Oh to be a fly on the wall at this particular IOC Session. I wonder how many times, "Who was it again that thought a South Korean Winter Olympics was a good idea?" has been said by now....

When South Korea got the bid for the Winter Olympics in 2011, the present situation in North Korea was something that would have been thought unfathomable at the time. No one knew the impact that North Korea's present leader Kim Jong Un would have on the global situation putting the entire region so close to going off like a firecracker.

As it stands now, South Korea is having trouble selling tickets which is very understandable. Some countries are thinking twice about sending their athletes to compete amid all the tension.

Another ruling that has a big impact is that hockey is a big draw for the winter games. This year its been announced that NHL players are not to participate in the Olympic teams of their countries. So, some real talent is going to be missing from the hockey teams.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what develops as far as these games go.

If there was no covid I suspect she, along with Tim, would have gone as they have done in the past.

I understand Edward was to go but pulled out more due to the Human Rights concerns of China then covid - I suppose he might still make an appearance. They just don't want him standing anywhere near government officials.

Edward normally goes to the Paralympics rather than the Olympics - as the Patron of the British Paralympic Team.

Thanks for the link. It's interesting to see that half of the new members are women born between 1984 and 1988 (the other half are (older) men - born between 1958 and 1962).

One small correction to the post above: the cut-off date for the change from 80 to 70 years old is December 1999 instead of 1990. One of the others that was re-elected was appointed in 1991 and is a few years older than the princess but can still serve again.

Does this mean the Princess Royal can serve another 8 years or does HRH have to step down when she reaches 80?

My interpretation is that they have to step down at the IOC meeting after they turn 80 (or 70 for newer members) - as that seems the relevant date in which new members are received as well as offices coming to an end (only in special circumstances an exception might be proposed). They exact wording in the press release is:
"Fifteen IOC Members arriving at the end of their eight-year term, following their election or re-election in 2016, will be proposed for re-election for another eight years, with the age limit being taken into consideration for the end of the terms (80 for those elected before December 1999 and 70 for those elected after that date):"

I would imagine there is a strong likelihood she’ll step down as a regular member then be appointed an honoury member.

Just like the late Grand Duke Jean was in 1998… That’s very likely i think, given her longtime high-profile involvment

King Willem-Alexander also was appointed an honorary member when he stepped down as regular member when he ascended the throne.
