28 Foreign Monarchs Invited To Thai King's Diamond Jubilee

By D. Arul Rajoo

BANGKOK, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- The monarchs of 28 countries, including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, have been invited to attend the 60th anniversary celebrations of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's accession to the throne in June this year.

The other countries include Bahrain, Brunei, Bhutan, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Holland, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Swaziland, Tonga, the United Arab Emirates and Britain.

Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai said the foreign monarchs would join the major events in Bangkok marking the Diamond Jubilee on June 12 and 13.

"Letters of invitation were signed by the Prime Minister and sent to heads of the governments of those countries in December 2005, asking them to convey the invitation to their head of state," Surakiart said.

Born in 1927 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States, King Bhumibol is the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history, as well as in the world. He was crowned on May 5, 1950, four years after he actually assumed his kingship.

Surakiart said among events lined up to mark the historical event are paying of tribute to the King at Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, exhibition featuring his activities and projects during his reign at the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall and a royal barge procession on the Chao Phraya River.

On June 13, the King will host a banquet for the foreign monarchs at the Chakri Throne Hall within the Grand Palace where a representative of the foreign monarchs will give a speech expressing best wishes to King Bhumibol.

"The celebrations of his Diamond Jubilee are extraordinary and rare. Many countries are also excited about the celebrations," said Surakiart.

He said the event would be televised all over the world, adding that he believed the world would be interested in the major gathering of the 29 monarchs, which would be a rare occasion.

The Thai government has embarked on many events throughout the year to celebrate the anniversary.

In June, 9.9 million commemorative bank notes, worth 60 baht each, will be printed while three sets of commemorative stamps will be issued on May 5, June 9 and Dec 5, with each set comprising one million stamps.

Thai Princess Ubolratana released Tuesday (Jan 24) a quarterly magazine To Be Number One in a bid to strengthen her anti-drug campaign among teenagers under the same name.

She said the publication would be a major communication tool among members. “Every (To Be Number One) member owns the magazine,” said the princess

A brainchild project of Princess Ubolratana, the To Be Number One project was started in July, 2002. So far, it has some 29 million members around the country. The princess has been heavily involved with the project and the launch of the magazine is her latest contribution.

“His Majesty The King is so pleased with the To Be Number One project. He once told me that if possible, he’d love to visit the project in all the provinces,” said the princess.

“I haven’t written anything in the debut issue but I’ll have my own column in the future. It will be called “Talk to the Princess”, which allows members to write to me and ask any questions,” said the princess.

Hi, does anyone have information and pictures of HRH the Royal Princess, Somdetceh Phra Debaratanarajasuda Chao Fa Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand

Princess Robijn said:
Is she the crownprincess??

nope.. :)

she is the youngest daughter to the King. :)
however, comparing to her other siblings (even to the crown prince), she is the most dedicated and hard-working. that is why Thai people adore her very much. she initiates a lot of royal projects that benefit the people.
and personally, i would like to see her as heir to the throne rather than her brother. ;)

are her brother(s) & sister(s) married??

is the king allowed to choose the one who will be king/queen after him??

unfortunately not.

right now, the King's only son is the crown prince.

I have another question, according to wikipedia, the king & queen have 4 children, 1 styled crownprince, 1 styled crownprincess & 2 styled princess.. but isn't the crownprince married, and wouldn't this make his wife crownprincess...

Wikipedia:
The King and his wife Queen Sirikit have four children:

How many wives does the crown prince have? 3???

now he only has 1, Princess Srirasmi. :)

here's his family bio from wikipedia :
On January 3, 1977 Vajiralongkorn married Princess Soamsavali Kitiyakara (born 1957), a close cousin on his mother's side. The marriage ended in divorce in the 1980s, and Vajiralongkorn lived for some years with a common law wife, Yuvadhida Polpraserth (born 1962), with whom he had four sons and a daughter. The lack of a legitimate male heir was the main reason that Thailand legislated to allow women to inherit the throne.
According to the December 1999 issue of Asiaweek, Vajiralongkorn's relationship with Yuvadhida came to an end in 1996 when former prime minister Banharn Silapa-archa made a statement that the then Air Chief Marshall Anand Rodsamkhan was dismissed from his posting at the Royal Palace, prompting rumors that there had been an extra-marital affair.
Vajiralongkorn married again, to Mom Srirasmi Mahidol na Ayuthaya, later elevated to HRH Princess Srirasmi, on February 10, 2001, although this was not disclosed until recently. She gave birth to a boy on April 29, 2005.
Vajiralongkorn had children with:

With Princess Soamsavali Kitiyakara:
With Yuvadhida Polpraserth he had five children:
Sons born by Yuvadhida are unlikely to be regarded legitimate to inherit the throne and reportedly have been stripped of their royal title by their father. They now live in the United States.

HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, the youngest daughter of HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, is planning to open her first fashion store at Siam Paragon. The Sirivannavari boutique will be on the first floor of the luxury shopping mall in central Bangkok.

''It will be opened on Jan 8 next year, which will coincide with my birthday and the brand will have an image of a peacock as its logo,'' the designer princess said at a press conference at the Fashion Trend Center at CentralWorld on Friday.

''The products will be separated into two lines, which will be haute couture and ready-to-wear,'' said the princess, who is a first-year student at the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Chulalongkorn University. Since deciding to study fashion design, Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana has taken part in a few design events, including Bangkok Fashion Week 2005.

i was actually impressed during the last SEA Games that members of the Thai Royal Family are very active, sports-wise, in representing their country.

I am very interested in the thai royal family. I would like to ask the thai people.
1) Do the thai people like the crown prince?
Well,It's hard to answer to this since Thai people hold a different opinion.Me myself i can say that i respect the whole royal houshold but the prince has too much affairs with many women and has numerous illegimate children, plus There are many rumours about his bad behaviors which i can't state here in Public
)2. Do the thai people like the crown prince's new wife?
Well,Let's say that we can accept her since she is his second wife but there are numerous rumours about her past and background which why we have to keep our mouth shut.
3) Is Princess Sirindhorn role similar to crown princess?
I presume she is like the female hier of the crown.Something like that. She did achived the title when The crown prince hadn't yet remarried(and had only 2 daughter) so i guess that the King might think that The princess would be suitable to rule too. This i'm not quite sure.
4) When the crown prince becomes king, will princess srirasmi become queen? Or princess consort?
Yes,but you know. This we can't repete in Thailand.....'coz you know...speaking of the king pass away is too greive to say.
The extreme left is Princess Siripachuthaporn, the second left is(i admit i can't see her face properly)Princess Patcharakitiyapa and the 3rd left is princees Siriwanwaree.

I am not speaking on behalf of that thai people. So it's what i think that really go on thai people's mind.:)

Thanks very much. And congratulations to the thai people.
Thank you we are pround too.:)

To Peggy:

1) I think the crown prince had 5 children with a common law wife. Or did he have more children than this? Can you tell us in general why thai people have their views of the crown prince?

2) Can you tell us in general the background of the princess consort? The story is that she met him when she was working for him and they have known each other for 10 years. Is there more to this story?

I can't think of one person I know who is from Thailand and I have so wanted to ask questions about this Royal Family.
First, I wonder what kind of government Thailand has and what powers the King has?
- Thailand is a democratic country. We have the constution which states the power of the king and the gouverment. The king has no right to use the power directly since 1930.He must use it through the courts, the gouverment and the parliament but i can see that you must think that he has the absolute power since he seems to do a lot of things.I can say that he can just stay on the throne and do nothing since he has nothing to do to rule the country.Instead he went out to solve the people's problems and gave a numerous useful project to help them. That's why he is so beloved. In the description of the constitution,The King may give advises to the gouverment which they can ignore but now that he is so beloved, the gouverment has to come to ask his advises before they process anything.
What role does the Queen play -- does she do humanitarian work or is she in the "background" so to speak? Is she also highly regarded by the Thai
people?
- You may think she is a minor role in the household.I can say that she is honored as much as the king but you may not know since her celebration (12/08) is not widely know here but only in Thailand. She poppularise the king's projects and even has her own helpful projects for thais.
What kind of people are the Crown Prince and his wife?
-This i have already answer.
Are they also thought to have the kind of integrity the King does?
- Well,They did help the king and we pay respect to him as well, but somehow his integrity his merciness and his kindness don't show as much as the King.So all i can say is he is respectable(and that's all.)
I have been struck by the warm hospitality of this royal family to all their royal visitors
- Thank you,Our tradition is to treat the guest better than treat ourself and God know how delighted we are to recieve a guest.
-- they have been actively involved in making their guests feel at home from the arrival ceremony right through their involvement in all aspects of the two day festivities
-As i have aswered above.
-- is this typical of Thai royalty or is this particular to this royal family? -- is it typical of the Thai people?
-well,i cannot comment on other royalties but let's say that they recieve guests as warmliest as they could.I can say it because i have seen many has come up and gone away too delighted for words.
How prominent is the practice of Buddhism in Thailand's culture? The king made several references to Buddhist tenets in a couple of speeches I read and seems to be very influenced by this religion/philosophy -- is that so?
Yes,we are influenced by the Buddhism since 97% of Thai people is buddism. The King is the defander of the religion. The gouverment also support the people to use the buddism practise in thier life. You may have heard that Buddisme is a peaceful religion(and i don't mean Buddism is the only one)
If you can even answer a few of my questions, I'd be grateful. Also, are others interested in these questions or have others? If not, sorry to bore everyone and I'll continue through PM's
Never mind,i like it but remember that i can not answer this question on behalf of my country. What i state here is what really going on most of thai people's mind.Thank you:)

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Peggy. I have had no knowledge of the Crown Prince before this. I did think it was interesting that - through photos - Princess Sirindhorn seemed to have warm relationships with several of the visiting royals but I didn't pick up on that with the Crown Prince. Having read your description, is the Crown Prince a bit of a disappointment to his parents? Will he necessarily become the next King or could Thailand have a Queen in Princess Sirindhorn -- who seems to do an exceptional amount of good work?

1st I'd love to thank you so much for your lovely information,purple_platinum!!

2nd I just already reply q. from cutie about something you would to know the answer from Thai people.

But about the problem of picture post,my reply move to the other page and I think you may don't see it.

My pleasure:) .

I have had no knowledge of the Crown Prince before this. I did think it was interesting that - through photos - Princess Sirindhorn seemed to have warm relationships with several of the visiting royals but I didn't pick up on that with the Crown Prince.

Princess Sirindhon is also most beloved in Thailand since she is so kind and so friendly. She did many great jobs alongside the king and has made a good relationship btw our country and the others by visiting them(while the crown prince usually doesn't as much). She is also more popular that the crown prince bacause of her kindness, her smiling her wisdom and her sincererity.;)

Having read your description, is the Crown Prince a bit of a disappointment to his parents?

This i do not know..but hey,if your son had been like him. What were your feelings toward him then?;)

Will he necessarily become the next King or could Thailand have a Queen in Princess Sirindhorn -- who seems to do an exceptional amount of good work?

Well, there has been much dicussions about this in Thailand but the solution seems so unclear.Since the crown prince is here to stay and Princess Sirindhorn has the right too.
