Prince Gabriel, Prince Emmanuel & Princess Eléonore: News & Events, Oct. 2019 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
To me he will go to a High School.Strange the word Académie.
Thanks. By 'high school' I suppose you mean 'hogeschool', which would be 'a university of applied science' or polytechnic or something along those lines, i.e. a type of teaching-focused higher education (in contrast to a more research-focused university).

(for those who are less familiar with the binary system in HE and would think of secondary education when hearing the word 'high school')

In Wallonia they use the same words as in Dutch: haute école spécialisée. Perhaps that is what maria-olivia meant?

The word "academy" was used by a journalist, not by a press release from court.

That's not correct, it was also used in the press release from the court. In the French version it says "une académie" and in the Dutch version it says "een academie".

What is your interpretation, Jelka? As it seems they are intentionally vague about it.

It's really hard to interpret such a short message. The entire press release is only three sentences long, of which only one is about his educational plans next year. It is indeed intentionally vague, so I can only suspect this is by the prince his own wishes, most probably to keep his privacy as much as possible.

Academy in english is not as une (een) academie in French or Dutch. They are all on holidays and the Court did a mistake . All what we know is that he will go abroad in an unknown Country !. Only Eleonore at Home !

OK, thank you. We'll find out in a couple of years what he did & where.

It's nice to see that Philippe & Mathilde's children can go their own way, taking in mind their personalities and interests.

-Elisabeth: the only one who already wanted to go abroad during her high school years (Wales), the military afterwards (because of her role, but she did very well), and then studies in history (personal interest) and politics & public policy (which will serve her well later). She's a real intellectual high flyer. Brains and disciplin.
- Gabriel: A year in Warwickshire to improve his maths skills, before starting an academic career at the Military Academy. Combination of academia and the physical part of the army which he also loves.
- Emmanuel: A different trajectory from his siblings because of dyslexia, then an internationally oriented schooling in English. Now a clear focus on languages and sports. He's granted the privacy he obviously longs for to develop his academic career.
- Will be interesting to see the direction Eléonore heads in. We know nothing about her academic interests so far.

Prince Gabriël turns 21 and two new pictures have been shared. The first photo was taken at the royal domain of Laeken by Vlad Vanderkelen. The second photo was taken during the summer camp of the Royal Military School in Leopoldsburg by its photographer, Loan Silvestre.

Prince Gabriel, as part of his training at the Royal Military Academy, will be going to the Académie Militaire de Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan in France for a five-month Erasmus term starting this month. He will study geopolitics in English.

This news makes me wonder if he will eventually stay in the Army even after finishing the Academy for a full time career, serving his country this way considering he cannot be a full time royal while he is (and will be for a few more years) the "spare" of the RF.

His Erasmus starts this month! Only Eléonore left at home.

I also believe Gabriël will stay in the army. Although he'll only be 22 when he graduates next year, so he could still pursue a master's degree in *something else* somewhere else. We'll see.

A full time carreer in the army, as in for the next decades you mean? I don't see that happening, if only for the fact that he will have to provide for himself and the army salary does not finance an upper class life style. I would imagine a trajectory as his cousins Amedeo and Joachim will be more likely and he will end up in a discreet but well paid carreer path such as finance eventually. But we will see.

I agree with you, he has to maintain a certain lifestyle, but he's still doing the full 3 year course, so, as I said before, perhaps he'll pursue other interests once he finishes his studies at the KMS, but so far he seems to really love it (which is great).

Btw, I came across this worrying article about Saint Cyr

If he is in active service, I am not sure if he will be able to pursue a master's degree immediately after graduating from the Royal Military Academy as he will have to report to his assigned unit for specialist training and/or operational deployment.

I hope he stays in the Army and makes it a long-term career. He is a spare in a royal family that is being downsized in the next generation (he and his younger siblings won't get state funding like Aunt Astrid or Uncle Laurent), so he needs to find a career and a purpose in life for himself. It looks like he enjoys miltary life, especially the physical side of it, so it might be a good fit.

Of all the royals out there, the Belgians are the one who looks more austere and prone to live a more down to earth lifestyle (but maybe they're just more discreet about it unlike other royals). So I can see Gabriel doing that, especially since he has opted for the full course at the RMA and I am sure he has some savings/funds that can help him living as a prince in the meantime. On the other hand, if he decides to live as a civilian, I don't see him pursuit a finance career: his current studies are suggesting something different at the moment. Given his A Levels in maths and physics a scientific/technological field is more likely.

Lots and lots of aristocratic men without an academic profile of economics, but with an international network of rich, influential people work in the banking industry. Why do you think London is so popular among these circles? They all work in the city. Not necessarily with numbers or on the floor, no they bring in the clients and at the same time they get a huge salary and bonuses. Will Gabriel do the same, no idea but I'm certain he won't go for a career in the military. His name will get him into any branch he's interesed in anyway.

Gabriel’s uncle and cousin work at a bank in Switzerland (and did spe ialize in that area), so that was what Marengo was referring to, more than just banking in on your name in London. I'm quite sure the latter would not fit Philippe and Mathilde's expectations for their son (and spare).

Most aristocratic sons who have jobs in finance do in fact have an education in that field. Not saying their background doesn't help but they do pursue training.

Prince Lorenz both his sons and one daughter all have studied economics at university. They didn't simply walk into finance.

I agree with @Somebody when they says it would completely go against Philippe's and Mathilde's upbringing principles if their children "milked" their names and titles. Surely they have their perks and we saw it when Elisabeth was front and center during her graduation in Oxford, but P and M have always given their children space to explore and fulfill their interests freely but especially without any interference or privilege.

As we have discussed in another forum, a military career in most cases is not a life-long career anyway.

The UK armed forces, for example, which are bigger than the Belgian armed forces in personnel size, but much smaller than the US armed forces, now have, I think, only 7 (?) four-star generals or equivalent (e.g. admiral in the Navy or air marshal in the Air Force). The number of general officers is somewhat bigger if you also consider three-star and two-star ranks, but, even so, I am pretty sure that the available general staff positions must be much smaller than the intake of second lieutenants (or equivalent in the other branches).

In other words, most junior officers know that they will never make to general (or equivalent). I suppose that you have to stay in service for a certain number of years to collect any pension benefits (maybe 20 years now in the US or the UK?), but many officers will leave at a still relatively young age as captains or majors or, if they are lucky, and work hard, make to lieutenant colonel or colonel (or equivalent in other branches).

I don't claim to know the details, but the general idea is that, when they leave the military, they are still able, and do not have a particular high guaranteed income from their pension benefits, nor a particular significant asset wealth (as it is difficult to do things like buying a house for example when you are constantly moving from one place to another and living in military bases). In other words, they have to find themselves a new occupation to supplement their income.

I don't think that is particularly difficult in the United States, or perhaps the United Kingdom, because retired military officers frequently move into consulting or defense / security / intelligence jobs in the private sector, and their miitary experience and expertise is highly valued and marketable. However, as we have also discussed, getting any type of private job is more complicated for a son of a monarch like Prince Gabriel because of the usual issues of conflicts of interest, especially if, for example, he worked, as many retired officers do, for defense companies that rely mostly on government contracts.

I hope Gabriel can have a solid full-time 10 or 20-year stint in the military as some royals in other countries have done, if that is something that he likes. But, since he is not going to get a state dotation and, as a Belgian Coburg, will probably not inherit much private wealth either, he must be advised that he needs to have a Plan B after he leaves the military as a middle-aged man.

I really doubt very much that there will be a full time carreer in the army. Although respectable enough, it simply doesn’t even pay a lot. With salaries for the most part between 30.000 and 40.000 EUR a year he won’t be able to afford a middle middle class lifestyle even, unless his wife will be the main provider or if the family steps in. Even the highest paid job will be less well paid than any middle management function in a sizable company.

Unless he is really passionate about the job -which he might be- I doubt very much it will be a long-term carreer for him.

Same goes for the gentleman farmer lifestyle I saw proposed in another thread: it will be difficult to make ends meet and keep some sort of lifestyle people expect of reigning royalty. Prince Joachim at least inherited a large estate and did not have to purchase it, and he still had trouble keeping it up & needed to sell.

It’s nice to see him smiling (and he has a nice one)!
