Countess Marianne Bernadotte celebrates her 90th birthday next Tuesday, 15th July. She gave an interview to Svensk Damtidning and tells that her calendar is full of work and work. Marianne was a wellknown actress at the Royal Dramatic Theatre when she married Sigvard Bernadotte. Marianne says that of course her work at the theatre was the reason that her first marriage ended to a divorce, she worked every evening and all weekends. In her marriage with Sigvard, Marianne wanted to use her position to do some good. She is now honorary doctor both at the Karolinska Institutet and the University of Bologna. She is the woman behind Permobilen and she has supported for decades the research of dyslexia and children's eye care. And she is active in culture.
She met Sigvard for the first time already on 1945. She says that she was very young and Sigvard was 37 years old, she thought then that Sigvard was old. And then they met again 12 years later, and something happened. It was magical, says Marianne. She was going through a divorce and Sigvard was divorcing from his second wife. Although Marianne was his third wife, she never hesitated or thought that their marriage wouldn't last. Sigvard said that she was special, the only one of his women that reminded his mother. They had 41 years together. They wanted to live for eachother and didn't want any more children. Marianne had three children from her first marriage, but one of them died when he was only one year old. Sigvard had his son Michael from his second marriage. Marianne tells that Sigvard loved her cooking. Her father-in-law was her favourite royal relative.
Marianne celebrates her birthday at her daughter Marielle's home. Two years ago Marianne's son Robert died in cancer. Marianne says that she misses him but she has her daughter and her grandchildren. Marianne is one of Swedish Radio's Summer Hosts and her program will be sent on her birthday. She talks in it about the future, and laughs that it feels a little weird - she, a 90 year old woman, talks about the future.

Countess Bettina Bernadotte gave an interview to Südkurier. She spoke about investments, the importance of tourism and queen Silvia's visit to the island of Mainau on 23rd August.
You will have the end of August a very special guest here on the island: Queen Silvia of Sweden. How does it feel?
When the Queen is a guest, we have great anticipation, to show her what we do here on the Mainau - because I also know that she enjoys it. When you have such special guests, one wishes that everything goes like one hopes it will.
How do you talk to the Queen?
Because of the fact that we are related, I say "Silvia".
Do you have also private moments with each other, you can break out of the protocol?
Yeah, sure. During the visit, there is certainly also private moments.
Will you make a return visit?
Again and again we are in Sweden, it's also the country whose citizen I am. You really have to do like in any family. Everyone has their agenda, and if that fits, you can meet also.

Countess Gunnila Bernadotte, 91, has given an interview to Svensk Damtidning's last week's issue. Gunnila has moved from Villa Kungsberga, where she lived with her late husband count Carl Johan, to a new home in central Båstad. She says that living in Villa Kungsberga wasn't an alternative anymore since she doesn't drive a car. It would have been troublesome and lonesome. Now her friends can visit her and she them, and all is near: bank, shops, hairdresser.
Gunnila tells about life together with Carl Johan: they didn't like to be away from eachother. Carl Johan loved to be at home. They didn't have a boring moment, Carl Johan was so funny, spiritual and inquisitive, he loved a good conversation and was a great listener. He was involved in many things, like Chamber music in Båstad, tennis and many festivals, he read a lot, watched TV and knew always what was happening in the world. Everything was so easy for them, they didn't have any difficulties to adapt to each other although they met when they were quite old. Carl Johan was the most fascinating person she knew. They were old friends and had socialized as families during the years. Then their spouses died. Carl Johan used to come to the silver shop Gunnila worked and have a little chat. Gunnila remembers a lunch where she was invited. Carl Johan had called to the hostess and asked if Gunnila had promised to attend, and when he heard that she would come, Carl Johan accepted the invitation too. They were married on 29th September 1988 in Swedish Church in Copenhagen. After the wedding queen Ingrid hosted a family dinner in Fredensborg.
Gunnila tells that they travelled a lot together, especially to USA, where Gunnila's daughter Madeleine and granddaughter Anna live. Gunnila's other granddaughter Hedda lives in Luxembourg. Gunnila has also son Fred. Carl Johan's children Monica and Christian are also having a close contact to Gunnila. Carl Johan was called Johnnie or uncle Putte. Gunnila was asked if it was different to fall in love when being old, she was 65 years old when she married Carl Johan. Gunnila shakes her head and says: Love is always the same. Gunnila is happy that she has been able to attend the christenings of Estelle and Leonore and other royal events, she is over 90 years old!

Thanks for the translation. I am happy that Carl Johann still could see Princess Victoria marrying. His second marriage to Gunilla, daughter of Count and Countess Wachtmeister af Johannishus née Baroness De Geer, would have been a "great match" these days.

Sandra can now call Crown Princess Victoria as second cousin. They liked each other right away, Victoria came to the big wedding celebration in Mainau. "Victoria is totally deeply relaxed, warm, cheerful and down to earth," says Countess Sandra. "A really dear relative!"

Is the Countess close to the RF ??

Yes, she is always invited to the family celebrations, and big events like Victoria's and Madeleine's weddings and and Estelle's and Leonore's christenings. The members of the royal family attend at the Bernadotte Art Awards and from the photos one can see that she is close to the family. Countess Marianne speaks always so nicely about the royal family at her interviews.
