Methinks Prince Rainier would be very much happier if they had the same mechanism in Monaco as they do in The Netherlands and Luxembourg .... abdication.

Just think of the advantages to all, we don't see Prince Rainier visibly shrinking in front of us, and on the other hand Prince Rainier could save himself a big effort in not having to look presentable to press and media every day of these - what are supposed to his golden years.

Something tells me Rainier would fear giving up everything to Albert at this stage. If he were to abd. now, I think he'd probably be forced to give Caroline the throne. Now, I understand this will likely never happen (he'll skirt Albert for Caroline), but, at this point, with Albert's massive immaturity and tendency toward partying and womanizing, a Monaco ruled by Caroline would provide him the best dreams at night.


Now, there's nothing I'd like more (except a great guy, money, timeles beauty, celebrity, peace of mind, attainment of nirvana, a chateau in the south of france, and 50 million other selfish things) than to see Rainier on a beach in Britanny spending his remaining days in a serene chateau strolling his gardens and driving his antique cars, but, to be real, Rainier will live and die monarch.

Grecka, I agree that Rainier will live and die a monarch. Isn't he the longest-reigning monarch? That's one for the history books.

I don't think that Albert's personal life has anything to do with his ability to rule Monaco. However, it also wouldn't do Albert and Monaco any good if he's out there still partying and womanizing.

Lastly, I think that the constitutional change in 2002 (allowing Caroline, Stephanie, and their children to succeed should Albert die without an heir) is sort of an insurance on that possibility. Albert has always said that he is aware of the responsibilities ahead and prepared for it; I'm sure he knows that, however great the pressure, producing an heir or heirs is part of the call of duty. Time will only tell.

Monte Carlo Circus Festival

Rainier was overcome with emotion as the crowd gave him a huge standing ovation. My understanding was that they began applauding as he came in and it just went on and on and on. People were then standing and cheering and shouting his name. He was clearly overcome with emotion, and his subject were clearly thrilled to see him. Very touching.

What a sweet thing to do. I find the picture of him crying to be very endearing. It obviously means alot to him that the people of Monaco love him and are interested in his well being. It makes me like him even more.

The article at hello also mentions that he was advised against attending by his doctors and attendants. He issued a statement saying so and that if he was a reasonable person he'd stay home. It's obvious how much the annual circus means to him and I think the standing ovation makes it all the more special and sweet.

Interestingly enough, there is a poll going on over at hellomagazine.com about his public display of emotion. The two poll options are endearing and heartwarming or embarrassing in public. As I said before, I find it to be sweet and endearing.

I find it hard to think anyone would think of it otherwise. He is someone who sadly probably won't be with us much longer...and obviously his subjects know that. It was increadibly touching to see them so affected by seeing him, and vice versa. It is hard to think of this happening anywhere else...the Grimaldi's are so close to their subjects.

Anyway - it really seemed like Albert and (especially) Stephanie seemed touched by the whole thing as well.

Well the good news is that they were tears of joy...that family has had enough of the other kind.

Prince Ranier looked so frail and fragile at the circus. It was very courageous of him to go the circus event even when his doctors warned him against it.

I regret to say it, but I think he disobeyed the orders of his doctor and attended the circus because I think he realizes it's the last time he'll get to go.

Rough Year for HSH

I think we need to be prepared for the fact that HSH probably won't make it thru this year. He is 81 and has been hospitalized something like five times in the past 12 months. That doesn't sound good to me. I wish him a speedy recovery...but I also hope that he is not in any discomfort.

I don't know about that. Rainier's pretty tough. I think he might be able to survive being hit in the head by a large brick travelling at 300 mph.

Does anyone know what the latest is regarding Prince Rainier? Last I read was that he was still in the hospital, but was at least out of bed moving around.
