Princess Yohko, along with drivers, signed the back of artwork "Untitled [Red Bull Racing]" for City Circuit Tokyo Bay Auction July 26-28.

Photo: Facebook BINGOInternational

[...]
Red Bull Japan reported this artwork was sold for 3.6 million yen and, excluding operating costs, will be donated to Wings for Life World Run, which supports research into a cure for spinal cord injury. The auction was titled "Back Wall Project presents Wings for Life World Run Charity Auction."

"Back Wall Project" is a new initiative that started with the theme of "creating a more beautiful world." Princess Yohko was the initiator of the project, and the artwork was created in collaboration with contemporary artist Shinsuke Ikeuchi and Red Bull. F1 parts are used in the artwork. The artwork was created and finished in the Red Bull VIP lounge set up at Suzuka Circuit during this year's Japanese Grand Prix.

Going forward, donations from the "Back Wall Project presents Wings for Life World Run" will be converted into vouchers, which will be used to encourage more people to participate in the Wings for Life World Run and raise awareness of the event. The next Wings for Life World Run is scheduled to be held on Sunday, May 4, 2025, and entries are currently being accepted.

Wendywangla bought an art piece. Facebook Reel

I acquired a piece of art that I truly love at this art exhibition. The event was held at Li Xinghua Jade City, and it became even more extraordinary with the arrival of Princess Yohko from the Japanese royal family. Her presence instantly turned the entire event into a highlight of artistic and cultural convergence.

Li Xinghua Jade City has long been known for its exquisite jade and precious art collections. At this exhibition, collectors from around the world gathered to bid on these masterfully crafted art treasures. The arrival of Princess Yohko brought a strong royal atmosphere to the event. She is not only a representative of the Japanese royal family but also an art enthusiast and connoisseur.

[...] After the auction, Princess Yohko graciously signed the piece I had purchased as a keepsake. Her elegance and warmth left a deep impression, and her autograph added immeasurable value to this piece. Having such a special memento makes my experience at this art event incredibly precious.

This auction was not merely a transaction of artworks; it was also a platform for cultural and emotional exchange. The presence of Princess Yohko gave the event even greater significance. Her signature added more stories and context to my art collection and provided endless inspiration for my future journey in collecting.

Princess Akiko gave an interview to Asahi Shimbun's "Think Campus," published on October 16, about her book "Red and Blue Gown: Oxford Study Abroad Diary" (links below include photos)

Part 1: Asahi, thinkcampus.jp
Part 2: Asahi, thinkcampus.jp

Summary
  • similar topics as earlier interviews: impetus to study Japanese art in graduate school, not knowing Japan and Japanese culture, initial loneliness, experiences abroad, tea with Queen Elizabeth II
  • Having aides was normal for her so being alone was suddenly new and handling situations by herself.
  • "I had to solve all the problems that the guards and office staff used to do, such as contacting staff when trains were delayed or exchanging tickets, all by myself. One time, the bathtub in my dorm room overflowed, flooding the bathroom. After turning the tap to turn off the water, I didn't know what to do next, so I just walked around the room screaming, "Aaaaah." It was an experience that made me realize that this is what people do when they panic."
  • I also learned negotiation skills. The kitchen in the dorm where I lived changed from gas to an induction heater, and I could no longer use the cooking utensils I had been using. It would be expensive to buy everything again, so I negotiated with the university and they bought me a shared frying pan (laughs). I also checked the exchange rate every day when money was sent from Japan, and when the yen became even slightly stronger, I said, "Please send it now!"
  • Prince Tomohito paid for her study abroad expenses, so she had to report income and expenditures.
  • He also complained about her frequent returns to Japan because airfare was expensive. Akiko explained she was specializing in Japanese art and needed to research historical materials in Japan. She made sure to book cheap tickets next time.
  • Difficulty with English her first year. Language school with fellow Japanese was fine but Akiko couldn't understand half of what native English speakers said.
  • She practiced and made sure she spoke up at least once in each class, no matter her troubles.
  • Akiko stayed in the same dorm as first and second year students due to security reasons. Sometimes she was irritated at others partying, while she was stressed writing her thesis.
  • At one point I couldn't eat anything. The hospital said I had stress-induced gastritis, but I think it was "doctoral thesis gastritis" (laughs)
  • I realized that I couldn't continue like this, so I went to the British Museum and chatted with the staff there, and worked in a cafe. It seems that I really don't like being alone.
  • She avoided teaching for a long time. "Instead of 'teaching,' I thought I could 'communicate' to students what I find interesting. My successive teachers sowed the seeds that 'studying is interesting,' and watered and nurtured them. I began to think that I would like to take over the job of sowing those seeds."
  • Akiko has high expectations of her students.
  • For example, there are many reports that are questionable, such as those that are submitted with typos marked with corrections, or references that are from the Internet's "Chiebukuro" database. There may be a way to give them a lower score without saying anything, but that would not help students learn. I make sure to clearly explain to them that "a manuscript with typos and omissions is not a finished manuscript," "you must be careful about the credibility of the information," and "that's why we have to deduct a grade." Recently, I've also been teaching them things like, "The staple position for a report should be in the top right if it's written vertically, and in the top left if it's written horizontally. Otherwise, it's difficult to turn the pages"
  • I'm concerned about the tendency to want to know the correct answer easily. We live in an age where you can find the answer by searching, but I want people to think for themselves first.
  • Akiko also learns from her students. During a visit to a Yatsuhashi sweets factory and workshop, I was surprised to hear some original ideas that came up, such as "I want to broadcast it live on video" and "I want to think up an original recipe for fresh Yatsuhashi."
  • Failure is a strength / advice to high school students: "I think there are few people who have already decided what they want to do while they are in high school, but that is why I want you to cherish: "what you really like now." It could be music, sports, or even your favorite idol. If you have one thing that you can be passionate about, I think it will be useful in your life. Also, don't be afraid to take on challenges. Even if you think, "I'm sure I'll fail anyway," don't give up easily. Even if you fail, it's a valuable lesson. It will definitely be useful in five or ten years, and it will also become one of your strengths."

:previous: Princess Akiko will unofficially visit the UK and France November 7th-15th.

The Imperial Household Agency announced the visit on October 17th. Akiko was invited by the Sainsbury Institute of Japanese Art in the UK to attend a International Conference to Commemorate the Institute's 25th Anniversary. Also, in France she will watch a rugby match between Japanese and French rugby teams, as Honorary President of the Japan Rugby Football Union.

Partial schedule according to Jiji and TBS (the first one called Akiko's visit as private):

* November 7th: arriving in the UK
* November 8th: attending a banquet for the Sainsbury Institute of Japanese Art in England
* November 9th: attending a International Conference to Commemorate the Sainsbury Institute's 25th Anniversary. Transfer to France by train on the same day. Attending a match between Japanese and French rugby teams in Paris.
* November 11th: return to the UK.
* November 12th: attending a lecture at the University of Oxford on the relations between the Imperial family and the British Royal family.
* November 15th: return to Japan.

I think her schedule will be bigger, like her 2023 visit to France and Switzerland. Akiko is so energetic; well, this visit is another opportunity to show how important she is for the Imperial Family.

  • Akiko recommends starting with lacquer rice bowls or utensils for beginners.
  • She also showed her favored lacquerware tools: brush pen and obidomes carved as chrysanthemums, plum blossoms and orchids, her personal emblem snow
  • Akiko treasures an obidome which resembles a hagoita she received from grandmother Princess Yuriko
  • Shinyusha activities, making Japanese culture accessible.
  • Akiko noticed many British people could easily talk about Shakespeare regardless of occupation, whereas she doesn’t believe many Japanese could do the same for The Tale of Genji.
  • Akiko meets with many artisans and artists, who all have a strong sense of crisis about preserving Japan’s traditional culture.
  • Holding workshops and hands on experiences for children and university students
