The Prince, Patron of the @WelshRugbyUnion, will attend the Wales v Argentina match on Saturday.

The Prince of Wales has become Patron of the Football Association (instead of President as before), it was announced today, July 24:


We're pleased to announce that His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, is to become Patron of the FA.
The patronage was previously held by Queen Elizabeth II and, following her passing, the Royal Household has undertaken a major review of Royal Patronages and charity Presidencies.
His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, has held the position of President at the FA since 2006, and a member of the Royal Family has provided additional support to the organisation’s Patron in this role since 1939.
Given the active role within the FA of His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, the position of President will not be filled at this time.

Great news. I have no doubt William will do a great job being Royal Patrol of the FA. This is a sport that he cares passionately about, as is evident from his reactions at various games.

I'm not quite sure what difference this makes. Hopefully William will still be presenting the Cup and attending England matches. It says "a more scaled back role", but presumably he hasn't been making decisions about the use of VAR or whether or not there should be replays in the early rounds of the Cup :) .

I was wondering the same. What is the difference between being President and Patron? Wasn’t Catherine president of Wimbledon before she was patron?
 
I, too, was wondering if this meant a scaled back role in the FA, but that doesn't appear to be the case. The end of the statement says the FA won't be filling the role of President at this time "[g]iven the active role within the FA of His Royal Highness." So it sounds like his shift from President to Patron won't really change his role until such time that he needs to become less active with the FA, in which case he'll likely remain Patron but a new President will be brought on.

The Football Association could also be in the process of restructuring their organization such that there's a firm process for electing/appointing a president, along with expectations of their role within the organization that may have more or less responsibilities than it had under HRH The Prince of Wales. This way, if the FA find another president, it will be a smoother transition from HRH The Prince of Wales.
