The 80s: Fashion Disasters

Shoulderpads in the 1980's were massive, but were also very clearly visible. Sometimes they were removable and i often was people fiddling about with with as they started to ride down the arm!
Queen/Princess Beatrix's clothes always have some padding in the shoulder area- but it is used in a more refined way as part of the construction and shape.

The problem with that dress was that it didn't fit properly. The black dress that the Queen wore, while a similar style, fit her much better. It wasn't that Diana was more 'busty' than HM. It was that Diana's designers didn't know what was required for the fiancee of the Prince of Wales. Royal ladies in the 20th centuries usually didn't show much, if any, cleavage. Diana's dress needed better fitting. Her style at the time wasn't immodest, and I think that she must have been uncomfortable.

Prince Charles exited the car first and was widely quoted as gleefully telling the waiting photographers "Wait until you see this!" or something along those lines....in other words he wasn't exactly dismayed by his fiancée's ultra-sexy evening gown:cool:.

I think it was more that Diana hadn't mastered the art of elegantly exiting a car. Queen Elizabeth had more than her share of gorgeous evening gowns, as did her mother and other royals and aristocrats of the 20th century. Whether strapless, off-the-shoulder or just plain low necklines, decolletage was there in spades. I think the thin straps on many gowns were to anchor sashes and orders.

I love this photo from the 80's and since they were living in separate homes I don't think they checked who was wearing what hat coat or colour.

(you gotta love those shoulder pads)

This 1940 suit was almost prescient in style and was definitely 80's worthy: http://www.fashion-erhttp://www.fa...jpg a.com/images/SocialHistory/qmcoatgrn.jpg

That photograph of HM and Princess Anne is incredible, almost exactly the same shade of yellow.
