Luckily she had the option of wearing a mantilla to cover her mostly shaven head... and look somewhat lady-like.
 
Did the friendship between her and the King begin before or after she became Prince Albert's partner and later wife?
 
So she CAN travel abroad for a royal event...when it suits her.

Yes she can travel but the other kings or queens or princesses cannot travel !!!, it is a shame that no kings, queens or princes and princesses did not attend the funeral of the king
The king Goodwell Zwellithini was a worthy king like them!!!
Princess Charlene was also there she was present for the principauty of Monaco

Well many countries have banned or extremely strongly discouraged any non essential travel and a funeral is often included in that.

Their countries might also require quarantining when they come back which would interfere with their lives and work.

And unlike Charlene most do not have a South African passport and that can make a difference when travelling.

I'm sure many other would have been there if they could.

I do think it's understandable but very noticeable that she can get to SA for a funeral but not to some that were much closer to home and not in the middle of a pandemic.

The isiZulu King was honoured with an official burial. Her attendance, representing a foreign country/ monarchy is completely acceptable.

It is acceptable but once again South Africa or Africa in general has to be involved. It's a pity she can't bring herself to attend royal events in other places.

I can't see any sign of any overseas dignitaries at the memorial service (the funeral was yesterday) so I think they weren't invited. Everyone there seems to be South African.

Perhaps Charlene was there because she was South African and had a personal connection with the King.
 
I think Princess Charlene was the only foreign royal/dignitary there ,maybe she's been in South Africa for awhile?
 
^^^previous. My guess too...that she was already in SA. Currently a maximum of 100 people are allowed at gatherings and therefore foreign guests were not invited.

P Charlene may have enjoyed a close relationship with the late king as she spent some time in KwaZulu-Natal in earlier years.

Yes, she seems to have been there in a personal capacity instead of officially representing Monaco.

I think she is spending time with her brother Sean - he and his family are in KZN at the moment.

I am also intrigue in African kingdoms, so I bought and read a glossy photobook with every African history of different countries including South Africa, NIgeria, Ivory Coast, Congo, Cameroon etc. etc. including the History of the origins of the African Kingdoms by Pierre Alexandre. The title of the glossy coffee table photo book is "African Kings" by Daniel Laine.
