Queen Mathilde Jewels 2: 2022 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
This might be a discussion that needs a separate thread, but what pieces do you think every queen/royal family should have? Aside from the obvious tiaras.

A serious collet necklace would make my list

The Belgian royal Jewels were seriously depleted when Queen Fabiola became queen, almost all historic pieces were gone and slowly the chest has been building up but is still quite poor for a reigning house.

Queen Marie José and her Daughter Marie Gabrielle the Leuchtenberg tiara seller, Princess Lilian and Queen Fabiola should jhave given her jewels to the main Branch . They got money of them !

I could be mistaken, but I think she has worn them before.

Queen Mathilde had those earrings since several years. I think she first wore it during second day kings of Norway 80th jubilee. She definitely wore them during state banquet in Greece and French visit to Belgium.

This may be naive but I’m going to ask anyway! Why hasn’t the Belgian royal house any jewellery that belonged to their first Queen, Louise? Admittedly when she married King Leopold coronets rather than tiaras were in vogue, but surely she must have been given a parure or two by her family as wedding gifts. What happened?

And equally, what happened after Queen Fabiola’s death to her collection? I thought I read that during her lifetime she had promised some important pieces to the main line. Did she change her mind?

Unfortunatelu I am not familiar with late Queen Luise jewels and their story.

But late Queen Fabiola had willed all her possessions to the charity Aid Fund of the Queen, which helps Belgians in need and is currently chaired by Queen Mathilde. The inheritance is estimated to be around € 100 million and includs jewellery. Some jewels late QF gave during her lifetime to her closness like to Mathilde : Wolfers dimond tiara/necklace, diamond pearl earrings, diamond watefall brooch, diamond ruby bracelet, tunisian parure and possibly one of diamond aquamarine bracelets. Princess Marghareta of Liechtenestein got diamond daisies and multigem earrings.

I see, Andrew, thanks. So some of Queen Fabiola’s jewellery has been sold I presume, to benefit this charity Fund, and other pieces were dispersed around the extended family. Well, at least Queen Matilde received some of them.

There is a chance that late QF jewels still lay intact in safe. There was no communicate about the sale. Also royal court some time ago informed that Queen Fabiola jewels stay with the Fund and no decision has been made about them.

It remains to be seen what will happen to Queen Paola's jewelry, especially her Art Deco tiara. Although Queen Paola's personal collection is not as large as Queen Fabiola's, it would be nice if her most significant pieces stayed in the main line.

King Philippe has been buying some new jewelry lately to replenish the collection and not depend on heirlooms only. Queen Mathilde has made appearances for example with new earrings, brooches and necklaces, and Princess Elisabeth got a new substantive tiara on her 18th birthday.

This makes me believe that most of Fabiola's jewelry is gone. Maybe also Paolas. There'd be no need for Philippe to buy new pieces if her/their pieces were in the vault.

They won't go broke buying new stuff. I think Philippe and Mathilde have been very discreet about what they buy so as not to seem ostentatious (or just annoy people). Elisabeth is almost certainly either going to receive another couple of tiaras or have to buy them for herself.

I read somewhere that with Queen Louise and with Queen Henrietta that their respective daughters inherited their jewels.

It’s lovely that the present King is doing some buying of precious jewellery for his wife. I have to say though that traditional pieces of many generations should be the mainstay of a royal collection. I’m a great admirer actually of the Swedish and Netherlands way of distributing their jewellery. All the royal ladies get a loan on tiara occasions but substantive pieces remain in a sort of Foundation so they can’t be sold off or given away to cadet lines or foreign relatives.

Really, that’s interesting! One can understand it with Henrietta as she and Leopold II had a number of daughters who married elsewhere. But Queen Louise only had the one daughter Charlotte/Carlotta. Surely during all those decades when she was locked away insane her jewellery was looked after by her brother. Was her collection given to his daughters too, I wonder.

Leopold was the sort of dude who might have sold his sister's jewelery for the money and considered it recompense for "taking care" of her. :ermm:

Yes, I can well believe that as well!

You can read about fate of some of Queen Louise and Empress Carlotta's jewels in the links below:

It's worth noting that it wasn't unusual for royal ladies to leave most or at least many of their personal jewels to their daughters or granddaughters. This was the case for instance Queen Elizabeth of Belgium and Queen Josefina of Sweden and Norway with the former not being limited by any restrictions of inheritance from a family foundation and the latter having such a staggering amount of pieces that even the part that was left to her sons and the royal house was enough to fill up the Silver chamber from floor to ceiling.

Thank you so much JR. So it does look as if some of the Empress Carlotta’s jewellery was still in the possession of the Belgian Royal House as late as the 1920s and ‘30s. Including that magnificent corsage brooch! So many pieces have been lost to the main line with sales and Funds and bequests to nieces and married daughters over the years in all royal houses including the BRF. even if the dowager Queen concerned left some to the heir. Quite sad really.

It is a given in my opinion that Elisabeth will get an additional wedding gift tiara (from the Belgian nobility if not from her parents), but then I think that will be pretty much it for her until she inherits her mother's and perhaps her grandmother's diadems. If Elisabeth as queen ends up with five or six tiaras (assuming she also gets Paola's bandeau and her mother's 3 tiaras), she will already have more choices than each of her 3 (or even 4 ?) predecessors. Honestly, a Queen of the Belgians doesn't need more than that based on the number of tiara events she has per year. I would actually concentrate more on accessories like colliers, chokers, brooches, earrings, etc, which is what Mathilde has been doing gradually to a certain extent.

The first tiara the Queen Consort wore is the belgian sapphire tiara , belonging to Princess Louise eldest daughter of King Leopold II , and sold for debts !
Belgian Royal jewels , sold , stolen or sold in auctions , going to Charities. A whole story!!

That's quite sad if they are indeed sold and another collection of Belgian jewels dispersed and an empty vault again.

White Pearls are for Funerals ?

She wore the same pearl choker at Prince Philip's memorial service (not exactly a funeral). It looks like it is becoming one of her favorite pieces.

Are the pearl earrings from Queen Fabiola?
