Funeral of King Constantine - January 16, 2023

Rarely seen such poignant ceremony, oh my !

I agree. Greek is no barrier for the soul, but if any forumer of Orthodox faith would like to explain a little bit the proceedings it would be appriciated.

Does Queen Margrethe know Greek? She seems to be listening like she knows.

Queen Margrethe looks kind of amazed at Pavlos speaking Greek.

Oh God, Anne-Marie, Nikola and Philippos broken by Pavlo's first reading. I cannot.

She's a woman of culture and faith, I wouldn't be surprised if she understood the basics. No one should be surprised that Pavlos is capable of speaking Greek.

It's decent, not as good as Nikolaos (who, IMHO speaks the best greek out of all the slibings, despite having a slight accent) but I wouldn't be mad at it, it's decent and he rehearsed his reading.

Disclaimer: I only learned Greek before converting to Orthodoxy so don't take my opinion on an actual Greek person's greek too seriously. Lol.

I think it's very good. But makes sense since they grew up with Greek (unlike his children). I agree with Adda that he indeed has an accent, which is a given since he left Greece when he was a year old and grew up abroad.

Caveat: not a native speaker myself :D would be keen to read impressions from our Greek forumers.

The looks between Anne-Marie/Pavlos and QMII/Frederik after Pavlos's speech were very lovely. Looked like Anne-Marie pointed out to Pavlos how impressed QMII looked and both QMII and Frederik gave him acknowledging nods.

"This is not the end father, you will always live in our thoughts and hearts" basic but still made me cry, losing a father is the worst.
.

Kudos to Pavlos for delivering the eulogy in both Greek and English. I must admit I found it terribly underwhelming and lacking in substance and content.

Absolute scenes outside of the Cathedral with the royal supporters singing the National Anthem!!!

Anne-Marie is saying goodbye to the love of her life since she was 16    My heart breaks especially for her, Queen Sofía, Princess Irene, yes ofc all the children but especially Nikolaos, whom I think we all agree should be Head of the House.

Καλό ταξίδι Μεγαλειότατε. Αιώνα σου η μνήμη!

What are they chanting?

The national anthem!!!!!!

Not even the most hardcore of all staunch monarchists could have imagined something like that. Wow!!! No wonder the government didn't want a State Funeral... The love for the royal family is real.

The four granddaughters seem to be carrying Constantine's insignia out of the church.

Wow. I mean that. What a reaction by the crowd! Amazing. And the cries of Pavlos! Pavlos! Pavlos!

The king of England was a crown bearer in king Constantine’s wedding being the groom second cousin and his first born child has king Constantine as one of his Godfathers but they send the sister of the monarch who is in her 70’s to repress the king and the prince of wales who is in his 40’s.
Sending the 72 years old princess who does more than double the engagements the 40 years old heir apparent do to represent them is just weird.

But again not that weird considering that non of them showed up to the funeral of their first cousin the Magrave of Baden last week while the king of Belgium attended.

It all seems a bit disorganised. The family has probably had to do much of the planning themselves. Proves how important having people doing the planning and logistics are.

Very moving images indeed. The family was able to organise a proper and impressive farewell to a King. Queen Anne Marie looks and behaves every inch the Queen. The Crown Prince clearly stating in the eulogy that the family is always ready to serve Greece. The new heir Prince Constantine-Alexios seems a bit overwhelmed by it all, as do many of the other grand children.

I was surprised to see the Belgian King and Queen and The Lux. Grand Duke and his sister Pss Margaretha of Liechtenstein. Nice that they are paying tribute to the late King. Not a surprise that the Grand Duchess was unable to attend I suppose.

Prince Michel was accompanied by his wife and his eldest daughter and grandson, it seems. I do not think his son-in-law and younger daughter the Duke and Duchess of Aosta were there, even though they are both related. Of the German houses Baden and Hannover were there. I believe most other families were absent, including many descending from Greek princesses. I suppose the church is not very large so choices had to be made, and many of them will be of an advanced age themselves of course.

Good to see that Prince Joachim was able to attend his uncles funeral afterall.

Wow, He's getting a proper funeral in spite of the government. People lining the streets of Athens and clapping as the hearse goes by.

Due to the exodus procession to the Metropolis of Athens and the motorcade headed for the Tatoi estate , EL.AS had instructed the police not to come into confrontation with the citizens who ask to pass to the former royal estates.

Hahahaha the Greek government is ...is...quite something... ISN'T IT? I can hear their panic.

It has always been that way. Even before QEII came to the throne… And they seems to be in no hurry to break that tradition…

Wonder if Mitsotakis is following on tv…. He should be ashamed of himself…

On Billed-Bladet's livestream, they explained Princess Alexandra (of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg) comes alone because her husband Count Michael is ill.

The crowd singing and applauding the coffin was very moving.

I was surprised to see only Alexandra and not her siblings. Nathalie probably has professional obligations, she can't just get out of, but I wonder why Gustav and Carina were absent. If I remember correctly, all the Greek cousins came to Prince Richard's funeral.

Disappointing display from William.
Indeed. And again (after the Baden funeral last week) being represented seems more like an afterthought. Lady Gabriella would have come anyways.

That photo of the crowds in the street is amazing. But you won't see that on the live stream I'm watching. They must be scared to show the amount of support for him. This way they can say later that not so many showed up in the streets.

He seemed very overwhelmed. When outside the church before entering he kept fiddling with something in his hand to stay calm.

Queen Noor of Jordan! I'm shook!
I swore I saw Princess Sarvath of Jordan but to add Queen Noor?! Impressive!

What a royal turnout!
Princess and Prince Hassan mostly represents the family when going for funerals and they themselves have friendships with reigning and non reigning royalty. Queen Noor has been a close friend for years to Queen Sofia.

He seemed very overwhelmed. When outside the church before entering he kept fiddling with something in his hand to stay calm.

Imagine growing up your whole life thinking that the monarchy will never come back and you will never have any "domestic" pressures as a Greek prince. He also had his grandfather, father and uncle taking all that attention and pressure of propping the Greek royal family as an institution. Well, today was his first day of actually being a Greek prince (if you get what I mean). The crowds made it very real for him... And I think he also realised that from now he will need to support his father to carry the institution, and one day carry it himself.

Overwhelming indeed!

But time for him to step up if he wants the Greek royal family as an institution to continue!
