This is the best picture I've ever seen of Princess Mikasa's Kokoshnik Tiara and I still can't make out what the design looks like. I wish we had better pictures but that's not going to happen now.

And do you know who the younger lady in that picture is?

I believe it's Princess Mikasa's older daughter, Yasuko, but I'm not positive.

:previous: Yes, that's Yasuko.
[...]

Setsuko, Princess Chichibu, had a quite similar pearl drop tiara, and strangely, Princess Yuriko of Mikasa has also worn this other pearl drop tiara shortly after Princess Chichibu's death. I always wondered why she would do that if she had a similar tiara herself? But I don't know when Princess Hisako started wearing the pearl drop tiara. Is it possible, that Hisako had already been given the Mikasa pearl drop tiara at that time (I think it was in 1997)?

[...]
It's a mystery and Princess Yuriko only appears to have worn Princess Chichibu's secondary tiara once (at least in photos). I'm not certain Princess Hisako was actually given the Mikasa drop tiara. Loan seems more likely as she mostly switches between her wedding and bandeau tiaras. I only recall 2 appearances of Hisako wearing the Mikasa drop tiara: Prince Carl-Philip's wedding and a blurry 2008 new year reception photo

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this comment on , however whilst viewing the "Royal Hat's "blog yesterday, {a wonderful post on the millinery worn during the enthronement ] . I realised that the tiara's worn by the former Takamado princesses Noriko Senge ,and Ayako Mori both appear to be convertible . Noriko Senge's bearing a strong resemblance to her wedding banquet necklace , whilst Ayako Mori was wearing the tiara formerly worn by HIRH Princess Hisako as a necklace . Perhaps Princess Hisako wanted to give her daughters a tangible reminder of their royal lineage that could also be worn in a less "royal" setting . HIRH also realised that they would be present at events such as the Enthronement . After all .upon their marriages they had to return the parure they received on their 20th birthday's . As other former princesses also appeared in tiara's perhaps this is an imperial tradition ?

The Empress looked fantastic, IMO. The large diamonds on the tops of the scrolls on the tiara "rhyme" well with the diamond necklaces.

The pearls that Empress Masako is wearing at the first Daikyo-no-gi banquet are incredible: the size, the lustre, everything is so beautiful. The overall effect of the pearls she is wearing for the second Daikyo-no-gi banquet is exquisite; the lovely long, creamy strands against the peach silk of her dress are really breathtaking. There is no royal family in the world that does pearls better than the Japanese imperial family--hardly surprising.

I wonder... Does she get to keep these tiaras/headpieces? Are they gifts? Or, are the jewels limited to the Myanmar visit? Perhaps loans? Anyway, it's nice to see Princess Yoko wearing different jewelry. :D

Its odd seeing her wear different jewelry. Other then the empress/ crown princess, the other royal women have the set they were given at 20. I have a feeling they may have been loans.

The circlet is beyond odd. It is so tiny and odd right in the center of the top of her head, like it was made for a small child. Not the best look.

I believe it is a costume piece. Prisma aka ImperialJPNFan on Twitter is reporting the “DIANA” crown tiara is made of Swarovski crystals and comes from Zarny’s. It’s very likely that her other head ornaments are from the same designer as well. Link below...

The circlet "Diana Crown" is by Shibuya Zarny, Myanmar-born Japanese designer who created Princess Yoko's dresses for various succession ceremonies this year. I suspect much of her clothes and jewelry for the trip are Zarny. We'll probably never see these pieces again, unless the "tiaras" are modified into bracelets or chokers but the design seems rigid. I'm glad Yoko has an opportunity to wear something different.

Princess Tsuguko is such a rebel ;)

Personally, I can never see enough of the beautiful pearls worn by the Imperial family, and the Empress's jewelry is spectacular for this appearance. I also love the double strand of pearls worn by Princess Nobuko, but really, all of the jewelry is exquisite.

I was asked about Princess Masako of Nashimoto (Yi Bangja, Crown Princess Uimin of Korea) and Princess Sayako's tiaras on twitter. After some google searches, I found some photos of Mikimoto's replica.

- Masako Nashimoto should have received her tiara when she married in 1920 or when she came of age in 1921. Her tiara has a curving (detachable?) piece at the bottom.

- Sayako's tiara is denser and seems heavily inspired by Masako Nashimoto's tiara.

- Mikomoto has a replica created in 1923-1924 and this has been exhibited several times.

November 2005 in Sofia, Bulgaria --> Getty states "belonging to Japanese Imperial Palace" but I think that's a mistake.
2007 in Tokyo
2016 in Osaka

Thank you for the nice photographs, Prisma :)
I remember vaguely the Mikimoto exhibition in Sofia and reading about the Miss World crown in the papers at the time.
Unfortunately the link doesn't work for me, but there are some other photos from 2005 online.

My quest led me an interesting photo of the late Empress Nagako wearing what looks like the sapphire and diamond brooch that is currently with the Princess Hitachi - Link to GettyImages

According to an interview with TV Tokyo, the IHA did not include Princess Aiko's tiara fee in the FY2021 budget "in view of the coronavirus pandemic." Usually the IHA budgets about 30 million yen for a princess' coming-of-age tiara/parure from the public funds it manages. Princess Aiko's tiara will either be paid from the Imperial family’s daily expenses fund or she will use a tiara previously worn by another princess.

I think she'll get a new tiara. Her aunt (ex-Princess Nori) Sayako Kuroda's tiara was also paid from the daily expenses fund. Sayako turned 20 in 1989 but her coming-of-age events were delayed for a year due to Emperor Showa's death and mourning period. The FY1989-1990 IHA budget was already huge for the funeral, tomb, and Emperor Akihito's enthronement. I saw some grumbling on Japan twitter that Princess Mako's tiara/parure was still paid from the IHA public fund despite the 2011 disaster.
