Archduke Joseph August of Austria

Archduke Joseph August Viktor Klemens Maria of Austria, Prince of Hungary and Bohemia (9 August 1872 – 6 July 1962) was a Feldmarschall (field marshal) of the Austro-Hungarian Army and for a short period head of state of Hungary. He was a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, the eldest son of Archduke Joseph Karl of Austria (1833–1905) and his wife Princess Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1846–1927). Joseph August's grandfather had been Palatine Joseph of Hungary (1776–1847), Palatine and Viceroy of Hungary, a younger son of Emperor Leopold II.

The Archduke Joseph Diamond, a 76.02 carat colourless diamond with internal flawless clarity, is named after the Archduke and officially recorded as his property.

Those were the Hapsburg Monarchs,prior to the Habsburg Monarchy the kings of Hungary were crowned at the medieval Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Székesfehérvár.

Sadly it was sacked by the Ottomans in 1543 and not even the royal tombs were spared and were looted.

King Istvan (Stephen) I was crowned in the St. Adalbert Cathedral in Esztergom, Hungary in 1000.

Actually there is a paradox situation. In Hungary the nobile titles aren't allowed to use, and never any of the former properties were given back. Even Prince Antal Esterházy can use aparments in the Palace of Fertőd just with the permission of the Hungarian state. Or another story I heard, that a former Zichy Palace was renovated to a hotel, and the last owner of the palace, the old Count Zichy wanted to visit the building during the renovation, and they didn't let him in, and denied it very rudely. After the hotel was ready, they wanted to invite him to the opening party as a celebrity, to show everybody the "Count" - of course he refused to attend after the previous incident.

The situation in Transylvania, now part of Romania, is totally other: the Transylvanian nobility can get back not just the buildings, but even estates (lands, and more important: forest), and a couple of families are already returned and had some very nice process to rebuild the former palaces: Count Kálnoky, Baron Bánffy in Fugad, Count Teleki in Gernyeszeg, Count Horvath-Tholdy and others. But there is rather problems with the local authorities, which try to hinder the restoration of the estates...

Things didn’t change after the iron curtain was removed.

After 1918 was there ever an attempt by Hungary to have its own independent monarchy?

I don’t think so, but wasn’t there some abortive attempt by the Hungarian government in 1919 to form a federation/dual kingdom with Romania under their King which ultimately came to nothing because King Ferdinand refused to consider it? As Romania was to be awarded large swathes of formerly Hungarian lands including Transylvania by the Versailles Conference to immense Hungarian resentment I really can’t see that working anyway.

Non the less they are just a cadet branch of the Habsburgs while Georg is the younger brother of the Head of the family.

Yes, but their branch was there long before Otto’s branch of the family were making their appearances in Hungary and before Otto’s father was made Emperor.
