The whole story of this woman is memorable; it is one --- maybe the only one in this era --- of how the hereditary principle allows folks to recapitulate in their minds how history of a country can be like the history of a person and a family.
Notably: her parents had no reason to think their first daughter was going to anything but a well-born debutante till OMG! the uncle abdicated and Pa becomes George VIth, a guy with a terrible stammer. I figure the mother, "Queen Mother Elizabeth" got real busy training this kid about DUTY, and she was a willing and able student. Cosseted, protected, and stage-managed Yes, but that bit about changing the spark plugs in WWII and the pledge I think about time of marriage to always work for the people always seemed both heartfelt and brilliant. She weathered a lot with those kids, and though Philip was an old-fashioned British racist and sometimes blowhard he was also a real participant in WWII, an environmentalist, and support for her. I figured she would slide down real quick after his death. But look, she even stood up and handled the "kiss the ring" deal with Truss before fading out. Whether we "see her like again" or abolish the monarchy, and maybe a curse to her children, aides, whatever, I think she gets huge credit for DUTY....
