Bunte, the German tabloid, has an article, that Queen Margarethe II, even after her abdication, could be called upon as "Rigsforstander". i.e. Head of State - I think, when the then King Frederik will be abroad.

(Sorry, only in German!)
The others elegible for this position are Prince Christian, the then Queen Mary, Prince Joachim and Princess Benedikte.
Hmm... Was there ever a coup in Denmark by a Rigsforstander, when a Monarch was abroad? I mean, ok, they are all family, one big, happy family... - nevertheless!
No, but one King was traveling in Italy, while the State Council looked after things at home, when he wrote home and asked to be relieved of his duties. They had to send someone to Italy, to persuade him to come back, he was after all king by God's grace and all that. And while Italy is beautiful and has a lot of great art (who doesn't think so!) he had his duties.
That was IIRC Christian V in the early 1700s.

The big day is coming up! And M&F need not worry about the turnout!
The first train and busloads of Jutlanders and citizens of Funen have already left for Copenhagen. There will be many more tomorrow.
You are going to witness Denmark going full royalist come Sunday! We rarely miss an opportunity to celebrate something as a tribe and considering that we are the wild latinos of Scandinavia, it's gonna be party-time. Also because many wish to show their appreciation for QMII.
So if you happened to be in Copenhagen Sunday you'd be in for a special experience.
It has occurred to me that the very short official notice may have been for security reasons. Terrorist attacks always being something to keep in mind. But there are others - me pointing east - that could be tempted to try and disrupt things. (There is as you know an ongoing cyber-war.)
The government will increase the apanage for the DRF as a whole.
Partly because QMII will retain a court befitting of her status. She will not be retiring into a meager life.
At the same time the government envision a different role for M&F, when they become the regent couple.
My guess is that this means a way more active role for M&F.
We are talking about one outgoing and incoming state visit a year - at least.
At least two long official visits, promoting Danish commerce a year.
Of course the summer trips with Dannebrog, and who knows perhaps a third once in a while.
But I think we will also see M&F in a more political role. QMII has avoided to voice a political opinion when on the job, and only a very recent year has she uttered a political opinion - which were fully in line with a majority in the Parliament.
That is something M&F are already very used to. And we are going to see more of that. M&F will, I suspect, to a higher degree become the spokespersons for a political majority in the Parliament.
It's going to be interesting to see this change. But one thing is almost a guarantee: M&F are going to earn their holidays from now on!

ADDED:
According to Danish media, Tasmania in general and Hobart in particular are going to celebrate this proclamation - in particular Mary. The city of Hobart will present M&F with a handmade piece of furniture.
