On this day, December 31, 1705 ~ Demise of Catherine of Braganza, Queen of England, wife of King Charles II of England, at the Palace of Bemposta in Lisbon, Portugal

The dowager queen remained in England until March 1692 and saw the reign of James II come and go and under pressure due to her Catholicism returned to Portugal.

Catherine acted as Regent of Portugal for her brother in 1701 and 1704–05.

From what I read, she had only one pregnancy and miscarried.

The queen's Private secretary was an Irish Catholic, Sir Richard Bellings.
His mother was a Butler and the family had sided with the Royalists during the Cromwellian invasion of Ireland.

The dowager queen was buried at Christ Church Greyfriars in Newgate and her tomb survived until 1538 when the abbey was dissolved and the building suffered terrible iconoclastic damage with tombs and monuments smashed.
The church building survived until the Great Fire of London in 1666 and was later rebuilt only to be destroyed during the Blitz.
