I have the impression that Princess Leonor was wearing the wider version of sash of the Collar of the Order of Carlos III rather than the narrower sash that is normally worn by ladies. It looks too big on her, even occluding her Golden Fleece.

I understand that the Princess was in naval uniform, but that doesn't mean she has to dress exactly like a boy.

Actually, the wider sash is technically gender-neutral, and is to be worn specifically with the uniform epaulettes on Leonor's uniform. The narrow version is for gowns worn by women, and would be pinned onto the gown- which Leonor could not do with her military uniform. I think it's plausible that Leonor will choose the narrow sash when she is dressed in a ball gown.

Military uniform configurations are rarely about how a particular service member wants to accessorize, and are steeped in protocol and traditions.
