Why Are The Windsors More Popular Than Other Royal Families?

And IMHO, exactly for those reason these other families seem much "closer" to us, so called "normal people".:);)

Royals are not supposed to be "normal people". Once they stop behaving as royalty, i.e. once they become too "close to us", people will get rid of them. Why would anyone pay for a family that is just like any other family in the country? They need an aura of regality and formality. Once you get to address your king as "bro", the monarchy will make no sense and will get abolished. Do you really think it's OK for royals to date topless models, marry people associated with drug lords, talk to angels, have [secret] extramarital children, etc?

British royals are not flawless but they are a bit more regal than average European royals. Anyway, I'm glad I made you laugh :D

Thw only reason they have more noteriety is because here in the States, they are the only ones known. Charles married his long time mistress, with whom has has carried on a relationship with, even when they were both married, a stewp below marry a personal trainer. Andrew dated a porn star and they squelch anything they can get there hands on. There have been plenty of extramartital children over the years. Camilla just may be a decendant of one.

And that will happen sometime; maybe not during our lifetime, but it will happen.

She is, assuming you mean Charles II's illegitimate children. So is Sarah and so was Diana. If you meant Alice Keppel's line, it is highly unlikely Sonia was Edward VII's daughter. Although even if she were, Charles and Camilla would hardly be related closer than, say, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip or King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.

"More regal than the average European Royals"?? You made me laugh too !

CP Haakon of Norway wed an unwed mother/former party girl but there are no recordings of him wistfully musing about the possibility of reincarnating as the feminine hygiene product of his married mistress, or wishing he could live inside her knickers.

CP Victoria of Sweden is now the happy wife of her former trainer but she's never been seen dressed up like a Nazi for fun, nor has she been photographed cavorting stark naked and possibly drunk in a Las Vegas hotel room with a bunch of seedy strangers.

In fact, with the exception of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Cornwall I now know what each of the senior members of this very "regal" family looks like naked. Unfortunately.

I certainly cannot say the same thing for Spain,Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Luxembourg or even Sweden for that matter.

The major reason for the Windsor popularity, at least here in the States, is that much like the Monaco Grimaldis they have so successfully blurred the line between Royalty and reality TV. The public embraces them because with a few exceptions, their behavour reflects that of the general public, which makes great tabloid material in our celebrity obsessed culture.

When HM and the Duke of Edinburgh are no longer on the scene, any semblance of mystique with the BRF will be a thing of the past-just like Monaco when Rainier III died.

I suspect that why you know all that is the very fact that the BRF rates on the international stage while the other royal families don't.

Outside of their own nations, and maybe a neighbouring country or two, they don't sell.

e.g. here in Australia the only non-British royal who would sell anything in the press is Mary, but then she is an Aussie underneath her Danish royal titles.

The other royals are non-entities on the world stage while the press knows that a picture of Harry in a Nazi uniform will sell and sell and sell. I was in China at the time and the local papers there had him on the front page - now can you see the Chinese press putting anything about Victoria on their front page - I can't - simply because Sweden is a minor power while Britain has a history around the world for good and bad and so its royal family is well known.

My point IluvBertie...is not the fact that they are well known and reported on. I have already agreed that they indeed are. It's why they are so well covered and I still say it's at least partly because of the notoriety and scandalous publicity they have attracted in the last 30 or so years.

And the idea that the Windors rate publicity because they are somehow ""more regal" than their counterparts on the Continent just makes me howl

I didn't even bother going into the Duke of York's problems in the last couple of years...BFF's with a convicted pedophile?? Really??

Thank you for your great comments Moonmaiden23! I don't know whether to laugh or cry at some remarks (here and in the "Why Windsors don't go to royal weddings" thread) about the BRF being superior to others, being more regal, having bluer blood... Simply ridiculous IMO!

No, but her Grandpa Sommerlath has - though not for fun. He was an actual Nazi.

nor has she been photographed cavorting stark naked and possibly drunk in a Las Vegas hotel room with a bunch of seedy strangers.

No, but her Papa was - to say the least (let alone admittedly whoring around and using the state police to cover up his visits to mafia-run strip clubs), and that's even after she was born.

You see, one can always find something. Unfortunatly, I do have to agree that once the Queen is gone, the British royal family will lose the little mystique and solemnity they have left.

I get a little testy about that too.

If a politician and his wife behaved like the Windsors he would have been driven from office, but for some reason the Windsors get some sort of pass.

Perhaps it's because the BRF has more headlines mainly because they have such a much more fascinating history and one that has made a significant international impact. Not since Rome has a country so dominated the world and it's cultural perspectives. So go figure, the Windsors are more prominent in terms of press coverage and general attention.

But, it does not mean that they are classy, better educated, or more intelligent or hardworking, quite the opposite really. The princes on the Continent are a lot more educated, have more practical degrees, and speak multiple languages while the BRF, current generation of newer royals, are quite the opposite.

Even teh Duchess of Cambridge has little by way of career and her education isn't that remarkable. A history of art degree can be used, but she has not used it at all and I wonder just how much time she spent in the library, when she wasn't jet setting or shopping or bar/club hopping. But for some reason she is supposed ot be 'better' than the other Crown Princesses just because she is married to Prince William, Heir to the British throne? Or William is supposed to be better, despite the fact that he doesn't speak multiple languages and doesn't have a degree in anything relevant to his future position?

In regards to being popular, they are popular like celebrities, for dressing well and being good at PR/stunts/fashionable causes, that's it. I don't think that can last long though since seems the public is getting fed up.

Prince Philip's family members have been pictured with Nazi SS.

The BRF are more popular because of the wide rule of so much of the planet for so long. I agree with others, once Her Majesty and The DOE pass some of the luster will fade. Though I think they will still remain the most public royal family because they have the best PR machine of any royal family. They do tradition and pomp better than anyone royal family on the planet IMO. We will have to see how we view the royal family once Will and Kate take the throne. I'm not getting the vibe that they respect the tradtions as much as QE2 and Prince Charles. IMO Charles will make a fine king IMO. The jury is still out on Wiliam. I always get the feeling that he'd much rather have a life like the Peter and Zara.

The other side of the question of popularity is do the other royal houses crave the level attention that the BRF has?

And yet it is always the fans and followers of continental royals who complain on these threads about the BRF
It has been stated before but no one in the UK cares or follows these royals. certainly not the press or media.

It must be an issue with Europe because the threads are always one-sided, with the British saying for the most part, we don't care or follow the continent and the continent complaining the BRF doesn't show them enough 'respect'

Prince Philip was a Nazi as were all of his sisters' husbands.

Phillip's sisterS married minor German royals, who were indeed memberS of the Nazi party. As a result , they were barred from attending attending Elizabeth and Phillip's wedding. Phillip, however, was never a member of the Nazi party.

'The Windsors' are a multitude of people - You cannot pitch them against a single person and their doings. If you pitch a politician against The Queen - I'm save to bet, The Queen comes out on top  She has never placed a foot wrong in her life.

Politicians get into the limelight when they are already grown up - so every folly in youth (say before 30) hast to be taken out of the equilibrium; having mist the opportunity to make themselves ridiculous :whistling:

And having mistresses or divorcing is not a privilege of the royal family, apart from 70% of all marriages also politicians suffer divorces ..

Where does it state in the article you linked , he was a member of the Hitler Youth?

I think you better retract your statement that the Duke of Edinburgh was a former Nazi

Seems libellous to me

Very true.
A relatively small proportion of people even know who the continental royals are. (I remember when Prince Friso was injured and it made the papers- my colleagues at work all thought he was British and were wondering why they hadn't heard of him before! When I told them he was Dutch, they lost interest).

But everyone knows the BRF.

All you have to do is go to another forum or Google to know how the Monaco bunch, Juan Carlos, Frederick, Letizia look like naked, full frontal in the case of the males.

All you have to do with Spain is Google Juan Carlos and his older brother
Sweden, Carl Gustaf and his "alleged" social circle and Silvia father being a Nazi.

All these would sell big in the media, if the public outside of their country care about them

I don't know why she said if a politician has done what a BRF has done they would be out of office, maybe on America. In Europe especially in France they would get a pat on the back

Perhaps it's time to take a couple of deep breaths. :)

As far as I can see the topic is why the Windsors are more popular (or rather more well known) than other royal families.
Don't let it degenerate into a "my favorite royal family is better than your favorite royal family" slogging match.

Easy now, it's Christmas. :xmasbell:

I agree with Muhler. I have no pony in this race. I root for them all. The BRF are more popular than the rest because they once ruled most of the planet and English is the native language IMO. They put on the best pomp in the world.

I'm save to bet, The Queen comes out on top  She has never placed a foot wrong in her life...
IMO she definitely placed her foot wrong at the time of Diana's death and showed a remarkable lack of regalness/nobility (unless of course you understand "regalness" as "knowing the etiquette"). I also saw her once making a face and a noise when she was served the wrong kind of coffee during a state visit in Germany, anyone else (e.g. Kate) would have been accused of bad manners.

The BRF is better known (not more popular, at least in continental Europe) than other royal houses because of the British Empire/English-speaking-world and because of an endless row of scandals and entertaining stories ever since gossip mags were published (abdication, adultery, divorces, death in a tunnel and so on). Definitely not because they are more regal than others.

All Royal Houses have had their share of scandal. And all Royal Houses do their best in terms of "good works".

It's not a competition.

One point though - coupling "death in a tunnel" with the words "scandal and enteraining stories - is, IMO, wrong. But its Christmas time and I am assuming its a mistake.

^^She didn't do anything wrong at the time of Diana's death, a family members died and the BRF did not have to go around to comfort the public.

The way the public and the media reacted and the way those boys (William and Harry) had to be parade around to comfort the public was disgusting

When her grandchildren lost their mother - she stayed with them to comfort Harry & William - as was her duty as a grandmother. Mybe in the eyes of the crazy public who lost an icon (NOT a mother) she should have cared about the public not her grandsons ... - I can't follow there to be honest!

And making a face at a wrong coffee might by 'peculiar' but I wouldn't count it as 'putting a foot wrong' ...

And to 'running away from once duty', divorces, death by tragic occurrences, adultery etc. I'm sure you find in your family as much of that, as I do in mine. :whistling:

Bow.

Some members here feel like the Grimaldi's are the laughing stock of the Royals but let's be real here; the Windsors and their scandals make the Kardashians look boring.

^How? Monaco and Britain: Affairs, Divorce and Nudity. The only difference are the illegitimate children (in this century)

My goodness, if you really don't care about the BRF than why all the comments?

The continent can do whatever it is they do and the British will get on with our lives

Again it is always a one-sided thread, Europe whines about not getting enough respect and that HM 'only' sends Sophie and Edward to weddings.

More than most European countries deserve, IMO

And I just want to add, it seems to be the indifference factor that bothers fans of continental royals.
Be proud of your royals be all means but don't expect anyone outside of Europe to really care.
