It's effectively a named badge to allow entry to the Royal enclosure. Most people when buying tickets will get a tag to attach to their bags/button holes to show where they are allowed to go at Ascot.

I think one year someone didn't wear their badge and they were refused entry to the Royal enclosure. :flowers:

Saw this late . It was actually Diana Princess of Wales, although I think it was just before she married Prince Charles. The man who refused her entry said he didn't look at faces only badges, when asked why he hadn't recognised her.

I was at Ascot on Day 1 - sorry for the bad quality picture it was taken with my phone.

Roll up, roll up, what colour hat will the Queen wear?

Describe Britain to a foreigner.

Well, we have statistics, predictions and odds all based on what colour hat a 91-year-old will wear.

We are expecting Her Majesty to make an appearance at about 14:00 BST.

A minute's silence will be held before the start of racing at Royal Ascot on Tuesday following the recent terror attacks and Grenfell Tower fire. The racecourse says it will also make a £100,000 donation to charities helping those who have been affected.

Racecourse chairman Johnny Weatherby said: "We have all been deeply saddened by recent tragic events around the country.

"At the beginning of this important week for racing, we wish to pay our respects to the victims and offer support to the families who have been so terribly affected."

I always feel the men in those morning suits must be melting in this heat.

Glad Willim and Kate have decided to go again this year. A good turn out of royals on the first day.

It's a green one!

Ladies and gentlemen, it's a green hat, a green hat everybody.

It looks like a lime one to my eye.

The Royal Procession is a wonderful thing, as Her Majesty and the carriages make their way down the course, and now into the Parade Ring.

Edit The Queen has led a silence at Ascot in light of recent tragic events around Britain:

5 of her grandchildren are here today and all 4 of her children which is lovely. Just seen Zara greeting Edward.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are joining the Queen at Royal Ascot today.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are also attending the first day of the famous Berkshire meet, which attracts hundreds of thousands of punters.

Following the arrival of the Queen and royal party in the parade ring, the crowds are paying their respects to those who died in the Grenfell Tower fire and the London and Manchester terror attacks with a minute's silence.

The Queen marked her official birthday on Saturday by issuing a statement acknowledging the "succession of terrible tragedies" and observed a minute's silence before the Trooping the Colour ceremony began.

LOVE the beautiful soft colors on the ladies and the greens on the Queen and the Countess of Wessex. Beatrice looks like a vision in her outfit and hat. Zara toned it down for the first day, but love the blue on her!

Either that or both women just happened to get a carriage driven by horses with bad gas. So many good captions could be made out of that photo. :D

Did they pull some sort of mid carriage seating switch a roo?

There is a prank on the States called a Chinese Firedrill when if you are at a red light, you all jump out of the car, run around it and get back in any order before the light changes. This is like the Ascot version.

 I can only imagine how much fun they have together at family get togethers.

I think it was after they had got in the carriage just before they arrive at the gates of Royal Ascot. William and Sophie obviously decided to swap seats and the carriage probably wobbled. It's such a funny image.

I have to say when I was watching the procession, the third carriage with the Wessex's and Cambridge's looked to be the most animated. They had a good bunch in there!

Definitely, I wonder what the atmosphere was like in the York Princesses and Wales' couples carriage.

That picture of Sophie and Kate is so fun...love that.

There didn't seem to be much chatter in their carriage.

A lot of Windsors on show today. I spotted Princess Michael, Lord and Lady Frederick and I think the Duchess of Gloucester.

Beautiful royal turnout today. Mrs. Middleton was in attendance in the Royal Enclosure as well.

Has someone already asked where Harry is? Seems like I remember hearing he's out of the country right now?
