24th of March 1394 : Death of Constance of Castile, Duchess of Lancaster


Constance was the daughter of king Pedro of Castile and the second wife of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster.
Constance died at Leicester Castle and was buried at the Church of the Annunciation of Our Lady of the Newarke in Leicester.
The church was a popular burial site for members of the Lancastrian dynasty but was pulled down in 1540.

The Countess was the mother of Anne Boleyn and the maternal grandmother of Elizabeth I of England.
Lady Elizabeth died a little under 2 years after her daughter's execution and a family disgrace. Her remains were not buried with the Boleyn's in Kent but instead at the Howard family chapel at St. Mary's Church, Lambeth.

Robert III died at Rothesay Castle and soon after his remains were taken to Paisley Abbey for burial which had strong links to the house of Stuarts.
His wife queen Anabella Drummond who had died in 1401 was buried at Dunfermline Abbey.

Following his death the heart of King Richard was buried at Rouen Cathedral in Normandy and his body was taken to Notre Dame de Fontevraud Abbey in Anjou for burial.
The lead box containing the remains of the embalmed heart of the Lionheart was rediscovered in 1838 during restorations.

Its believed Lady Aveline was just 10 years old when she married the second son of Henry III of England. Sadly she died on 10 November 1274 aged 15.
Aveline was Countess of Aumale and Lady of Holderness in her own right.

Marguerite was born into a very powerful noble family her father was René d'Anjou and her mother Isabella, Duchess of Lorraine.
Her paternal aunt was Marie d'Anjou queen of King Charles VII of France so Marguerite was very well connected.

Henry was the son of John of Gaunt ,Duke of Lancaster and Blanche of Lancaster.
His mother Blanche sadly died a little over a year later in September 1368. Her father Henry ,Duke of Lancaster was a great grandson of King Henry III.

Robert II was King of Scots from 1371 until his death in 1390.His remains were taken to Scone Abbey in Perthshire for burial.
The Augustinian abbey survived until 1559 when a Calvinist mob sacked the abbey and destroyed all ornamentation including tombs.

Henry VII was 52 at the time of his death and the recent deaths of his eldest son and wife had greatly impacted him.
The king was buried at the Henry VII Lady Chapel,which work had started on in January 1503 and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
