Denmark : Abdication & Accession Day - January 14, 2024

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
The transfer of the colours looks so majestic at night! Truly fairytale-like.

DR report that Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway have arrived at Amalienborg.

No news on the Greeks? At least Anna-Maria?

The colours have been transferred to FX&QMs residence. But the staffs of the chief of court and the Master of Ceremonies have also been transferred.

Another physical symbol of King Frederik now being the commander-in-chief and that his own chief of court and Master of Ceremonies have taken over and they are now the senior members of the staff of DRF.

----------------

And now the royal show is over for today FX&QM will soon enjoy a dinner, presumably also including QMII, Benedikte, Joachim and Jane.

There will be record-breaking fireworks display at Tivoli in an hour.

Now all the visit and travels will start, and the Regent Couple are going to be very busy!

Hi, I have seen this on youtube on a livestream (Sky) and it was quite a turnout! I mean, of course, there is hopefully only one coronation every few decades. Long live the King!

The Rolls Royce was very classy, albeit it looked a bit gangster.

And I had different feelings about Queen Margarethe's abdication, but now I must say, it was a wise decision. Frederik was so moved by the masses! And he had the emotional freedom to take it all in and to enjoy it full hearted.

And long live Queen Margarethe! May she shine for many years to come!

There are already speculations as to whether Christian will get a more active role, now that he is Crown Prince.

The first I noticed was the speculation on DR1, where it was assumed that yes, Christian will get a more active role, but not that much - yet.
Also in regards to being Regent.
When the Danish Monarch is out of the country or incapacitated the Crown Prince automatically becomes Regent - unless he too is out of the country, incapacitated - or unavailable.

If he serves aboard a frigate in the North Atlantic he is pretty unavailable, even though he technically is on Danish soil. So it was speculated that while he is in the military or at the university a Rigsforstander will take over, simply because that's more practical and they don't have to send someone to say Aarhus, or wherever he may be studying or try and located him running behind a tank on a muddy field somewhere.

And even though QMII can be Rigsforstander - and probably will at some point, Queen Mary now outranks QMII. So Mary is likely to first choice as Rigsforstander in the future.

The reality is that Mary is quite likely to be with Frederik undertaking many state visits in the next few years so also unavailable. I can see why they made it so Margrethe can still act as Rigsforstander. A new King & Queen on many overseas visits, a Crown Prince still in education / military training etc.

On the live coverage I saw Joachim arriving by car but did he appear again after that at any point?

The speech given by King Frederik X on Jan 14th, 2024 from the Balcony of Christiansborg Palace shortly after his accession:

My mother, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe the 2nd, has ruled Denmark for 52 years. For half a century, she has followed the times with our common heritage as a starting point.

She will always be remembered as a Monarch beyond the ordinary. Like few, my mother has managed to be at one with her kingdom. Today, the throne passes on.

My hope is to become an unifying king of tomorrow. It's a task I've been waiting for all my life. It is a responsibility I take on with respect, pride and great joy.

It is a deed I will take pains to carry out and carry through the position I have been entrusted with.

I need all the support I can get. From my beloved wife, from my family, from you and from that which is greater than us. I face the future knowing that I am not alone.

Bound, committed, for the Kingdom of Denmark.

Thanks, is there a link to the transcripts? I wonder how the prime minister's speech (it sounded as if she was mainly thanking Queen Margrethe and praising King Frederik X, but I am not a Danish speaker) and king's speeches before the proclamation compared to the speeches (if any) at the proclamations in 1972 and earlier.

**My mistake. First monarch since Christian VII (1766 - 1808) to not include God or the Lord.

Christian VIII -- God and the fatherland
Frederick VII -- The people's love, my strength
Christian IX -- With God for honour and justice
Frederik VIII -- The Lord is my helper
Christian X -- My God, my country, my honour
Frederik IX -- With God for Denmark
Margrethe II -- God's help, the people's love, Denmark's strength
Frederik X -- Bounded, committed - for the Kingdom of Denmark.

Frederik VII's motto did not include God or the Lord either.

(..) I wanted to know who the band is that is playing. They are now at one of the palaces, but if a Danish speaker was watching a few minutes ago, they paraded through the streets, where did they originate from?[/QUOTE]

12:00: Changing of the Guard at Amalienborg. The new Guard Detachment of the Royal Lifeguards march from the barracks at Rosenborg Castle to Amalienborg, led by the band [Den Kgl. Livgardes Musikkorps].
The bandmembers are professional musicians and very, very good!

Samples: The Marches of King Frederik IX - Crown Prince Frederik - Crown Princess Mary:

The band did play King Frederik IX's March, but the commentators on DR nattered so much no one couldn't hear the music. I yelled STFU at the screen - after all, it was the last Changing of the Guard for HM Queen Margrethe, and historic moments can speak for themselves.

Is there somewhere where I can watch a replay of everything from this morning? I'd love to watch all of it again.

The fireworks are ON!!

Thank you for sharing this video.

Congratulations to the Kingdom of Denmark and best wishes to TM King Frederik X and Queen Mary.
Tak to all of our Danish posters who have kept us informed since New Year's Eve. Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

It is a pity that she is not on the Balcony too like in NL for example

In the Netherlands it is the abdicating monarch who presents the new monarch to the people and then leaves. In Denmark it's the Prime Minister who does it.

Laenge levet Kongen!

A wonderful day at København, another party ahead, what a happy day and occasion. Though the tradition arises from the old days when immediate succession was important, I always hated the idea that Fred would have to take over while M. body was still warm,
what a cruel thing. We are happy that the QM has chosen to abdicate and avoid this cruel situation for her son, PLUS everybody was able prepare and travel to the capitol today like we did.

Hooray!

I still can't get over the sheer number of people outside Christiansborg. There had to be several thousand people there, if not more.

A congrats from Rufus Gifford, a former - and popular - US ambassador to DK.

Not so much for the kiss, which was great. But Mary's smile.

Isabella, Vincent and Josephine have all been awarded the Order of the Elephant.

That happened the second FX became King, because he is now master of the order and that means his children gets the order.

King Frederik's new cypher revealed. The F’s are for Frederik. And X is the Roman numeral for 10, as he is the 10th King Frederik of Denmark.

Who designed the cypher?

The article says that Margrethe got it awarded automatic at her father's succession in 1947. But then it was not opened yet for woman. So did she really get it then or later?

Thanks, Muhler.

I am surprised that the children were awarded the Order of the Elephant before turning 18, but it is , as you said, the King's prerogative as Sovereign and Grand Master of the Order to knight his children.

Does it work like in Sweden where the royal children are awarded the Order of the Seraphim when they are baptized, but do not wear the insignia until they turn 18? It would be a bit grotesque to see children wearing the sash and star or the collar of the Elephant.

The article indicates that the children of the monarch are automatically members of the Order per the orders charter but they will most likely receive their insignia on their 18th birthday. Perhaps a better informed poster could confirm?

What an emotional day. The pictures of the crowds! Who wouldn't feel teary. The Queen saying God Say the King to her son, wow! Christian at such a young age was poised and happy.
Of course Frederik shed a tear. He has said why hold back tears in happy moments, his wedding, the birth of his children, and now seeing his mother still by his side and he becomes king. Seeing the support of the people, heck got me teary.

Loved his speech.

Includes the people of Denmark and that which is bigger then us. Wonderful!

I've seen many online compare the balcony scene to their wedding. I saw a joyful Frederik and Mary. Of course with nerves in front of all those people, but also natural, loving.

Even before the abdication, the Danes in polls showed confidence in Frederik and both Frederik and Mary as great representatives. Today did not disappoint

Wow!
The behind the scenes. Mary with children looking as Frederik walks onto the balcony as King. Joachim looking on as well.

I'm sure QMargrethe is feeling a lot of things today, but I hope one of the biggest emotions is pride. Frederik and Mary are highly loved by the people, judging by the reception they both got today, so the monarchy is no danger with them at the helm. She can rest easy now knowing everything is in good hands.

Thanks, Saragli.

That makes more sense.
