Merit-making ceremony
Amarin Winitchai Throne Hall

from 60celebration's site

Once in a lifetime
Bangkok turns yellow as people from all walks of life are united in celebrating His Majesty's Diamond Jubilee

There was weeping, cheering and silent reverence as hundreds of thousands of people converged to hear His Majesty the King speak on the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne.

The monarch seemed as moved by the massive congregation - which turned the Royal Plaza and the length of Ratchadamnoen avenue into a sea of yellow - as his loyal subjects who had come together from all over the country.
The King thanked the organisers of the celebration and well-wishers, saying their spirit of kindness had lifted his inner strength.
Speaking at about midday, he stressed the importance to the country of unity, compassion and moral integrity.

"Everyone should think and act with honesty while staying true to the rules and respecting equality," he said.
Hoisting yellow flags bearing the royal insignia, people from all walks of life sent up a deafening roar when the King appeared on the balcony of the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall.
When he retreated with a wave after the short address, the crowd bade farewell to him with repeated chants of "Long Live the King".

Wise words as His Majesty addresses the nation

His Majesty the King's speech delivered at the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall yesterday:
"I'm very delighted to be in the midst of this great congregation of individuals from all institutions of the country and the public at large. I thank you for your complimentary wishes and the grand celebrations which everyone has put in the effort to arrange especially for me. The government has organised today's event in a way definitive of an orderly and elaborate affair, characterising the collective hospitality of the Thai people, expressed throughout the land and by all of you here before me. This is truly overwhelming given the depth of the display of sincere goodwill you have carried with you. I thank you all.

The spirit, full of kind intentions and solidarity that is common among each one of us, has lifted my inner strength. It is uplifting also to think of the moral integrity which is the basis of love and unity binding us Thais together as we preserve the nation and help it prosper.
But firstly, we should be compassionate to each other in our thoughts, speech and actions in order to achieve progress. Secondly, we must come to the aid of each other and work for the mutual well-being of ourselves, others and of the nation as a whole. Thirdly, everyone should think and act with honesty while staying true to the rules and respecting equality. Fourthly, as everyone strives to ensure their thoughts and views conform to righteousness and remain steadfast to reason, their minds and conduct must be in tandem with virtuous resolve. If this is achieved, there can be no doubt Thailand will stand proud and tall forever. I urge everyone in this congregation and Thais from all walks of life to cherish and firmly uphold righteousness and moral integrity. This dedication to moral security should be undertaken without interruption, so the country can live on with happiness, now and in the future.

May the sacred Phra Sri Radhanatrai (Buddhism's Triple Gems) and the forces of the highest reverence protect our country from danger and bless all Thais with joy, happiness and prosperity."

Waiting no problem for well-wishers
People pay tribute to their 'guiding light and inspiration'

Only 15 minutes after members of the public began to sign a book to show their respect for His Majesty the King at a tent in front of the Sahathai Samakom Pavilion, a ball-point pen supplied for the well-wishers ran out of ink.
Officials were busy for hours replacing pens and adding pages to the books, which were quickly used up as people queued for their turn to sign.
Each received souvenirs - a book about the closeness of His Majesty the King and the late Princess Mother, and a prayer book.

"The King is selfless. He is my guiding light and my inspiration. I wish him a long reign," she said.
"The King saved my life," said Mr Chucheep. "I'm alive now because I had a heart transplant thanks to a royally-initiated project."
Songyos Thammasaro, 38, said: "The King has solved so many problems. Everything he has told us or warned the public of is always a solution to certain problems [facing us].
"What he says is timeless and universal. His warning that we should not depend totally on technology strikes a chord in me."

20,000 fireworks illuminate Bangkok

Bangkok's skies were set aglow by another tableau of high-tech fireworks celebrating the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne.
Fireworks displays Saturday night, launched from barges anchored in the Chao Phraya river between the Phra Buddhayodfah and Phra Pinkhao Bridges, set the capital's night skies aglow with dazzling colours, sounds and pageantry.
The public were invited to see the fireworks along both banks of the river, starting at 8:30 pm. Thousands ignored isolated thunderstorms around the capital to watch.

An official who led a technical team said the fireworks would be launched from three 90-foot barges moored in the mid-Chao Phraya river in front of Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn.
Saturday's 20,000 nighttime fireworks display is supported by the Japanese government.
Another fireworks display to celebrate the auspicious occasion, this time sponsored by the Chinese government, will be held at the Royal Turf Club on Sunday evening.

Monks bless Thai king as world's royalty arrives for anniversary

BANGKOK (AFP) - Buddhist monks blessed Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej as part of religious celebrations to mark the 60th year on the throne of the world's longest-reigning monarch.
The ancient ritual, held in Bangkok's gilded Grand Palace, was broadcast to millions of adoring subjects nationwide as royalty from 25 countries started arriving in Thailand ahead of next week's lavish anniversary festivities.
Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko and Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah were among royals due to arrive Sunday, and Jordan's King Abdullah II and Spain's Queen Sofia were scheduled to fly in on Monday.
(...)

In Saturday's private ritual, which ended three days of religious services, 99 saffron-robed Buddhist monks chanted prayers in the ancient Pali language, in the palace's Amarin Winitchai throne hall.
The king lit candles to pay his respects to the Buddha in the ceremony attended by Queen Sirikit, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and senior government and military leaders in white uniforms.
The monks also blessed lustral water for the royal regalia -- including the crown, inlaid with gold and studded with nine precious gemstones, the royal sword, cane and fan.
White-robed Brahmin priests then performed rituals reserved for the Thai royalty to the sound of a traditional orchestra of xylophones and drums.

Thanks for all the information and pictures so far. :)
I was in Thailand in April and I was amazed at how much the Thai people respect their King. Everywhere you went there were pictures of him and from what I was told while there and what I have read since I came back I can understand why.
So Congratulations to the king for 60 years on the throne! :D ;)
