The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, 6 May 2023

The Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra are also on the balcony!

Was Louis wearing the same uniform as the queen two younger page boys?

To me the crowds seemed to be down, even sparse at some points along the route due to the heavy rain. I doubt the crowds are as large in the Mall or anywhere else as they were in 1953 when there was a very different feeling towards a new and young monarch. The weather was bad on that day too, but photos show streets that were jam packed along a longer route than today’s.

That was different - I didn't expect to see all the pages on the balcony!

Watching the balcony appearance, I feel it’s unfair to exclude Beatrice and Eugenie of Lady Louise and her brother are there.

Everyone's got a TV now, and the events have been shown live on big screens across the country.

Balcony appearance now.

And the rain is really heavy for the flypast.

I think I spied the lesser spotted Duchess of Kent on the balcony behind Princess Alexandra.

But until today it was out of the question to wear the grand collar of an Order (Garter, Golden Fleece, Elephant, etx.) on jacquet (morning suit).

I think they were worn that way at the Golden Jubilee service in 2002 as well. I remember the Lord Chamberlain and Lord Steward walking in front of the Queen carrying their wands, in morning suits with their collars on top.

Great flypast with helicopters and red arrows

King Charles has been crying. What an emotional day, I really couldn't be happier for him and the love of his life.

Very sad that Prince Michael didn't appear on the balcony. That was probably the last time we see The Gloucesters and 2/3 of the Kents on the Balcony. Yes, I'm teary eyed again.

Another Balcony appearance from the King and Queen with cheers from the crowd

These were chains of office, not the Collar of the Garter. For an example at the Jubilee Trooping the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge wore their collars with military tenue. The Duke of York only the breast star pinned on jacquet, as always has been the dresscode - until today, so to see (Sir John and Sir Tony).

So I guess the coronation of King Charles III is history now.

A bit more low-key than I would have imagined a few months ago, but interesting nonetheless.

Honestly I am not a fan of screen actors, pop singers and TV personalities replacing peers and peeresses, but I understand they were people who had been inducted into the order of the British Empire or held similar decorations.

I thought royal boys had to wear shorts until 8, so why is Louis in pants?

They don’t have to in these modern times. And when it is cold. Louis and young George have worn pants sometimes. Plus Louis is in a mini uniform.

Like Charles and Camilla tour in Australia maybe people were just crossing the streets on their lunchbreak today, as you once said lol ?

Joke aside i do think everything just turned out great, crowds included.

Those offices don't have chains of office, as far as I know. You can see the Garter badge on the Duke of Abercorn in the background here. The Duke of Gloucester wore his GCVO collar similarly in 1977.

Wonderful ceremony. The rain didn't spoil it. Wonderful crowds.

Massive crowds and even bigger numbers of people watching via the various media around the world, I'd say it was a great success. Well done to everyone involved!

George, Charlotte and Louis behaved beautifully. For a Two hour ceremony. Wow.

I surely would not have lasted that long if I was there at that age.

I agree. I actually think that all members is his family should have been on the balcony — working royals or not. At the heart of it —
It was just as much a family affair as a state occasion.

They're once again in the balcony, this time with the pages. Boy, is it raining now...

Kate’s headwear was lovely (and not a floral mess as feared). It goes with the robes, same for the headwear of the other ladies in robes. It reminds me of what QEII’s ladies-in-waiting wore in 1953.

It reminds me of those crown headpieces that women wore in Ancient Rome.

The streets in Westminster, where I am, going towards the palace and the abbey were closed off already before 10 and I heard a soldier tell someone who asked why that it was because some areas along the route were to overcrowded.

The Canadian commemorative event has begun. The new royal standard will apparently be unveiled, among other things.

All in all, it was a beautiful ceremony and I do understand a bit better why queen Elizabeth never considered abdication after a holy and ancient ceremony like this. And it seemed Charles truly felt the importance of this moment and is committed to his role of being a servant king.

I also liked that William not only pledged allegiance but that it was William as well that put on his father's kingly robe that he wore during the coronation itself - and them participating in both processions stressed his role as heir. And George now knows very well what awaits him one day. He also seemed very attentive throughout the service.

Were the rings ones truly worn or were they previously used as seal rings?

I noticed the very cute interaction between George and the other pages on the balcony. Obviously relieved-and proud- of having successfully completed their duties, they were conversing and laughing in a rather gown-up, teenageish way. Suddenly George doesn’t seem like such a little boy anymore.

Let’s be honest. In 1953 people weren’t that considered about ahem ‘Health and safety’ to consider the amount of people in a location.

Shutting off entrances in London is now common even on an average weekday during rush hour…or it was before covid.

The balcony appearance was IMO exactly as it should be. The entire day was perfect. William and Catherine look more than ready to be King and Queen already!
The entire Wales family looked so regal.

Charles is now truly HM The King, congratulations!
