My post is about coronations not funerals.

but they are both royal events which will be inviting the same kind of people, a selection of peers, other royals, and people of importance in the UK and commonwealth. So if the queen's funeral was not all old white men, which it certainly wasnt, I dont see why the invitees to the coronation will be radically different.

As I said, I'm talking about coronations not funerals. I'm comparing the upcoming coronation with previous coronations, which have predominantly involved old white men. I'm saying it would be good to see more diversity, reflection our populations. I don't know how else I can phrase it so that you understand I'm only talking about coronations.

well of course it is going to be different in many respects from the last coronation which was 70 years ago. It will be a simpler service, there will be less people and of course since Britain and the commonwealth are different now, the people who are invited will be different. Probably in 20 odd years if Will becomes king, the coronation will be different again, perhaps Scotland and N Ireland will be gone out of the Union, etc

I think it's a great idea to include older children in the ceremony. They're citizens too and I'd love to see the coronation involving the full range of the realms' populations rather than predominantly old white men (again).

The only source I've seen for this is The Sun, hardly the most reliable of newspapers. Four Garter Knights / Ladies from each of the nations of the UK would be my preference. School children carrying the flags of Commonwealth countries would be a nice touch and probably enough.

It's because it's a sacred moment. The most sacred of all. There's nothing wrong with kids per se but when the alternative is four knights of the garter then I definitely think it's a comedown.

It has the feel of someone trying too hard to be modern & inclusive.
The Garter, England´s most noble order, as we know, needs an office and a representation at this coronation, and not by just some Knights sitting somewhere in the congregation!
Charles being known as a traditionalist I must admit I had higher hopes and expectations. The four Knights (and the four peeresses at the Queen´s coronation after the King has been crowned) moving solemnly towards the coronation theatre, holding a golden canopy while the choir sang "Zadok the priest" was one of the most dignified, uplifting moments of the ceremony! Youngsters holding a "screen" (heaven knows how this would look like...) instead of it, occurs very odd to me.

I'm pretty sure they have some fabulously embroidered, carved or painted screens in the vault, that can be used. I'm very much looking forward to what will come to light that hasn't been seen for eons.

I´m not. I was looking forward so much to a future british coronation since my childhood because I naively thought it would be done pretty much the way we knew it... Having it shortened that much, attended by such a little number of guests (actually perhaps on the scale of a Commonwealth Day service or so) and disfigured by, obviously lots of ridiculous changes, I don´t know if "coronation fever" will ever grip me...
What is, from my point of view, even worse, is the lack of enthusiasm and excitement in Britain by the people we witness so far! The nation is not joint in this at all; the constant scandals in this family do their bit, celebrities handing back their OBEs and Commonwealth countries voicing their intentions to split from the crown.
I was never a pessimist about this monarchy because, despite all of its problems since 30 years, it always managed to overcome it. But attacks on the institution (even more dangerous when it comes from within!) become harder and more frequent and sometimes I wonder if this will be the last coronation we will see at all...!

If diversity is a concern then there are female knights of the garter (unlike in 53) & one of them is a woman of colour. And talking of peer's wives the Marchioness of Bath would look splendid as one of The Queen's ladies.

And can we please stop referring to "old white men". People are people & shouldn't be dismissed because of characteristics they can't control. I couldn't care less if everyone who participated were old white men or middle aged south Asian females.

There's nothing wrong with old white men so it's not an insult and I'm not dismissing them at all. I just don't want a repeat of 1953 where they were the people predominantly involved in the ceremony. I don't want to see any particular group of people dominating the important roles, I just want the coronation to better reflect the societies we all live in, which is why I'm pleased to hear there might be some older children involved.

It's always like this in Britain before a major event, whether it's a jubilee or the olympics. There doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm beforehand, there are predictions it will fall flat and be an expensive mistake. Then, every single time, just before the event the population goes a bit bananas and throws themselves into it. I expect the coronation will be the same.

Public school educated members of the upper class dominated the coronation in 53. That was their most important commonality. The vast majority of old British white men didn't get any closer than being in the crowds lining the route.

Young people would be best as pages or maybe in cadet uniforms.

what does it matter? The coronation will take place, Charles will probalby last out as King, and if William is not king, the world wont end.

On a personal note about the Coronation, I follow a British lady on Twitter who has been posting some Coronation-themed items she's found on Etsy in preparation for her neighborhood's Big Lunch and I'm so jealous. Not one person I know here in the midwest would be interested in holding a big lunch or celebrating the Coronation with me. In fact, many would recognize Charles and possibly Camilla, William, and Catherine but beyond that have zero interest in royal watching. Anywho, back to the thread. I just needed a moment to vent to people who would understand my disappointment as I sip my tea and watch the whole thing unfold all by myself.

Hey Heather - my village is holding some Coronation events (we're small so it's all very amateur and rural). Feel free to message me and you could join in via WhatsApp. I'm also game to join you in a celebratory cuppa. :flowers:

There might be some British or other interested Commonwealth expats in your part of the world?

Aw, thank you. I just might have to!

I too am in a neighboring state and would love to have a little get together but no one near me wants to have one. A friend and I are having a little thing over face time since she lives on the East Coast

Actually your comments are an insult. You imply that current British government intend to sideline people of colour during coronation. It's really unacceptable.

I don't imply that at all! I said I'm pleased to see that children might be involved and I hope to see more diversity, reflecting the societies we live in, unlike in 1953. I'm not insulting anyone.

In 1953 a lot of British families still mourned young people killed by nazies during World War II. In 1953 British population consisted predominantly by white natives.
But you imply that 1953 coronation didn't reflect the societies they lived in.

And now you express "concerns" (in fact insult) about current Britons.

No, the main people involved in the actual ceremony didn't reflect the societies they lived in. In 1953, women were at least half of the population but few held high office in any sphere and they weren't permitted to be vicars, let alone bishops.

We're in a very different world now so the 2023 coronation could include women, young people and also reflect the diverse heritage of the population. If you think saying that is insulting anyone, then you're misunderstanding me.

The 2023 coronation WILL include women, young people and also reflect the diverse heritage of the population.

There is no need to doubt it!

I'm very curious about the regalia and clothing that will be worn. As The King, it would appear will be crowned in his Admiral's uniform, and I would expect that those Peers present will wear their parliamentary robes, what of the Princes and Princesses. Can we expect them to be robed and wearing coronets?

I am knitting crowns as we speak to wear while watching the ceremony unfold on tv, I am sure I will manage a glass of fizz to help the day along. I am having a coronation house party which weather permitting will go out in to the garden as the day unfolds. Buy a plane ticket and join us.

It looks like an Admiral's uniform is not the best choice. This uniform is heavy. Plus crown, plus long train, plus robes. Charles is healthy, but an old man.

I hope to see coronets.

Here is an interesting Video about the Issue

Yes exactly. I cant understand why anyoe thinks that the coronation of Charles wont be very differnet to that of Elizabeth 70 years ago.

There are people who want it to be very much like the previous one for reasons of tradition and they're worried something will be lost by modernising it. I expect that Charles has had to straddle the desire to make it contemporary while preserving the historically and religiously significant aspects. Of course this coronation will be different and in this thread, we're all discussing which bits we'd like changed and which bits we'd like to keep.
