Such sad news..I was shocked to hear of Prince Alexandre's sudden death as I can relate.Just about two years ago my Mom died of complications of pulmonary embolism..My condolences go to the entire Royal family..

What a sad and unexpected thing to happen. My condolences to his family.

My condolences to the royal family.

Sad , no pictures at all of his beloved sister Marie Esmeralda. She was there with her husband and children . Her son in named Leopoldo. Princess Marie-Christine, as thought was not there.

Esmeralda and her children are in the second picuter of PPE.

Princess Lea is such a classy lady!

I wonder if Princess Marie-Christine is still married

The pics were Queen Paola supports Princess Lea are most impressive, two very human and lovely ladies.

Archduke Carl Christian, Archduchess Marie Astrid and Archduchess Yolande of Austria attended too, as well as Princess Margaretha vuz Liechtenstein.
Did Prince Nikolaus vuz Liechtenstein attend the funeral? He often attends the events of the Belgian RF, and his wife was in Laeken this morning, but I don't have seen him in the pictures.

Princess Lea is a striking and elegant woman...very dignified always.

Dear Queen Fabiola, so frail but making a determined effort to be there even in the bad weather.

I wish Prince Laurent would lose some weight, that cannot be healthy for him. His wife is so pretty.

I just don't understand...how does one just drop dead suddenly of a pulmonary embolism?? Does anyone who knows something about this explain it to me please?

the website of VRT features this video and also an article with two clickable video's of the funeral.

Basically it says that the King, Queens, Princes Philippe & Laurent and their wives attended. Princess Léa and her children were seated on the first row. They also say Esmeralda and her family attended, but Marie Christine was nowhere to be found.

It's quite simple: you have a pulmonary embolism when you have something that block the blood flood in the main artery of the lung; the blocking substance can be air, fat, but mostly a blood clot.
The main problem with polmunary embolism is that it happens suddenly: the main symptoms show very suddenly, and are dyspnea, tachypnea, chest pain, hemoptysis, cyanosis, collapse and shock.
It seems that the 15% of all the sudden deaths due to cardiac death are caused by polmunary embolism.

Well, I am glad that Marie Christine managed to attend.

Thanks to all for the pictures. Poor Princess Lea looked so sad.

According to PPE it's either Marie Christine or Marie Esmeralda in this pic:

but I don't think it's either. As far as I remember, Marie Christine has a sharper face, and Esmeralda is not this old.

Plus, you can see Esmeralda in this pic:

and that doesn't seem to be the same lady to me.

Lady Leana
The first picture is that of Margrethe of Liechtenstein, born Princess of Luxenburg.

So Marie Christine wasn't there, and PPE clearly needs to get it's sources straight then :D

Thanks MAfan, that's a very thorough explanation...I guess his history of heart problems could have been a factor. So sad.

I could not find her in any of the pictures. She did not attend her parents' funerals and she has been estranged for so long it would have been strange if she did show up.:flowers:

It is really lovely to see Queen Paola lending support to Princess Lea. I hope that his family is able to find comfort and peace.

You're welcome, CaliforniaDreamin!
I'm not sure about it, but it's possible that the cardiac malformation, or better its consequences, since the malformation was solved in 1957, have somehow influenced the rise of the embolism.
But I'm not sure, I'm not a medician...

im very touched by the pictures of princess Lea , she looked sad :(
its great , all the family was theire for supporting the princess ; but the late prince didn't have any children ??

Just after Princess Mathilde on the left Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein (brown hair) and on the right her sister Archiduchess Marie Astrid (blond hair).
On one of the flowers was written DAPHNE , it is Princess Marie-Christine second surname.
I was glad to see outside the church next to Princess Lea , Princess Marie Esmeralda with her two children ( Princess Lilian's only grandchildren)

No, Prince Alexandre did not have any children of his own. But Princess Léa has two children from her previous marriages. Her daughter read a beautiful poem about love in the church. Apparently it was his favourite. It was in Dutch.
