look of the cigarette pants and heels with the not so form fitting top. This is very much a winning look that is still modern, professional, etc. and would look fabulous with a few well chosen maternity tops. I don't think I'll ever be a fan of all black or all black with nude heels but either way, the cigarette pants/heels/flowy or not skintight top looks great for this stage of the pregnancy.

I don't think the super high heel shoes fit her well or her ideals about women to tell the truth.

(..)

She looks simple and comfortable for a long flight. Most important thing here.

The thing is that woman regardless of height most always seem to want to be taller then they actually are, so wearing those sky scraper heels that Meghan wears as does other royals makes them think they are tall yet they are destroying their feet, how do I know this, I did the same and so regret wearing those heels. Now I wear flats or kitten heels sometimes.....(..)

And yes she looked very comfortable for a long flight back to the UK....being comfortable is so very important on those flights as I remember. I do like the color of the coat, would love to see up close though.

It looks to me as though the outfit Meghan is wearing for the flight home is a jumpsuit? Or is it pants with a jacket? Either way, very soft and comfortable for a long flight. I hope it's two pieces, though--I wouldn't want to be dealing with undressing in an aircraft bathroom every time I used the restroom! And at 7+ months pregnant, I'm sure the restroom will be seeing some use.

Looks like track suit/yoga pants with matching jacket. Doesn't scream jumpsuit.

:previous:I think it is active wear-leggings and a jacket. I agree, a jumpsuit can be impractical, especially when your bladder is being squeezed by a growing baby. Meghan looks comfortable for her flight home.

The thread has been cleaned up from a number of off-topic posts. This is not about the Duchess of Sussex's state of mind, pregnancy burdens, her baby shower or the paparazzi. Please remain on topic of this thread. Thank you!

And the dinner outfit, plus the casual outfit Meghan wore on the flight home; the cap is a nod to her friend, Abigail Spencer's tv series, Rectify:

The comments on the above blog show how much women follow Meghan and purchase what she wears that they like.

Yes, a very beautiful coat, something like a swing coat which I just love. I have a vintage leather swing coat in black so should get it out of storage and sear it someday. They are so chic and elegant looking, from the 50's I believe.

Oh, Thank you so much Maia, they are just gorgeous and AH was such a beautiful lady inside and out, one of my all time favorites. I love the last picture of the quilted coat, Meghan would look great in that with her hair up and chic hat with diamonds in her ears.....and long black gloves ..that I can picture in my mind.

:previous: Oh yes, I definitely agree! :heart2:

An Audrey doll, wearing a similar wide coat in pink but with cinched waist, so not cape-like:

Here's an article with a gallery of side-by-side photos showing how Meghan and her design choices are inspired by Audrey's Hepburn's past looks:

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many similar looks to Audrey that could be picked out. And that mention about the eyebrows is interesting too. The main difference is Meghan will surely never go for a short haircut (unless perhaps when she's much older and wishes to adapt). But wearing her hair up on occasion gives Meghan that long-necked Audrey look.

And here's more evidence:

Some of those are a far stretch at best. Kind of like when they compare Kate or Meghan to Diana and 'oh they both wore red'. Wearing a trench is hardly 'copying Audrey'. Or plaid.

There are a few times, like this recent coat, there is a definitely Audrey touch. But some are stretch at best.

Whatever. I'm sure the point of these style features was to look for close matches, not to claim every example is an exact match. As you can see, if you check both articles, there's variation of Meghan outfits from the first article matched with slightly different Audrey looks and vice versa. It's clearly not about exact matches, but about the inspirational style influence and aesthetic that Meghan draws from Audrey Hepburn. That is definitely not a stretch.

I think we can take the beanie and the tartan coat looks with a grain of salt since the royal family often wears tartan. Still, it is interesting that the editors of these features were able to find a photo of Audrey in a tartan outfit. ? Clearly, that is not a style Audrey was especially known for. The main point is: there's obviously an aesthetic Audrey influence that Meghan has been inspired by. Meghan has said so herself.

Read closely, and you will see where it is mentioned that Meghan herself has spoken of being influenced by Audrey Hepburn's style, including the way she shaped her eyebrows. And this influence is also evident in Meghan having selected the design house, Givenchy, to work closely with (Hubert Givenchy designed for Audrey; she was his muse):

The similarity between the wedding dresses is certainly obvious, and has been previously pointed out, post the royal wedding last year.

Fascinating, there’s certainly a strong influence apparent (although I do agree a couple of the examples in the Elle photo gallery are a little over zealous in trying to find a match ). I think their similar petite body shape is one obvious reason Meghan would be drawn to Audrey’s fashion choices. Interesting previous comment about the hair cut though. I imagine that if Meghan were ever to cut her hair she would go for something like an elfin cut, and it would certainly suit her

Right. I was just thinking that sometimes when women get older, they tend to look younger if they cut their hair, rather than continuing to wear it long. I'm not sure about the elfin cut exactly on Meghan, as she has a long chin. But I do think she could rock a short style. Halle Berry looks great with short hairstyles, more-so than long hair, I think.

Meghan appeared in a number of hairstyle/hair product videos; here are two showing a gorgeous updo, and a way to make long hair look shorter:

I would also add in affinity for simply clean lines and timeless and classic style.
