I wouldn't say Caroline Kennedy's dress 'stands the test of time'. That usually means timeless. While much better then the cupcake dresses that were popular in that decade, no doubting it was a 80's dress.

It was here Meghan is quoted to say CBK's was a dress 'goals'.

Same place where she talked more of streamline and structural gowns.

I'll credit a commenter on Go Fug Yourself for suggesting this Pronovias dress. I love this style for Meghan. I really like the neckline and the rounded back. Dress feels romantic, elegant and sexy which aligns w/ the engagement photo vibe. Don't think Meghan will do as much lace and beading as Kate. Though I really liked Kate's dress too.

That one was suggested by a few posters early on here. Was popular among a few of us.

I like the bottom of that but not the top.

I must say I have always like the Pronovias dresses, the structure and design is always sleek and not over-the-top. I like the following dress and think the scale would be good for Meghan - with modifications as to the embroidery and 'fish-tail' skirt - which I think will be very simple:

Stewart Parvin would be a good choice as a traditional British designer who obviously dresses the Queen, but there is something a little "off" about some of his designs for me, particularly when he uses taffeta or a full skirt. Nonetheless, I came across the following photo I couldn't resist posting because of the Japanese-style brocade he used, which might be a good compromise regarding having limited embroidery but without being too plain:

I think I would like the fish tail if it were lighter and not so heavy looking.

I have seen dresses where the embroidery was done is a slightly different shade than the dress and really like that effect.

Consider me old fashioned too then. I just don't think she's going to do a close fitting dress from the waist down.

I think the fish tail would look better if it were in a soft material. But I suppose it would have problems staying 'down' if it were too light weight.

Pronovias is a Spanish company, isn't it?

Yes Spanish company/designer. So not likely to be used...but that style can be seen in other fashion houses.

It's a fine line but I do think the design will be sleek without being form-fitting. That's the nod I think she'll give to CBK's dress...a simpler silhouette without a big train. I do like the embroidery in a different shade but the fish tail doesn't do it for me.

It's hard for me to believe she'd choose Parvin, Bruce Oldfield, or anyone so closely linked with the old guard. She doesn't dress like them for engagements so why would she choose them for her wedding. This might not be the time to take a chance on an unknown designer but I'm hoping she picks a newer less traditional one.

I think going with the old guard would be a smart decision.

She is going to face criticism whatever she does. So to pick someone already linked with the RF would probably deflect that somewhat.

If she is going to face criticism regardless then she should go with the designer who best reflects the style and look she desires and nothing thus far tells me that will be someone from the old guard.

+1000 This collection is fabulous! Meghan has said that her wedding dress goal would be Caroline Besset Kennedy. I haven't really seen a British designer that leans in that direction until now. I really like the Pronovias collection but I think she'll go with a British designer. Suzanne Neville is my new fave.

That one has been posted before and it's one of the "simpler" gowns that I really love. As you said, it's romantic, elegant and sexy and seems to suit Meghan's style.

That Pronovias is very elegant...it just needs a little more detail. It's a little plain otherwise.

LaRae

Yeah. I normally like a little more detail on a wedding dress but that one is beautiful as is. The scooped back and bottom half gives it enough flair I think.

Pronovias is out considering Spanish. But looking at the designs doesn't hurt. Meghan wont be taking a design that a designer already has out there. She will work with them. Pronovias has great examples of the simpler streamline gowns she has spoken of.

I think as long as she chooses a British designer, people aren't going to complain if she chooses a newer designer. Hopefully she chooses a designer who specializes in the style she wants. Yes, they will make a custom gown for her, but if you want a structural gown, you pick a designer who has talent in that area. This is a gown that you need to be the best quality, millions will see.

I honestly hope she doesn't go with Parvin. I cant find any design of his that I find that attractive, modern for Meghan. I highly doubt anyone expects her to wear a designer the 91 year old queen wears. Many good designers to choose from.

Exactly Countessmeout! Are there other British designers who cater to a similar streamlined silhouette?

Pranter I think the embroidery or beading in the most recent links could provide the detail you suggested. Maybe something subtle in the skirt. I wouldn't want to detract from that neckline. I just hope Meghan stays away from a lot of lace since it's so closely associated with Kate.

RS well we know Meghan does like and wear lace now and then but I don't think she's going to go with a full on lace gown.

Beading/pearl and/or embroidery could add some lovely detail to a dress. I'm hoping for very little bling (shiny) ..I think the tiara will cover that part.

Not nesessarily wedding but Stella McCartney is always more to the sleek side.

Very interesting, seeing that fabric. That may be how Meghan can satisfy the (perhaps) 'need' for a 'large' impact versus her tendency to be minimalist: the dress design will be simple but the material used will be where the statement is made.

She's going to be criticised whatever she does so I hope she does exactly what she wants and chooses a designer regardless of nationality, old-guardness or whatever. I just what her to look radiant and exquisite and in a dress that she is 100% on board with. I love her style and do not care about the awful UK media - they will criticise her whatever she does as they have a very obvious agenda!

Not all have an agenda. I would love to see Meghan pick the designer of her dreams as her last great act as an independant single woman who is not British and still won't be when she's married!

Which newspapers don't have an agenda? I think I missed them and would love to see a media outlet that was not biased against Meghan.

To be honest I haven't noticed any real bias against Meghan. The DM et al run hot and cold and sometimes both in the same edition.
Call me naive, but what have they got to be biased about.

I am sure the designer will be British. That is one of the things I could be solid betting on.

I can't imagine it won't be British. That would be quite surprising if not.

LaRae

I expect her to have an elegant up-do.
