May 13, 2005: Princess Margriet visited the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa where schoolchildren dressed as soldiers enacted the liberation of The Netherlands. Later, she had a visit with the Canadian Governer General Adrienne Clarkson.

Princess Margriet & her husband had another busy day in Ottawa yesterday. Early in the morning they visited Rockcliffe Park Public School (which her sisters Beatrix & Irene had attended during the war). While there, they watched a play hilighting the strong friendship between the Netherlands & Canada. They also met with veterans while at the school.

Then it was on to the new Canadian War Museum for a quick tour, followed by lunch at Rideau Hall with the Governor General. Then off to Major's Hill Park for the opening of the Tulip Festival. Then to Commissioners Park to unveil a plaque dedicating a flower bed in honour of her mother, Queen Juliana.

May 14 2005 Princess Margriet & Pieter Van Vollenhoven visited the Canadian War Memorial in Ottawa today to lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

It was a rather gloomy, cold day, which I guess is appropriate for a solemn ceremony.

After another very successful trip to Canada, Princess Margriet is already back into the full swing of royal duties, with two public appearances this weekend alone. I don't know how she does it. Prior to her visit to Canada, she was very busy with VE Day celebrations. And her days in Canada were often long, with engagements from morning until late evening.

But, she was always very gracious and very generous with her time, even giving impromptu interviews to TV reporters.

The official purpose of her visit was to thank veterans who took part in the liberation of the Netherlands. (The unofficial purpose, was of course to give the people of Ottawa another chance to see "their" princess). For the hundreds of veterans that she met, it must have been a very moving experience - one which they will be talking about for the rest of their lives.

Ah ... well, La-la Land is a wonderful place to go to sometimes! Glad you enjoyed the pics Alexandria. It is a kind of exciting time right now for us Canadians eh, with all these royal visits this Spring. First Margriet, now the Queen & soon Edward & Sophie. It will seem so quiet once they have all left. Then its back to "royalty watching" from afar again. But at least with this forum, no one ever seems too far away! Thank you so much for that.

National Defence [of Canada] has published photos from the wonderful parade in Apeldoorn on May 8th, 2005. I thought I would post some of them, since they are much better quality than the pictures I originally posted made from TV screen caps.

It's sad to think that this will be the last parade ... but the vets are aging ... and its time to move on ... Thanks to the kind people of the Netherlands for treating our veterans so well!

May 27 2005 Princess Margriet looked very elegant as she opened the Hunebed Museum in Borger. Later in the day, she reopened the Town Hall in Leeuwarden.

Princess Margriet was supposed to carry out an engagement in The Hague today, but according to the official site of the Dutch royal family, she has had a fall and broken one of her bones (sorry my knowledge of the Dutch language is not good enough to figure out which bone).

Anyone who has had a bad fracture knows how painful and debilitating it is. (I was clumsy earlier this year and fell down the stairs and had a bad break in my foot. Only now, 4 months later, am I able to start to walk normally again. It's not fun!)

My heartfelt sympathies go out to the Princess. I hope she has a speedy recovery so she can soon be playing with her grandchildren again (including the newest edition to the family, little Felicia).

I'm a little confused - the revamped version of the official website for the royal family says that Margriet is chair of the standing commission of the International Red Cross (see http://www.koninklijkhuis.nl/english/content.jsp?objectid=5538). But didn't she give that position up in December 2003? Was she recently re-elected?

Has anyone heard any news about Margriet? I hope that the healing process is going well, and that she is feeling much, much better these days.

Since there aren't any new pictures of Margriet (& we may not see her until her son's wedding next month), I thought I would post some retrospective photographs of the princess.

The beginning years: Canada

1. January 1943 Margriet at the Ottawa Civic Hospital with her mother Princess Juliana. The Parliament of Canada passed a special law declaring Princess Juliana's rooms at the hospital as extraterritorial so that her child would have exclusively Dutch and not dual nationality.
2. June 29th 1943 Margriet with her parents on the occasion of her baptism at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Ottawa. Among her godparents were Franklin D. Roosevelt and Great Britain’s Queen Mary.
3. October 1943 Posing for the royal family’s Christmas greeting card, Margriet is already at ease dealing with photographers.
4. Summer 1944 Taking a break in Cape Cod, Massachusetts with her mother and sisters Beatrix and Irene.
5. 1945 Ottawa
6. 1945 Beatrix, Margriet, Juliana and Irene pose in Ottawa.
7. Summer 1945 With the war in Europe over, Juliana and her daughters prepare to return to the Netherlands. Here, they are pictured in New York City, just before boarding the ship that will take them home.
8. August 2nd 1945 Clutching a cherished doll, Margriet sets foot on Dutch soil for the first time.

August 2nd 1945 The royal family set foot on Dutch soil at a place called Teuge. There is still a small local airport that mostly is been used to fly sports-planes. Its been situated 7 kilometers ( i am sorry i don,t now the measurments you use) from apeldoorn.

1. August 4th 1945 Just a few days after arriving in the Netherlands, the princesses attend a children’s show at Soestdijk Palace.
2. Circa 1945/1946 Margriet settles in to life at Soestdijk Palace.
3. June 7th 1946 at Soestdijk Palace.
4. August 31st 1946 “Stealing the show” at celebrations for her grandmother Wilhelmina’s birthday.
5. 1947 Margriet with her mother and her little sister Christine, born in February 1947.
6. January 31st 1948 The princesses all dressed up to celebrate Beatrix’s 10th Birthday.
7. September 6th 1948 Juliana is inaugurated as Queen.
8. December 1948 With Christine and an unidentified woman (perhaps their nanny).

Thanks for the update Dutch Royal! I hadn't heard anything about Margriet, but didn't know if that was because I am living so far away from the Netherlands. Yes, I hope she is feeling very good by the time the wedding comes around. I imagine that all of the planning for the two weddings this year are keeping her very busy!
