No wonder Ella Windsor said she had wonderful memories of Christmases at the castle as a child, it looks totally magical. I've always wished that the royal Christmas had stayed at Windsor, Sandringham looks so drab in comparison.

i assume this will just be for the duration of the queen not being in residence. i wonder if they decided to open the gardens to give the public more space for walking and outdoor recreation after lockdown.

The article says in past they have been worries of too many people in garden at once. But its also worth remembering the gardens are on the same side as HMs bedroom and other private apartments so likely its for privacy and security and logistics (HM sometimes is in the castle when the public can visit but being right outside her window is another level)

It makes super sense to so it now as a way to maximise visiting opportunities and provide outdoor places for those still worried about being inside. The Royal Collection is facing millions in losses due to not being able to open over summer as planned so makes sense to give every opportunity a chance now. Question is, will they do the same next year when HM goes away on her break (if things are back to normalish)

Yes that makes perfect sense. Her apartments would be to the left as you looked at the east front of the castle from the garden. I'd love to see the East Terrace Gardens in person. In some programme (maybe the BBC series about the castle?) Prince Philip describes how he redesigned the gardens.

There is an orangery to the side of the gardens. In these images it is on the right hand side as a long row of windows. You would walk on top of it. It is now used as a swimming pool I understand.

A former US first lady (I can't remember which sorry, but want to say Nancy Regan) said in her autobiography that she and the President were invited to breakfast on a private terrace off HM's bedroom. That would overlook this garden, another reason why it may not always be opened to the public.

The garden was open to the public in 2014 when I was there.

I think it must mean people can now walk within this garden itself, rather than around it, around the edge of it.

A very quiet area of the castle without the crowds that other areas had.

Amazing sense of openess from this area - views out across the land behind and around the castle.

A lot of anecdotes from those working there. The rooms of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - when they stay at Windsor - were pointed out too.

Wonderful place, really wonderful.

The garden was open to the public in 2014 when I was there.

When i visited it in 2006 the Terrace around it was also open an one could look down into the Garden. But this years it seems one can go down and walk through the GTArden itself. Lets hope they will allow that also in the futre for exampole in the Summer months when HM is not in residence.

If you would like to travel Osipi, I hope you get to do so.

I’ve seen castles and palaces in Brazil, China, Russia, Scandinavia, Turkey, France, Germany, all over the British Isles. And most of those in only the last six years.

And despite some health issues - bad bones, and only ever earning a low income during my working life.

And not being an adventurous type of person, more a homebody.

If you ever get the chance to see some of these wonderful places, take it.

Where are the Cambridge's rooms btw?

You may have seen the three or four phone photos of a few years ago Durham, where the Cambridge family were unloading their car on Easter Sunday.

Those also show a bit of the area.

I’ve blown up the one photo I took and will re-post it here.

The guides are everywhere about the castle and very chatty.

We we’re in the corner, diagonally across from the area that the Cambridge’s use.

I only took one photo, and remember thinking I should have zoomed in more and taken a few extra, but I think there was just so much to see and photograph I only took the one shot.

The Queen’s apartments are on the end, facing out in the other direction.

I expect the Cambridge’s actually face out over the landscape, not back into this area.

Another guide said Her Majesty lived on the top area, which I guess gives her a better view.

And she probably has a lift to get up there and down, though I once went to the Queen Mother’s castle of Mey.

There is an old, small lift there - but was told that even in very old age, the Queen Mother always took the stairs up to her bedroom.

Old, narrow stone spiraling stairs, that I didn’t feel overly safe mounting, so very impressed with the QM tackling those each night.

There doesn't seem to be any information about this CyrilVladisla, except that Prince Philip re-designed the whole area and commissioned the bronze lotus fountain in 1971.

There are many nice photos of this area on the internet I've now discovered.

A really nice one of the Queen and her sister as children sitting on the lawn, and info about how it was used for growing food during the war years.
