I must say I have to agree that certain members' criticisms of the bill are lacking in sincerity.
It is possibly of particular interest to members of this forum that the Government offered two justifications for why they continue to support hereditary monarchy even though they oppose hereditary House of Lords membership:
1. No monarch since Queen Anne has withheld Royal Assent from a bill.
2. The constitutional monarchy enjoys popular support.
(If it were me, I would have added that succession to the throne does not exclude women from the office in the way succession to most peerages does, but that is apparently not important to the Government.)
