Queen Margrethe: Work as an Artist and Scenographer

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I just watched Ehrengard on Netflix. It is charming and funny. Afterwards there is an hour long behind the scenes film which has many interviews with Queen Margarethe. Shows her working on and explaining how she creates her decoupages.

I really enjoyed watching the Making Of documentary which made me even more impressed than I was already of QM’s talents and intellect. Am looking forward to watching the movie sometime this weekend. Apart from anything else it promises to be a real visual feast thanks to Her Majesty’s talent.

The Palace has shared some photos of Queen Margrethe at her studio, quoting her:

"When, in the late 1970s, I glued my first découpages to a square paper basket in sad and tired pine, I did not dream that these clippings, which were made purely for fun, would one day be used in serious feature films such as Ehrengard".

Tomorrow Queen Margrethe will attend the opening of an exhibition with a selection her decoupage, costumes and costume sketches for the current film adaptation of "Ehrengard".

I just started watching Ehrengard and I am amazed at the artistic talents of the Queen. Wow!

In one of the scenes, the home where the expectant couple hides away looks exactly like Graasten! Does anyone know if the Queen gave permission for the crew to film there? Or is it a case of old Danish palaces looking alike?

Gråsten, Marselisborg and Fredensborg are in roughly the same style, but there are around 1.200 manors, manor houses and large medieval estates in DK and they are in widely different styles, so you can easily find something that looks like Gråsten, but you can also find one that looks like a medieval (Baltic style castle - build in red bricks) castle.

Here is a quick sample:

To make a long answer short: No. Exterior shots of Rosenbad were filmed at Gammel Holtegård Manor House.

Gammel Holtegård was designed by Danish Baroque-architect Lauritz de Thurah (who has also designed the Hermitage Hunting Lodge and Roskilde Palace).

The current "form" of Gråsten, on the other hand, was designed by Rococo-architect Johann Gottfried Rosenberg (who is also believed to have designed Augustenborg Palace) after it burned down in 1757.

While not built by the same architect or in the same architectural style, they were built in the same years (Gammel Holtegård in 1756-57 and Gråsten was rebuilt in 1759) and Rococo is obviously an evolution of the Baroque movement so similarities are palpable.

Additionally, I don't think Rosenberg really mastered the Rococo-style as impeccably as Denmark's leading Rococo-architect Nicolai Eigtved (the architect of Amalienborg, Sophienberg Castle and the Prince's Mansion among numerous works – and also Lauritz de Thurah's biggest rival! The drama! :D). At least I think there's a notable difference in Rosenberg and Eigtved's works (though Rosenberg did work under Eigtved's supervision on a number of buildings within the Copenhagen-district of Frederiksstaden).

All locations used for Ehrengard:

– Denmark: Selsø Manor House, Turebyholm Manor House, Gammel Holtegård Manor House, Ledreborg Castle, Frederiksborg Palace Church, Lejre Land of Legends and Det Ny Teater.

– Sweden: Torup Castle, Malmö City Hall, Malmö City and Kronovall Castle.

– The Czech Republic: Český Krumlov Castle and Buchlovice Castle.

Here are some pics of Gammel Holtegård.
It does look remarkably like both Gråsten and Fredensborg.

It's located in one of the more affluent suburbs of Copenhagen, Gammel Holte. Old money!
It's a place where people don't open their mouths when they talk, presumably for fear of getting a wayward golf-ball in the mouth. (They do actually have a very distinct accent.)
It's also a place where one's butler simply cannot be seen driving anything less than a Tesla and your au-pair walking around in lauboutin is naturally a must.
When one lives in Gammel Holte, one does not need to flaunt one's money. Money is simply something one has, and has had for generations. So when one go for a stroll in the neighborhood carrying one's little four-legged Rodin in the hand, one dress modestly in a simple Prada. I mean there is no need to don one of one's day-to-day Alexander McQueen's just to walk the dog, what? That would be so pretentious.
One's hobby is tennis-trainers and collecting Apple stocks. In ascending order - according to their serial numbers.

Interesting......

Shame on whoever decided that a work by Yuri Possokhov should be performed in Danmark. Shame on the DRF advisers for not knowing better.

Can you explain? I did a quick search and can’t figure out the issue.

Can you explain? I did a quick search and can’t figure out the issue.

Upon the invasion, many choreographers who spoke out against the war and asked that the Bolshoi Ballet stop performing their works, were ignored. Works kept being performed against their creator's wish, sometimes ballets were performed and the programs didn't even specify who the choreographer was.

Possokhov was a principal at the Royal Danish Ballet, but had been working primarily at San Francisco Ballet for years, his first big hit (and I mean HIT) as a choreographer was A Hero of Our Time, created for the Bolshoi.

Despite the fact that choreographers like Jean-Christophe Maillot and Alexei Ratmansky (also a former principal at the Royal Danish Ballet) were abused by the Bolshoi adminstration, and the director of A Hero of Our Time, Kirill Serebrennikov, was placed by the regime under house arrest, Possokhov went on to create The Seagull for the Bolshoi, this time with Aleksandr Molochnikov as director, Molochnikov had to flee the country after voicing his opposition to the invasion. Possokhov was perfectly willing to have the names of his collaborators deleted from his ballets.

Possokhov is now producing a new Queen of Spades for the Bolshoi. The company has just recently FINALLY dropped A Hero of Our Time because Serebennikov kept complaining.

Apart from Joffrey Ballet performing his Anna Karenina, I'm not aware of any new work he has done for Western companies. SFB hasn't commissioned anything new this season.

The Award for the most Idiotic Question a Journalist has asked Queen Margrethe in 2023, is about to be presented.

(Drummroll. )

https://www.bt.dk/samfund/dronningen-reagerer-paa-matthew-perrys-doed

In this video QMII is asked about her work as a scenographer, and after having answered a questions about presents to Christian we come to the reason why the award is being presented.
(I'll simplify the question, but QMII's answer is in full translation.=
at 00:13 - "Are there other (questions)?" (We Danes have a tendency not to finish sentences...)

A reporter appears to raise her hand or whatever.

QMII: "Yes, is it about the performance?
Well, that would be more appropriate, I think." QMII is winking.

Q: Well, it isn't actually. But she'll try anyway, because it might be that QMII has an opinion about it. For the last few days the death of Matthew Perry has taken up a lot of space. (*) - Has that affected You?

QMII: "I've never seen anything of it." (Friends). (**)

- QMII must have been in a good mood. If her back had been killing her, I'd suspect she'd have split the reporter in two.

(*) In some segments of the press! If you glance DM for example you'd be forgiven for thinking that no greater tragedy had happened on this planet for years. Personally I'd be just as blank had I been asked the same question. Knew his name but that's about it.

(**) Much prefer Couplings. It is orders of magnitudes more funny than Friends.

- At least the reporter addressed QMII correct and respectfully, many journalists could learn from that!

Well Muhler idiotic question or not you'd think some tact and sensitivity could have been exhibited. Instead of that snarky reply to asking about the death of someone she just could have simply said I not familiar with Mr. Perry but my condolences to his family and moved on. You would think someone with over 5 decades of soft diplomacy experience would have handled that "idiotic" question better. Maybe it was asked given her recent Hollywood type experience and given the fact he was only 54 years old, the same age as her sons.

And wow she seems seems to have so much time for her side interests what with Netflix and now this yearly ballet. I guess for her using her official title for these types of things is just fine. And interesting you only knew his name yet can proclaim this other show much funnier than Friends. Anywho......

So tired of a pass always.....never mind. Whatever. And go ahead, I'm sure I'll get all the snarky replies and passive aggressive insults when I dare share my opinions. And this post is all I'll say on the subject...but sorry had to respond here.

To the best of my ability I don't think QMII's response was in any way snarky.

And as for myself: There are many series I'm more or less familiar with and even with series I have followed and enjoyed I would at best be able to remember the names of half the main actors.
I have seen a few episodes of Friends and to be honest I found the humor pretty toothless and the characters not quirky enough to be that likable, hence why I prefer the British variant: Couplings.

Anyway, it is my opinion that if one look for faults, one will inevitably find them.

QMII sure has her faults and it's no secret that I'd prefer for her to abdicate while M&F are still in their prime, that has been discussed often here.
However, she is still my Queen and I respect her because she has earned that respect. That does not mean she is above reproach, so when she IMO makes mistakes I will say so, and I believe I have.

Finally, your opinion about QMII might fall on less dry ground here, so to speak, if it was more nuanced. As it is, it has IMO evolved into a campaign, and I will not take part in that.
People are skipping your posts because they are considered too one-sided and unuanced not because of personal dislike or because you have an opinion that may differ from the mainstream here - and that's a pity.

Well Muhler all I will say is that I will respectfully disagree on what we consider snark and what I consider someone of her status and as you say earned respect should handle such out of left field questions. But that's just me and my apparent campaign. I am sure that if let's say Frederik had responded in the same manner he would be afforded the same berth on the snark scale.

As for the rest of your post...touche. Goodbye. Thank goodness no one will have to deal.with me much longer. I'm sure many more people than just rage ones on this forum will be glad to hear that. For now I will just lurk and do as other do and skip things I don't like. I just hope no one ever responds in the same when if asked about me.

Back to the silence i promised i would keep and as I see if welcome here. I won't be a nuisance on here. So please don't waste time hitting the report button.

Can't be surprised there are less commissions for Possokhov from the San Francisco Ballet given the condemnation the invasion has drawn from the West

That was an idiotic question! I didn't find her response "snarky," either. If she has no idea who the guy was, she's on much safer ground not answering than showing sympathy to someone who -- for all she knows -- could be a total creep who represents something that doesn't merit her condolences.

Some days it must be a total PITA to be the queen.

I agree, it was a weird question and a sincere answer.

Congrats to the Queen. I wonder if that could be her first public appearance after abdication...
