The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.


UNAM is the largest university in Latin America It have close to 300.000 students and over 34,000 professors.

American engineers Martin Cooper and Raymond S. Tomlinson have been granted the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research. The Jury for the Award announced its decision today in Oviedo.

Their research has contributed significantly to the great technological advances in human communications and has been fundamental in the development of the mobile phone and email, respectively. Two lines of research that have revolutionized the way thousands of millions of people all over the world communicate.

Ismaíl Kadaré, Prince of Asturias Award Laureate for Letters

Albanian writer Ismail Kadaré has been bestowed with the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for Letters. The decision was announced by the Jury in Oviedo today.

Narrator, essayist and poet, Kadaré represents the pinnacle of Albanian literature and who, without forgetting his roots, has crossed frontiers to rise up as a universal voice against totalitarianism. Regarded as one of the greatest European writers and intellectuals of the 20th century, his works have been translated into over forty languages.

Yelena Isinbaeva, 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports

The Russian athlete Yelena Isinbaeva has been bestowed with the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports. The Jury for the Award announced its decision today in Oviedo.

Considered the best pole-vaulter of all times, Yelena Isinbaeva has achieved historic records and has become the only female pole-vaulter ever to clear the 5.00 metre barrier, setting a total of 27 world records in this sport.

Why, that's a very nice surprise, I'm so glad that the Prince of Asturias Award honours Lena. :)
She is truly a legendary athlete. I hope she'll break yet more records in the competitions to come.

The City of Berlin in the anniversary XX of the fall of the Wall there has been rewarded by the Prize Prince of Asturias of the Concord

The Berlin Wall, symbol Europe's reunification, was for decades the worldwide representation of the Cold War. The peaceful revolution, which on 9th November 1989 lead to the fall of the Berlin Wall and subsequently to the reunification of Germany, has captivated millions of people worldwide, contributing significantly towards the reestablishment of the balance between the East and the West.

Sobrescobio's Local Community, Prize to the Exemplary Village of Asturias 2009

Sobrescobio's Local Community has been rewarded by the Prize to the Exemplary Village of Asturias 2009, as there did public today in Oviedo the Juror in charge of the grant of the same one.

Sobrescobio's local community, composed for near 900 inhabitants distributed in eight nucleuses of population, is employed for years at the conservation of the natural, historical, artistic, ethnographic and cultural values of the zone. Throughout last years it has started initiatives destined for the accomplishment of communal works and activities that strengthen the social and solidary development of the neighbors.

The laureates will begin to arrive on Tuesday 20th October. The event is to take place on Friday 23rd October at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.

Ismaíl Kadaré, Prince of Asturias Awards laureate for Letters; José Narro, vice-chancellor of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Prince of Asturias Awards laureate for Communication and Humanities; Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Prince of Asturias Awards laureate for International Cooperation; and Klaus Wowereit, Mayor of Berlin, will deliver their speeches at the 2009 Prince of Asturias Awards grand presentation ceremony, now in its XXIX edition.

During the ceremony, the President of the Foundation Matías Rodríguez Inciarte, and H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias, will also deliver their speeches.

Sixteen concerts scheduled for the XVIII Music Week between 16th and 22nd October

The concerts, which the Prince of Asturias Foundation organizes together with Cajastur, will be held in seven different towns of Asturias.

Oviedo's Príncipe Felipe Auditorium is the venue for the Music Week's finale concert on Thursday 22nd October. The Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra, with the Choir of the Prince of Asturias Foundation, will give the concert. Maestro Maximino Valdés will conduct the orchestra, which will perform Manuel de Falla’s La Vida Breve (The Short Life).

Thank you lula for keeping the thread updated. I'm really pleased to see Norman Foster and David Attenborough being named as recipients, they are both incredible men and thoroughly deserve this award.

I thought awarding Berlin the prize was an interesting choice, like many others no doubt I had forgotten that this year would mark 20 years since the fall of the Wall. It seems hard to imagine a time when such a major European city was dvided in such a way.
