When Harry met Chelsy
At first the bubbly and boisterous Ms Davy, daughter of a Zimbabwean millionaire, seemed no more than a dizzy blonde with whom he would party and from whom he would part. But in the three years since they met in Cape Town, during Harry's gap year, their relationship has not only endured but has positively flourished.
Yes, she too likes a party. She too likes the latest nightspots. Neither is she averse to copious amounts of Harry's beloved cocktails or his Marlboro cigarettes. But Royal insiders insist there is much more to the relationship than a frenetic social whirl. And it has been 21-year-old Chelsy's influence, they say, that has begun to tame the younger Prince.
''There is no doubt about it, there is a very, very strong bond between them,'' says one former Royal aide. ''And to understand it you have to look at the background. When his mother died Harry felt dreadfully emotionally exposed. In the years that followed he felt very keenly that ''second son'' syndrome. He has always been that little bit forgotten.
''The Prince of Wales is an extremely loving father but he failed to notice as swiftly as Princess Diana would have that Harry needed an extra dose of attention. Prince William's future was mapped out from the off. And while he was not an outstanding student, his academic results were reasonably good. Harry had to work hard for below-average results. In every way he has felt in his older brother's shadow.
''Then he found Chelsy. Someone on whom he could lavish open affection. And, more importantly, who could fulfil that role for him. They are nuts about each other. And that anger that comes out, with a few drinks? Bottled up anger over his mother's death. It is so very understandable.''
