The "Brits" who stand to make money from the American tourist care about Americans' impressions of the Royal Family as surveys in the States have shown that the Royal Family is a MAJOR draw for traveling Americans to Britain.
Whether it is "ridiculous" or not, the Prince of Wales' handlers are acutely aware of the popularity of the late Princess of Wales and the controversy in the US surrounding the relationship of Camilia Parker-Bowles and the Prince of Wales. Hence the massive pre-trip publicity in the States. They are indeed working very hard to at least soften if not romanticize the couple's status. I think it is very clever strategy.
