Ok, so yes, us ladies in the South have been known to wear a dress to a university football game/tailgate. But nothing like the dress that Meghan was wearing. Most dresses along these lines. Personally I'd stay away from the stiletto heals at a tailgate. Flats and boots with thicker heals (in the cooler months) are a much safer bet.

I’m an alum of UGA. You see all types at tailgate. The fancy dressed ones are usually members of a sorority or dates of a frat boy. Meghan’s dress was nice, comfortable and appropriate for Ascot.

The Duchess of Gloucester wore a lovely shirt dress to Ascot yesterday.

Yes, she did! And Sophie's outfit for Ladies' Day, while not an actual shirt dress, was not dissimilar to one. There's no pleasing some folks looking on from the forums, but it seems as though Meghan did get a good feel for how the people who are actually in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot dress.

I have never heard of a Tailgate party before. Could someone please explain it for me.

Just because some don't like this dress doesn't mean we can't be pleased; why does this copout automatically have to be used to dismiss differing opinions? I have liked some of Meghan's clothes and have disliked others. I still say the hat was brilliant. Yet the dress itself is too plain for the event imo and the shoes are ugly.
I've been to one tailgate party, and I loved it, and there were some girls dressed up more than Meghan but the outfits wouldn't be appropriate for a Royal Event; skirts too short, shirts real tight etc. They looked great but nowhere near royal.

I can't say I have seen anyone 'dressed to the nines' in the barbecue parties I have attended - but then I live in the UK where layers are steadily added as the night progresses. I think Meghan looked immaculately turned out with stylish accessories accompanying the clean lines of the shirt dress. How lucky we are to have this elegant woman join our royal family.

I love the hat, but not a fan of the dress.

I guess I’m just not into lace or uneven hems. None of the three Duchesses’ looks at Ascot were my favorites. However, we have many years of races in the future, so I’m hoping things will become more adventurous. Other royal ladies manage it.
And I’m seriously over Eliza Doolittle at Ascot shtick, it's becoming such a cliché.

I agree about the Eliza Doolittle references as well, they're becoming almost as boring as the new duchess's fashion sense.

A lot of people love Eliza Doolittle references. I’ve just been following Ascot fashions for years and there’s always a lot of it. And I’m not a fan of themed dressing in general, seems to lack creativity to me.

Absolutely agree, the pony blanket in Edinburgh was a great example of theme dressing gone horribly wrong LOL :flowers:

Boring and themes  Oh mercy she is taking advice from her sister in law. I hope we don't see the sailor button coats for sea events soon. :ermm:

Wearing tartan in Scotland isn't really a 'theme'. If that is the closest she gets to a theme I will be happy.

I love having a royal to watch that isn't 'what color coat dress' will she wear? Or if lucky, what color lace will she wear? Or both. :whistling: Lady Gabriella we don't see enough of. A young modern 30 something year old woman who dresses like one. Very refreshing.

Great thing about fashion. Those excited by Eliza Doolittle, and shopping in Aunty/Mom's closet have one thread. Those of us who like more modern, sleek looks, have another. :flowers:

Hey, Eliza Doolittle was at Ascot when she wore that remarkable lace dress? WOW! You learn something new everyday; I adore that dress although I've never seen the movie. (..)

No, we don't have to worry about what color coat Meghan wears, because she refuses to wear color of any kind. Oatmeal to taupe, with some black and gray seems to be her color palate, booooooooring! She's absolutely no fun to watch because she only makes a statement with accessories and doesn't seem to know how to dress her body type. All JMO

And what of her dark green dress for her engagement interview? Meghan has also worn a patterned green dress to a memorial service, a tartan coat in Edinburgh, a midnight blue dress for the Queen's birthday concert and a dark blue coat in Brixton.

.

Please refrain from discussing other royal ladies or celebrities as well as from drawing comparisons. A number of comments had to be removed. The topic of Tailgate parties has now been discussed sufficiently. Please get back on topic of this thread!

Having looked at the galleries online and many clips on YouTube I think I have decided that I absolutely adore the entire ensemble.

The hat was, of course, absolutely gorgeous but it is an absolute given that not everyone can wear it, let alone rock it, in all its asymmetrical glory as she did.

As to the wonderful lined shirtdress, well she wore that with such grace and elegance that I loved it from the moment I saw her in the carriage, and after I saw the skirt I was blown away by such successful simplicity and how it fits with her minimalist leanings. It was sensible to wear the lower 80mm heels rather than the 100mm but I wonder why she always wears her shoes too big?

All in all, from head to toe she looked a picture of elegance without looking like she was "wearing a costume" like Eliza Dolittle in a movie or imitating the late Princess Margaret or perhaps wanting to just make a big statement.

Hear she is wearing Prada...looks a pale pink? Waiting to see a better view but first glance I like it.

Some places are reporting it's a two piece outfit. Looks like a one piece to me?

I couldn't really tell as I only saw Meghan sitting down but I thought it looked like a dress. I think there is another photo on the British Royal Events thread. Nothing up close yet:)

*sigh* She certainly looks nice and very appropriate. However, it's just....boring. Again, very appropriate and a nice outfit but nothing even remotely spectacular or wow about it. I just keep crossing my fingers for even a tiny pop of color in the form of a fun bag or fabulous shoes or a gorgeous hat but so far nada.

Just saw a better view...I really like the style from what I am seeing.

LaRae

It looks pale pink, 2 piece..and I really like her shoe!

It looks as if it might be a two piece, and a very pretty one, I think. Is it pale pink?

I like what I see so far!!

But I think it is a mistake that it is yet another non British or CW brand...

I really like the color and style (except the hemline I do not usually care for the high/low thing)...She looks great though! It all suits her.

Hmm. I'm not a fan of the double row of prominent round buttons combined with the belt. I'm also not liking the high-low hemline, but that's almost always true for me. She wears the pale colors well, and this outfit is fine, but nothing especially flattering or interesting.

Meh.
