How is Rwanda a member of the Commonwealth when it is French-speaking and an originally German and then a Belgian colony? It is as odd as Mozambique (a Portuguese-speaking country and a former Portuguese colony) also being in the Commonwealth.


Curiously, Rwanda is also in the OIF (la Francophonie) as Mozambique is also in the CPLP (a Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa).

Rwanda joined the Commonwealth in 2009 despite not having any colonial ties to Britain.

The Commonwealth is not restricted to only countries that were part of the old British Empire. Rwanda has many contacts with Commonwealth countries and so asked to join and the Commonwealth nations voted in favour of that expansion.

I have no idea what the Commonwealth does as such - other than allows the Aussies to win most of the medals at the Commonwealth Games every 4th year. That is about the only time that the Commonwealth is mentioned for most people in Australia. It is rather a meaningless association of nations from my perspective, especially now that the link via being former British colonies is no longer a requirement.

We don't teach kids about it in our History lessons (we hardly teach any British/European history and when we do it is Britain/Europe evil to native peoples) so it really is something that the governments find useful - probably because there is an excuse for the PM to travel to exotic countries every few years.

Wow! As far as I know, most British PMs who are seeking an exotic trip typically just go on holiday to the exotic location of their choice, without having to spend days in meetings with other heads of government.

So if everything you say is true about the Commonwealth, what is the fuss all about The Queen and her achievements during her reign, Commonwealth of Heads meetings etc. ...?!
And how could it mean something to Australians, if they are not taught about it? Very unthinkable here in europe if kids and young people were not taught about the European Union! It is virtually something about our daily life!
If most Aussies don´t care about the Commonwealth, they should leave. But so far, as far as I know, they always decided otherwise...
Another question is, if people in other C countries see it that negative as you do...?!
 
Why such a sparse gathering of royals at the Commonwealth Day Service? Even though Harry and Andrew are no longer part of the "official" happenings ... where was Anne, Edward, the two other Kents, the Gloucesters?
 
The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were going to attend but the Duke has contracted Covid. Best wishes to him for a swift recovery.

Apart from the fact that the Gloucester's were isolating as Richard had tested positive, I query the need for many members of the family to be present at such events. In my view the presence of four senior royals (C&C, W&C) is plenty to demonstrate the commitment of the BRF, at the highest levels, to the Commonwealth.
 
We have also since learnt that Edward was enroute to Kenya for a Jubilee related engagement, and hence missed the Commonwealth Day service.
 
And the Duke of Kent attended a Commonwealth Day Service in Bristol Cathedral on Monday 14th, before attending several other engagements in the region.
 
Re the discussions on William and Kate’s tour of the Caribbean about Jamaica no longer having the British monarch as HOS, there has to be a referendum held in that country about removing the monarch’s representatives from any position.

Amendments to the Constitution of Jamaica must be approved by a two-thirds majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, but certain sections, including any relating to the monarchy, can only be amended with a referendum.

As with most Commonwealth meetings, I expect there will be a formal dinner (usually with Camilla in a tiara) either tonight or tmrw night.

Sadly the new Australian PM has decided to not attend CHOGM this year.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall attended the opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games this evening, and arrived in the Aston Martin, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had used on their wedding day ?

The Earl and Countess of Wessex attended as well.
