Reburial of Empress Marie Feodorovna: 23-28 September 2006

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Prince and Princess Michael rarely carry out official engagements, so it's not abnormal for what they do to not be mentioned. Michael might attend the reburial, but, unless something comes out of BP naming him as EIIR's official representative, he's attending in a private capacity as a friend of the Romanov family -- and private engagements aren't listed in the Court Circular (almost all of Michael's engagements fall under the category of private engagements).

This would probably be considered as a funeral and attendance at funerals isn't mentioned in the Court Circular so it will be a suprise as to who turns up but I am 99.9% sure that Prince Michael will be there.

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs have made a web-page for those who want to follow the Reburial of Empress Marie Feodorovna, from 23.- 28. September, 2006, in Denmark and Russia.

http://www.reburial.um.dk/en - The English version (is very poor in links/material at the moment)
http://www.reburial.um.dk/da - The Danish version
http://www.reburial.um.dk/ru - The Russian version - or I'm assuming it is Russian, since I don't actually know it.

It's truth that english version lacks of material but still there's gallery with few but interesting photos like p.es Empress with king Christian or family portrait.

Thanks for that link Lady Jennifer. Interestingly, I found this photograph from the reburial of Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna. Notice that in the article, it says that the coffin of Marie will remained closed but for Alexandra it was opened and Michael von Habsburg-Lothringen is shown attending to her body. It'll be interesting to see what form the reburial service takes.

who is grand duchess alexandra pavolvna ?
and how is michael von. hasburg-lothringen related to her ?

I believe Alexandra was a daughter of Paul I of Russia and his second wife Sophie of Wurttemberg. I believe Michael is a great-great-great grandson or some such distant relative but apparantly Orthodox and so was called upon to attend her reburial.

Michael von Habsburg-Lothringen is descendant from Grand Duchess Alexandra Alexandrovna Romanoff–Holstein–Gottorp, who was Emperor Alexander II’s eldest daughter.

Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna was the daughter of Emperor Paul I and Marie Fedorovna of Wurttemberg. She married Archduke Joseph of Austria.

Sophie of Wurttenberg was the wife of Willhelm III of the Netherlands (who was also Grand Duke of Luxemburg). Since they had no male issue and Luxemburgh practiced the Salic law, Duke Adolf of Nassau (distant relative) became Frand Duke Adolphe of Luxemburg.

I was in Roskilde Cathedral today - and was admitted to the crypt where Marie/Dagmar currently is resting. If you're in Denmark before September 10th, and want to visit it, it is open, but after that they're closing it in connection with the reburial.

In other news: Xenia Kulikovsky was interviewed in this weeks edition of Billed Bladet. She is slightly hurt, as she and her two brothers hasn't been invited to the reburial - being direct descendants of Marie and living in Denmark - while more far out branches of the Romanov family, who were not directly related in such a close manner, have been invited to all the events.

Thanks for the pictures. Is Xenia the great granddaughter of Marie? That is unfair that Marie's direct descendants aren't invited to attend. I would think that they would want direct descendants to be at the reburial.

Xenia is the daughter of Marie's daughter Olga's son Guri. Apparently neither she nor her brothers Leonid or Alexander were invited. Xenia, apparently, felt that it was rather odd as she had met Queen Margrethe II on several occasions where Xenia had talked about her grandmother Olga and the family.

Xenia's son Paul had apparently been allowed to be on the ship bringing Marie back to Russia - after prompting the Danish foreign department on it.

I wonder if an official guest-list will be issued for the ceremony at Roskilde?

Thank you Anne for the pictures from the crypt. I wonder what will happen to the space where Marie's coffin has stood until this day, will they perhaps place a memorial plaque there - or just leave it empty?

How rude not to invite Xenia and her son to the events! As direct descendants they should be guaranteed invites to all the official ceremonies surrounding this event.

In the pictures of the coffin posted by Norwegianne, does anyone know what is that red-white-blue disc next to the coffin? Does it have a special meaning? Is this some type of symbolic ornament they use in Denmark for funerals?

Archduke Michael of austria is descending from Archduke Joseph and his third wife Duchess Maria Dorothea of Württemberg (who was a cousin iof Alexandra as her father Ludwig and her mother Maria Feodorowna where siblings).
Archduke Joseph and Alxandra had only on child Alexandrine, born and died 08.03.1801.

I read in the weekend paper that the Troitsky Cathedral in St Petersburg had burnt down, will this affect the reburiel ceremony?

A note to Danish members, and anybody else who gets DR1: Queen Margrethe will give an interview on DR1 on Monday, 19.30 Danish time, where she'll talk about Empress Dagmar in connection with the reburial.

Does anyone have any possible explanations for this? I am curious as well.

I heard an interview with Xenia today (Dagmars great grandaughter) And she said that she was going to attend the funeral.
Just so you all know

In Majesty Magazine they have an article on the reburial (has Prince Harry on the cover)- Vol 27, No. 9. I haven't had a chance to read the article yet (just got the issue in the mail- a little later than normal). It has some pictures that I'd never seen before.

Danish-born Czarina to make final journey to be reunited with Russia's imperial family

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Sept. 22 — The circumstances may be solemn, but Dimitry Romanov is quietly rejoicing.

On Saturday, the 80-year-old retired bank clerk will escort the remains of his distant relative Czarina Maria Feodorovna, the mother of Russia's last emperor, on a final journey from Denmark to St. Petersburg.

''Strangely enough, it is a joyful event,'' said Romanov, who lives in Denmark. ''She will finally rest with her family.''

Finally she will be laid to rest be laid to rest beside her Husband it will be a Grand, Moving day I Cant wait for pics. :) + Rest in Peace Dear Empress +

Does anyone know if there will be a live feed of the reburial? Will Christian accompany his parents to Russia? I'd heard about this being discussed between Denmark and Russia so long ago, and I'm so glad that it's finally being put into action. I think it's what Marie would have wanted. So the ceremony should be starting any moment now?

I think it's very disappointing for Xenia and her brothers to not be attending. Are there going to be any other descendants of Marie that actually attend the reburial? Obviously none from her four sons, since all four of them and five of her male-line grandchildren predeceased her, and the sixth died in a car wreck a few years after her death without having any children. So will any of GDss Xenia or Olga's descedants actually be allowed to go?

The transmission has started.

Princess Birgitte of Bourbon Parma, in a wheelchair, is escorted by her grandson Jacques (sp?). According to the commentators, the family lives in the area.

And Mærsk McKinney Møller with his daughter, arrived just after them.

It seems that Xenia might've been a bit premature in her interview in Billed Bladet, as they seem to have been invited after all. Paul Kulikovsky will be giving a memorial speech, according to the Danish foreign ministry.

Nicolas Romanoff and wife arrived, along with a multitude of other Romanoffs. Olga Romanoff, and Xenia Kulikovsky sitting next to each other.

Countess Ruth of Rosenborg arrived with her son Count Axel of Rosenborg. As well as a bunch of many other of the Rosenborg branches.

Krone 11. Princess Elisabeth of Denmark and her brothers with their wives: Count Christian and Countess Dorte of Rosenborg, and Count Ingolf and Countess Sussi of Rosenborg

Krone 5. Princess Benedikte of Denmark

Prince Joachim arrived solo.

Krone 1. Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary arrives. Mary curtsied slightly before the coffin, I think.

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik arrives, so the service will start shortly. The queen is wearing a hat with a blue feather, and also curtsied (more deeply than Mary, despite a recent knee surgery) in front of the coffin. The commentator mentioned that it was one of the few times she'd seen Queen Margrethe curtsy after becoming a queen.
