Engagement of Princess Theodora of Greece and Matthew Kumar - November 16, 2018

Hurray! A Royal wedding I can look forward to.😉
Since Matthew has been around so long and (according to photos) on very good terms with other Royal family members I hope we will see a good turnout in Athens on September 28th.

I don't think the royal turn out will have much to do with Matthew - but Theodora is the cousin of both the king of Denmark and the king of Spain (as well as of the Fürst of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg), so a pretty large royal turn out may be expected.

With Christian off to Africa later this month. It will be interesting to see who gets picked to remain behind in Denmark during Theodora’s wedding. My guess would be Mary so both her aunts and cousin(s) can attend.

For Joachim it would be quite a long journey and he might have work obligations, so I’m not sure he can make it but to ask him to make the trip to Denmark so other family members can attend seems illogical.

I hope that members of the royal houses of Spain and Denmark will attend Theodora's wedding, however, I believe that Theodora is the member of the Greek royal family who has distanced herself the most from royalty, she has not cultivated friendships with members of royalty, which is why I have doubts about the rest of the guests......

She is still a cousin of the kings of Spain and Denmark and did attend the cousins-get-together in Denmark last year. So, I do expect her aunts and cousins to attend. I wouldn't be surprised if the Dutch king and queen are also in attendance as they've cultivated their relationship with some of the Greek royals over the last few years since Greece is the location of their holiday home.

She may be distant and detached but a wedding is a gathering of relatives most bride and groom had little association with. When the parents are royals connected to everyone in Europe, I hope it will be planned as a big family event.

I agree, it is probably Mary who stays back in Greece so Fred, Joachim, Margarethe and Benedikte can attend if they so choose to.

I don't recall Frederik or Joachim attending Philippos wedding a few years back.
We shall see.

Probably the invited will be the following

-The whole Greek royal family
-Queen Sofia of Spain plus Princess Irene
-Princess Benedikte or maybe her children
-any minor royal from other monarchies
-Queen Margrethe
-Crown Princess Margareta of Romania
-Crown Prince Alexander of Serbia

Infantas Cristina and Elena are definitely going to be there. Likewise, Princesses Nathalie and Alexandra, or at least one of them.

Why wouldn't her aunt and godmother Margrethe be invited?

I also expect Margarata of Romania, her father was Theodora's godfather and as he passed away, it seems likely that she represents him. Hopefully, also one of Queen Elizabeth's children (or grandchildren) will show up to represent her as she was also a godmother.

And of course, crown prince Alexander is expected as the other godparent that is still alive.

I'd like to see Prince William, the York sisters (or one of them), Peter or Zara attending...

Will King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia and King Frederik X and Queen Mary attend the wedding?

I doubt William will attend, he’s not close to her. I doubt Peter and Zara will attend either. The York girls could attend, but I highly doubt that either because Theodora is not in the same social circles as them.

I don’t think any minor royal from other monarchies or deposed royal families will be attending.

Yes, but Theodora is among the younger line of the family lives in America (Los Angeles) and is not really in the aristocratic, jet-setting upper class and royal circles like her brothers. Even Philippos who is in the above circles didn’t have that much of a grand attendance.

Any wedding preparations visible in Athens?

Princess Theodora and Prince Philippos were apparently personally invited to Princess Madeleine's wedding after they'd become friends while living in New York so maybe Madeleine and Chris will go.

The Greek Royal Family Facebook group has just published Princess Theodora's wedding invitation card.

Looking forward to this wedding!

It will be a bittersweet day for them all with Constantine missing. I’m assuming that Pavlos will escort Theodora down the aisle in place of his father.

Sasha Stamatis, the Greek journalist who published the invitation, also says that the Archbishop of Athens and all Greece, Ieronimos, will not officiate the wedding, because he is out of Athens at a conference at the time.

On the eve of the wedding, September 27, Princess Theodora and Matthew Kumar will host a welcome dinner with live music in honor of 250 special guests at the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens.

The couple's monogram was revealed:

Does anyone happen to know whether it was Queen Margrethe who designed the monogram? I believe she did so for the weddings of Prince Pavlos in 1995 and Princess Alexia in 1999.

I used to think that Princess Theodora's wedding was going to be simple, but after it was published that the pre-wedding party will have 250 guests, and that Queen Anna Maria is the one who is managing the wedding events, I now obviously have to change my mind, I think it will be a big wedding.

So thrilled for Princess Theodora and Matthew especially glad to hear Queen Anna Maria is so involved in the planning. This has been a long time coming.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark, Queen Sofia of Spain and Prince Alexander of Serbia were Princess Theodora's godparents at her christening (and Queen Elizabeth and King Michael of Romania). I believe that all three will be present. Queen Margrethe has been hospitalized due to a fall. She has already been discharged from hospital and is at her home, Frendensborg Palace, I believe she will attend the wedding.

Considering that she has been discharged with damage to the cervical vertebrae, forcing her to wear a neck brace for several months, and is having her left hand plastered due to a fracture, i strongly doubt a plane trip to Greece is on her mind right now…

I had thought that maybe she would attend with Benedikte and Frederik and Mary would stay to be Head of State - but now highly doubtful that QMII will make that trip given the circumstances. Would she be up to being Head of State for a couple of days by next week and Mary attend in her place? That is, if they were going to attend at all (the King and Queen).

If she can sign documents if needed so yes definitely… And as far as i know QMII is right-handed so i don’t think that would be an issue…

But i see now in the calendar that Mary has an engagement next Saturday, so maybe they have already planned that she should ”be the one at home”.

Theodora will have an evening wedding which almost surely means it will be very formal.😋

She and Matthew have waited a long time for this day so I am very happy to see them pull out the stops.
