I am pleased that Albert opened the proceedings & that Sophie & Edward were there. ( Both Charlene & Sophie looked good I thought). It struck me how many ladies wore black.
 
Maybe they wore black in order to not outshine the exhibition

Like I have mentioned before I would like to see these Princess Grace gowns and permanently housed in a Monaco museum as a tribute to her classical aesthetic sensibility.And I would like to also see a retrospective of the Grace Kelly films at a festival in Monaco- just once.

Princess Grace her wedding gown is currently on dispaly at The Museum of Art
in Philadelphia, that's why it's not included in this exhibition.
 
Yestday I've been to see the exhibition in London... it was great to see some, and I do mean
some, of Princess Grace her wardrobe. I had to travell eight hours before arriving in London at the Victoria and Albert Museum (which is amazing btw), but if I had known the exhibition would be this small I would not have done so. Perhaps it was so diassapointing because I've seen the exhibition in Monaco... It's always wonderful to be able to see anything that has to do with Princess Grace, but I had not thought this exhibition would be so small. In the media there are 50 dresses mentioned, at most(!) there are 30 not 50!! Just a few pair of shoes, very few jewels, no portraits or paintings. The hat and corsage are missing from the arrival in Monaco outfit and many of the amazing gowns that were on display at The Grimaldi Forum are not there at all. Well I did buy the book and just about everything else that was availabe, but my vote goes to a permanent display of Princess Grace her wardrobe in a museum in Monaco!! In my opinion the 30th anniversery of her tragic dead would be THE occasion to do so!
 
I think this is what several of us have feared, that particularly after being spoilt by the wonderful Monaco exhibition, this would be a let down. ( The admission price of just £6 is a further indication!) I would be interested to know if the exhibitions in Rome & Paris were considerably scaled down. From what I remember reading/seeing I got the impression both were bigger than London - am I right? I also recall reading that the wedding gown was on display in both these venues. A plus point however, has to be the V & A publication to coincide with the exhibition. It's a lovely book & worth investing in. Incidentally, I have just purchased two relatively new Grace titles which I will post details/links to on the media area of the forum shortly. If you like photos of Grace they are both "must have" titles
 
So the wedding is certainly not part of the London exhibit, is that right?

I love the Wessex couple. Sophie is so short. :lol: She's shorter than Albert. That's short. :ROFLMAO:

I think that is a load of rubbish, if the dress was so fragile how come it travelled ok to the main exhibits of which the last was in russia just recently, again the uk misses out, this exhibition is nothing but a cut down version of what we should of had, why did london not get the big one that went to other countries, what a joke!!!, what also makes me laugh is the way the papers and news have been jumping all over the exhibition like they care so much about grace's memory , what a pile of crap, when was there last a film or documentry of graces on uk tv, do they ever mark her death , no they dont, neither do the papers not a mention of it ever, even on the 25th anniversay of her death there was no mention of it on tv or in any paper here in the uk, they make me sick and will do anything for a bit of tv recognition.

I have many friends in hollywood who have told me that hardly anyone on the street there recognises grace if they are shown a picture and asked to identify her, just goes to show that grace was disowned by hollywood when she left for monaco, they shuned her and no one even knows who she was, grace was right when she said how fickle hollywood is, glad she got out and moved to europe where her heritage was, even her german heritage was hidden from the american audience so they wouldnt hate her after the war, americans are so damn fickle, grace was irish/german not american, the soil you are born on is not your dna.

Your remarks are a bit strident.
When you say Grace was Irish/German is racial backround a weapon? She was by her passport an American;because she was all American and acted in the films of America and went to Europe because Prince Rainier got a dowry out her that nobody else was willing to give.
As far as this exhibition I think the Grace idolatry has gone too far. It is a bit like the The King Tut exhibition and as far as I am concerned- Monaco which has never played any of her movies at all-ever talk about fickle- should have a museum of her clothes there permanently.Why would anybody mark her twenty fifth anniversary death? Did she win the Nobel prize?
In a sense Grace was decorative piece in the backdrop of humanity- except for her Hollywood career. The Brits never liked Grace .... and her memory is now in a transitional phase.They rarely gave her credit for anything -not even beauty.Strange lot.
Sometimes I wonder if Monaco has not disowned her twenty eight years after her death- no permanent museum of her clothes or playing of her movies in a yearly cine retrospective. I think Monaco started the forgetting first and then alll the rest followed.

when I went to the royal albert and victoria museum
I was really disappointed , why do they have to gram everything into a small space they did it with queen maud of Norways clothes as well , thought it was really bad by A&V
 
Does anyone know about the wedding gift that Princess Grace received from her father in law, Prince Pierre? It was a tear drop shaped pearl topped with a little crown. I think that I remember reading that this necklace was one of her favorites. Any pictures anyone? Probably this is in the exhibit.

I have taken from the article "The Art of Style" what I feel true fashion style that transcends time. And why Princess Grace fashion sense comes across many decades later as current. I think two other icons follow this fashion sense and they are Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy

Actually, as a former staff member at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (who owns the dress), it is very very fragile. It was loaned for limited venues with "time off" between certain venues to give the fabric a rest. Why? because the bodice is lace and it supports a much heavier under skirt etc. I would suggest, since I did not work in the Dept of Costumes and Textiles that you buy the catalogue which explains why the dress is fragile and why it can only have limited travel.

Grace by the way was on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine last month so if the current generation didn't know her, they do now.

I'm trying to understand this -you complain that the newspapers jumped all over each other to cover the exhibit and then go on to say that no one in the UK talks about Princess Grace and no one cares about Princess Grace...:ermm:. As for Hollywood, just last year there was a huge event which Prince Albert II attended honoring Princess Grace as a style icon. Not long ago TCM had her as their featured star with a whole month dedicated to her movies. And Hollywood certainly did not "shun" her; on the contrary her movie star friends came to Monaco constantly after her marriage; Carey Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Mr Frank Sinatra etc vacationed there every year. As for people on the street -who cares? Does the bimbo or beach bum on the street know a picture of James Dean, Marlon Brando, Bill Holden or Donna Reed when they see one? And why in the world would they "hide" that Princess Grace had German blood on her mother's side because of the war when there were actors, singers etc who were *born in Germany* who opposed Nazism, embraced the US and were applauded?

In any event, by your criteria, even the British would not be "British" but Norman-French and Saxon-German. It's just silly. Evidently some people in Europe still don't get it -that is what being "American" is all about; it is no one nationality, anyone of any background can be an American whether by being born here or becoming a citizen. Now please, can we have some standards and not speak ill of the dead:glare:.

I can assure you that any serious person in the film industry knows who Grace Kelly is. She made 3 films with Alfred Hitchcock. He was a pioneer in the industry and is still considered to be one of the best directors ever. He made her a superstar. Rear Window is an awesome film on so may different levels.
 
I visited the London exhibition on Saturday, & thought I would share my thoughts.
Having read that this was a much scaled down affair in comparison to the earlier exhibitions, I was pleasantly surprised to see the outfits that were included. Apart from the wedding dress (which of course is a major omission) & the "ball of the century" gown, most of the exhibits were the famous outfits. These ranged from her years as an actress (several from High Society for example), her engagement/official wedding ceremony & honeymoon costumes, through to outfits worn at various stages in her life as Princess (including Zubiaur's favourite fairytale pink gown, the Kennedy meeting & her 25th wedding anniversary). In total I would say there were about 40 costumes on display. Whether it was because there were far fewer exhibits than when the exhibition was in Monaco, I found myself noting a few costumes I hadn't taken in before such as the sculptured jersey gown from the Snowdon photoshoot - which looks black & white in the portrait but is actually brown & cream, & the Yves Saint Laurent dress which Grace wore for Diana's first public engagement.
However, I have several gripes as well....
Firstly the way the costumes were exhibited. The Oscar ensemble showed the coat covering most of the dress, so no sense of the drapes or the bustle back. In fact none of the costumes revolved so it was impossible to fully appreciate the detailing of many of the outfits (surely a museum such as the V& A should know how to exhibit clothes!)
Secondly the explanation boards provided a minimal amount of information either about the costumes/designers or indeed any real context to enhance the experience for the more casual visitor. I took 4 friends along & provided a few anecdotes/informative snippets & found I was gathering a little tour party!
Finally,there was very little jewellery (surprising to me as the exhibition was sponsored by Van Cleef) & few examples of the accessories which were so important to creating what the title of the exhibition promoted about Grace - her style.
Overall I did enjoy the chance to see the exhibition again but it also made me realise that Monaco's tribute was more satisfying not because it was on a much grander scale, but because it was as much about the woman who was Grace as the clothes she wore. Please Monaco create a permanent museum for Grace.
I'd be interested to know what other people who have visited the exhibition thought of it.

Does anyone know if the exhibition is scheduled for another venue after London? ( Personally I wish it would go home to Monaco & find a permanent home, perhaps as part of the new national museum).
