Here is The Duchess of Windsor's engagement ring, a 19 carat emerald set in yellow gold. Not my favorite, but I can appreciate the stone even if the setting is a bit much:

I quite like the ring. I agree that the setting is a bit too much.
I own a very similar ring, the stone is a green tourmaline instead of an emerald. The setting however is only gold and that looks much better IMO.:flowers:

This is not the original setting. It was reset in c. 1950 (according to the Christie's auction catalogue.)

Something for everyone...

...for it's simplicity and the idea behind it.

Isn't it wonderful that the world of jewelry can accommodate all of us! I like ALL the rings, because of the sentiment. It is only recent that women had any hand at all in their engagement rings. Whatever was presented was accepted. In 1929, my grandfather presented my grandma with a pearl brooch as an engagement gift. It's only recently that we've become so fussy.

I think Letizia's ring is lovely. I also like the Egyptian way of no engagement ring at all. The plain band is worn on the left during engagement and moved to the right at the wedding. Muslim men may not wear gold, so their rings are either silver or platinum.

In Ireland the Claddagh is widely used as an engagement and wedding ring, depending on how it's worn. The left hand is the wedding finger in Ireland.

Sarah Chatto's ring is a very middle-class English cluster. My sisters in law have rings like that.

I'd like to think that all of these royal ladies, like me, would have privately accepted a piece of string if the man I loved was proposing!

Just a little correction.:flowers: While the claddagh ring is one that most here will own at some time or another, it most definitely is not widely used as an engagement or wedding ring. The most widely used ring here for an engagement would be the traditional diamond ring, and then a band for a wedding ring.

Has there ever been a photo of Princess Anne's 2nd engagement ring, the one from Tim Lawrence?

Original Setting

Are there any pictures of the original setting then? :flowers:

All I could find was a textual description that it was a platinum setting. It might have been ornate, or plain.

The Duke and Duchess were reputed to have played around with her jewelry when they needed money.

A good recap of 10 royal engagement rings from Hello! magazine
Crown jewels: The fabulous rings which sealed the love of Europe's royal couples

My favorite is Maxima's. Modern yet has a vintage feel to it. Gotta love the expensive colored diamond. And of course, an orange diamond for the Princess of Orange.

I couldn't agree more, EmpressRouge. Maxima's ring reminds me of certain characteristics of her wedding attire: classic and utterly appropriate without being trite or boring. Like you, I appreciated the symbolism of the orange stone (stunning, by the way); also, orange is a color that suits her very well.

Maxima's choices are always timelessly elegant and yet have a discreet modern "twist." Perfect.

Can anyone supply photos or give very good descriptions of the engagement rings of the following royal ladiesl?

Well done Dierna. I love it as well. love to see yours posted as well!

the queen mumring is on camillafinger

Ok - so I like Princess Grace ring - although quite large, the simple and classic setting is breathtaking.
The Duchess of Windsor had a simple huge Emerald with a platinum setting - very Art Deco - the ugly yellow gold setting was made lateron - not to the best.
I have never liked Dianas or Sarahs rings - too bourgeois - accordin to my opinion.
Queen Margarethe - i know it is REALLY HUGE - but i like it. This ring is defnitely unique...

Neva too big! I love this setting, so elegant!!!!

WOW that's huge!!! and beautiful!!!
I wouldn't mind to have one of that on my finger...

Does Charlene W's engagement ring contain a large stone surrounded by smaller stones, or maybe pave set stones? I hope we will get a better picture of it soon.

Think i need to see a proper front picture of Charlene's ring before i pass judgement on it but goodness it is huge

It looks huge. Actually, it doesn't seem an engagement ring. Generally, from what i see, engament rings are elegant, petit, and sober. This one is way too big for an engagement ring. But...what do i know about the subject?
