Crown Princely Family Visit to the Faeroe Islands: August 23-26, 2018

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Let's talk a little about the national costumes they are wearing today. - Most of the day, because they won't have time to change!

Judging from the style, I'd say it dates back from the early 1700's.
Men and women wear shoes with silver buckles.
The buttons of the men's outfit are made from silver, and such buttons are often presented as a baptism or confirmation gift.

Boys often wear wooden-shoes.

The colors are seemingly a matter of taste and in contrast to Greenland and Denmark apparently not an indication of where you are from and your status (Greenland) or a specific regional outfit (Denmark).

The outfits are expensive!
15-20.000 DKK = 1.800+ £ or 2.000+ € or 2.300+ $

There is a lot of needlework involved, M Payton.

ADDED: The outfits are a present from the Faeroese municipalities.

Here is a short video of a traditional Faeroese chain-dance:

The costumes are quite beautiful, eh?

Some of the songs and sagas dates back to events happening more than a 1.000 years ago, using the expressions and words of the sagas that were written down around 1200 and 1300's.

Here is such a saga (10 minutes) with English subtitles. It's almost hypnotic!
It's about an event in the 900's.
And you'll have plenty of time to look at the costumes...
And listen to what is basically a Viking dialect.

QMII who at least understand a good deal of Faeroese, although she isn't good at conversing in the language, usually sing along with the chorus.

More info on the traditional outfits. All gifts from the Faroe Islands. From the DRF instagram...

:previous:First a huge Thank you to all who make this possible for us here to read and view as I am getting a tour of the Islands here myself.....

Yes Muhler, that last picture is showing a very dignified crown prince and future king doing his work for the people. You can not help but love a man in that type of hat now can you...so very handsome he is.

I am so loving all the pictures and the videos, I actually watched the ring dance, all 9 minutes of it and glad it showed the words to the song, imagine dancing like that for 9 minutes or more........my feet would not handle it today.

Does anyone know the weather there today as I like those capes the ladies are wearing and that big silver buckle on Mary's cape is quite nice.

Now I will just sit back with my tea and cookie and wait for more pictures and videos here......

Here's an additional gallery from today:

The bouquet Mary was presented consists of dried salmon skin. - That may explain why Josephine made her brother smell it. ?

They were asked about the reception, Mary responded that they had been given a warm reception.
Christian was asked how it was to wear his outfit and replied that it was fine. It wasn't cumbersome to wear and it kept him warm, which was fine...

The temperature, not counting the wind chill factor, was 11 degrees C = 51.8 F.

And to me it looked like the girls were on occasion a little cold.

ADDED:
A heartwarming story about Christian, Mary and a slightly retarded woman:
https://www.bt.dk/royale/20-aarige-sunnrid-fik-kram-af-mary-hun-har-ventet-i-flere-maaneder

20 year old Sunnrið Johnsen also has problems seeing, so she and her helper had taken up position along the route the family was going through Thorshavn. She has been reading about the CP-Couple for weeks!
Christian went over and shook her hand, to her great delight, followed by Mary who gave Sunnrið Johnsen a hug - and now there is one seriously happy woman in Thorshavn today!

ADDED:
Seems like Christian is quietly being trained for his future role. While his siblings went back to Dannebrog (to hopefully some warm cocoa.) Christian went with his dad when the CP-Couple split up:
https://www.billedbladet.dk/kongelige/danmark/prins-christian-fik-alenetid-med-far
The two of them visited a combined education facility, high school, technical school and trade school.

And here is a video summary from BB of todays events. I may return to that later, evening coffee is waiting.
https://www.billedbladet.dk/kongeli...ry-frederik-og-boernenes-festlige-ankomst-til

There has been some dissatisfaction, with some justification IMO, that the DRF has had a tendency to overlook the Faeroe Islands, especially in the light of the frequent visits to Greenland.
- To that you could add that the Faeroese independent movement has been pretty vocal in not being particularly welcoming...

:previous: Yes, and Christian seem very attentive.

I think they have learned from Frederik's own experiences. He really only started on-the-job training as a royal and in particular as a crown prince when he was around 18. - On top of that he was very shy and uncomfortable in the public light.

Christian who seems very confident and extrovert has been on the job earlier, and judging from the way he is paying attention to what his dad is doing, he is also being instructed and his role of his family is very likely been both explained and discussed.
I think that's a sound approach. Because they might just as well get used to the attention - and their future role. And learn it accompanied by his parents.

There is a great experiment going on these years in the European RF's.
Some opt for a gradual training and public exposure as they grow up, and with them occasionally having some sort of active role prior to them turning 10. - Without being in the limelight constantly though. - The middle approach.
Others have opted for bringing their children along from basically day one, so that their children are a lot in the public light. - The full glare approach.
And others have opted for shielding their children as much as possible and only bringing them on for major events - and without them having a role of their own. - The shielded approach.

It will be interesting to see which approach works best - with reservations in regards to the individual traditional roles of the royals in each monarchy, and not least the personalities of the children.

I see Frederik is being interviewed by Faeroese TV - before he has had time to greet his hosts. Leaving them standing there. - Which I think is bad form. But perhaps I'm old fashioned.

I see a high status, but not too high status, rural family entering their large family farm anno perhaps 1710? Perhaps coming home from church.

- Except perhaps for the electric lamp over the door and the tie Frederik is wearing, but who worries about anachronisms when time-traveling? ?

I notice there are subtle differences between the dresses worn by Isabella and Josephine, especially in regards to the silver clasp (I think it is) in the front. It's a beautiful shawl Josephine is wearing BTW.

Her dress is a little bit too long. Or perhaps rather she is not used to that long dresses.
Notice later on how Christian warms Josephine's hand between his.

Quite cute how the Australian outlet thought the family travelled on the Dannebrog from Fenmark to the Islands and started waving when finally reaching them :D

Mary and Frederik are on the mark on how to expose Christian to his eventual role. Society as a whole has changed since Frederik was Christian's age - the age of the Internet meant that Mary and Frederik couldn't hide Christian away like the European RFs did in yester years.

I am quite impressed how the Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch and Belgian RFs have modernised with their Royal practices. It is nice to see how the current and previous CP and Regent couples in each of those kingdoms have made sure their children are grounded and encourage them to seek another profession before committing fully to Royal life.

I am loving the photos from this tour - probably one of my favourite tours that Mary and Frederik have undertaken.

Quite cute how the Australian outlet thought the family travelled on the Dannebrog from Fenmark to the Islands and started waving when finally reaching them :D

Can't blame them. I get confused sometime too. If I didn't follow the family closely enough I would think that they travelled on Dannebrog all the way:ROFLMAO:

The photos and videos from the tour so far have been fantastic! I loved seeing the family in the Faroese dress.

I’m of the opinion that the skills needed for this sort of tour are probably the hardest needed for royal life. How to carry yourself in a crowd, how to interact naturally with strangers, how to make spontaneous comments to officials, the press or ordinary people without sounding either too rehearsed or overly familiar. And especially how to do it all multiple times, even when you’re tired, in a bad humour, feeling awkward, would rather be home watching Netflix, etc. Basically learning the “we are never tired, and we all love hospitals” skill set.

For the majority of people, I also think these skills are no different from many other things in that the earlier you start learning them the easier you pick them up.

That being said, I think Mary and Frederik also got very lucky with Christian, who has always seemed like an easy going, mature and confident boy.

What delightful pictures and videos from such a lovely, genuine family. I think Josephine lips were blue at one point and she and Vincent looked tired after a while. Both Isabella and Christian behave in such a dignified yet approachable manner, so unusual for that age. I wonder why Mary didn’t have a cap? And she and Frederick were certainly trying hard to do the song and dance at the gala, where do,they get their energy?

The live coverage from BB starts at 09.50. - Their link seems to be the most reliable.

When Frederik yesterday gave a speech in return to the speech of the Faeroese chairman of the Parliament, the Lagmand (- the Law-Man) he obviously improvised a few words about his children.
Saying that the truth come out of the mouths of children he told that their children felt well here and felt it was easy connecting with the Faeroese.

At the gala-dinner last night M&F were served nine local specialties:
That included chips made from dried fish (probably quite healthy!)
Smoked eggs from cods.
Cod-chips and lam.
More cod.
Salted fish with clams.
Celery with fat from intestines and cheese.
Lamb-roll with mushrooms.
Seaweed and blueberries.
A special Faeroese cake.

Interesting with the toastmaster! Are they all drinking from the same horns? Good M&F were served first!
I think it's pretty safe to say that those dancing constitute very much the 1% who's who of the Faeroe Islands.

And it's not all old style music and singing, here is a modern interpretation of a classic saga, Long Snake (the name of a Viking warship, and incidentally song about in the long video about chain dance I posted earlier:

ADDED:

Live link from BB now

https://www.billedbladet.dk/kongeli...v-fra-kronprinsfamiliens-ankomst-til-klaksvik

(The whole arrival is now online as a 28 min video. Use the link above.)

Running commentaries in this post.

----------------------

This morning from Klaksvik, the second largest town on the islands.

---------------------

The family are dressed in the local costumes today again.

-----------------

11 degrees C, just as cold or warm as yesterday.

-------------------

Seems like Isabella and Josephine have opted not to wear their bonnets today. Mary pulled her cape closer, it's chilly!

--------------------

I see the crew of Dannebrog today are wearing jackets.

-----------

The last time Christian was here, was in his mother's belly and that was mentioned in a speech yesterday. At that moment the BB photographer took a pic of Christian pointing towards his mother's belly.

--------------

The sentry is in place and the flowergirl is tripping impatiently.

------------------

Josephine still isn't comfortable with her long skirts ad the phalarope.

---------------

Looks like Vincent is in the stay close to dad/admire dad age.

------------------

Neat detail that the mayor address the children in his welcoming speech and welcoming them personally and praising for how good they look in the national suits. - He address them with formal you BTW. Normally children, also royal, are addressed with informal you.

----------------------

The family is greeting the onlookers. And the mayors daughter aka the flowergirl don't want to miss anything! Josephine is a little shy.

---------------

That's it. The show is over for now. - There will be photos from the scenery later today.
Now over to our newsdiggers.
