Unfortunately, there are no paintings of it. There is a book by Antonia Fraser that gives a gorgeous description of the gown. When I have time later I will type it up and post here.

Marie Antoinette was a fascinating figure. What I think it most interesting about her background is her mother, Maria Teresa. She was quite an impressive ruler and for the period one of the few women in Europe so widely praised as being truly "august". Quite a politician and warrior. I think it was Frederick II who, along with Maria Teresa gobbled up huge portions of Poland in 1772, said of his old enemy, MT, that "She wept and wept but she took and took." Wily woman.

Wow!

I never realized just how many grandchildren Le Comte and La Comtesse de Paris had. Between them and the great-grandchildren, that is enough for a few baseball teams.

One could playfully say they could have been the "new" grandparents of Europe....had all their children and grandchildren married other royalty and nobility.

I believe some did marry other members of royalty....I think minor members and others married some aristocrats, but not too sure on the others.

What really fascinates me are the three claims to the French throne, the Orleans, Bourbon, and the Napoleonic claims..
believe the descendents of Napoleon should not have a claim as he essentially stole the throne after he became leader of France and crowned himself Emperor.
