One wonders if Charlene had worn the dress that Caroline wore, would she be commended for being a risk taker, fresh, etc.

I know this crowd, . I think not. Charlene would have been raked over the coals.

Which crowd? The ones that love Charlene? They sure would have said she looked gorgeous.
Then you have rosana and me that would say that she looked horrible. That's what you are saying, right?
Anyway, it doesn't matter what rosana and I say, because, you know, Charlene is gorgeous....and i don't think she could pull that dress off ...

And i said fresh and jovial for Caroline because she needs it, she is a 54 year old woman.

I stand by my statement, and I didn't mention any names but used simply said "crowd." So really, I am not sure the reason for the attitude.

Nor did I say that Charlene looked gorgeous. Frankly, I didn't care for either dress.

Well, i thought crowd would more than 2 persons but ok.
I just answered COUNTESS that seems to answer me everytime i criticize Charlene.

Of course, Charlene didn't bring glamour. She looked wonderful and Caroline, whom, I think is beautiful, looked like someone wrapped in an old quilt. A bad joke. Every piece of material they found on the floor, worked into a gown and a fool who paid for it. Grace was elegant, always, as Charlene. Grace was impecable, she didn't wear clowns' clothes. Caroline is beautiful, but the "it" doesn't work, when you dress like a material discard.
Caro is a beautiful court jester and was attired in the syle of Henri Matisse and the Fauve movement.I hope this comaprison between Caro and Charlene stops as it is like comparing apples to oranges.[out of place and impossible]

Grace had "it" -- whatever that includes and more.

If you look at the Grace Kelly fashion of the 50's, celebrated for its minimalism and clean lines, and then the Princess Grace mode with fantastic headpieces, feathers, ruffles, etc that she usually sported at balls, I'm sure that qualifies as taking risks. It just did not look like risks because she was so damn beautiful in whatever she chose, and was always bigger than the events that she graced.

The principality's balls for me appeared much grander and bigger events when Grace was around. There was an aura of magic and mystery. Besides, Princess Grace most likely had her gowns made specifically for the events and not chose something from the runway. I think Princess Grace took these events personally, as these were her events for her principality, and took great lengths to be at her most spectacular. She was not willing to concede the attention to anyone else. And if that included looking safe because she was her usual impeccable self, then that's okay. Better do that than be talked about for wearing something off.

Very well put. I read that Princess Grace missed the Hollywood period movies and that was one reason she liked costume balls, acted out her fantasies in an almost child-like way, letting her imagination go loose and also went all out for the important galas of Monaco and her elegance and attention to detail was non-pareil. I tend to think that that kind of attention to detail has disappeared. And having lived in Hollywood permitted her in her new role to reconstruct the "folie" of that place in that era, while knowing what the principality expected of her and never disappointing.

I am hanging on to what I know is a slim hope - that Charlene once she has settled into her role ( & perhaps begun to raise a family) will be able to bring back something of the earlier days such as those wonderful costume balls. I personally don't think it's is a good idea to try & compare Charlene with Grace, but I find myself doing this partly because the media encourages it. I was looking at some photos of Grace at the Red Cross Ball in her earlier years as a Princess ( see thread Red Cross Ball retrospective) , & yes she looks beautiful & clearly has the persona of a Princess of Monaco - but Hollywood & training as an actress helped her. However her "golden days" when she established Monaco as the place to be/ introduced the balls etc came a little later.

That's interesting.
I would love to see another Rose Ball or Red Cross Ball with the princesses dressed with those sort of gowns.

Glamour or not, one thing we see this year was that there was more 800 persons they made the full room, there were not more 200 persons the last ten years, the benefits entered for the Red cross, the guests were very glad to be there. I think that the persons who lived far away from Monaco cannot see what it means.
Red cross ball and the success of the history of the wedding in museum, Nice matin and monaco news said that they did not think that there would be so many people at this show, there are many people each day, local people but also many people of France, germany, east europe, english and american and so.
The show of the glory of the royal courts makes less entries than the wedding show. in this show there are many thingsof the other courts ( england, spanish and so) there are the history of the famous royal couple until the couple Princess Grace and Rainier and there are many photos of the wedding of Albert and Charlene on the big glass of the grimaldy forum.. I visited the two shows, the most visited rooms in the glory of the royal courts show were the rooms where there is the history of the couple Grace rainier and the photos of the wedding. of Charlene and Albert
My idea is on the true facts and we will see the other years to come.

So Charlene's beauty, simplicity, and everything she has has made Monaco survived? Wow, that's something.
Don't you think that maybe people went to see Oceanographic Museum and not *exactly* their expo?
I don't know why they had to put all their extravaganza exhibit in the Oceanographic Museum.

Anyway, back to topic, which is the Red Cross Ball not what the wedding has done to Monaco, i think it was interesting to see Caroline there. It's been quite a time since she last went.

Charlene looked nice and her hairstyle was elegant. As for Caroline, it's time for her to step back and let Charlene take control. This was Charlene's first ball and she is doing well so far despite the horrific accusations. Second, the Red Cross Ball isn't the way it used to be, with the great and the good scrambling to attend and then have fun. Monaco isn't the place to be anymore. I think Charlene made for a good hostess and while Caroline will be the doyenne of the Princely Family, she is not longer First Lady and the Princess of Monaco now.

I am hanging on to what I know is a slim hope - that Charlene once she has settled into her role ( & perhaps begun to raise a family) will be able to bring back something of the earlier days such as those wonderful costume balls.

I'm sure she will since it will be one of her major duties as Princess. Then there's the other engagements, charities, and other things that will occupy her time. I think it hasn't been so widely covered because of all the rest of the chaos going on right now. The Eighties were the golden years for attractive royalty, mainly since everyone was rich and secure enough to end up being able to pay attention and live vicariously through them. They could afford the magazines, memorabilia, and then watch televisions that ended up covering them. It's really the end of a golden time, unless the economy picks up; if the economy does pick up, then the public will have time and interest in royalty again.

Right now, the super rich are not interesting in jet setting, certainly not in an overtly public manner like in the Eighties.

Well, it's my believe P. Caroline won't attend. As the ball takes place on Charlotte's birthday, i tink this will give her the perfect excuse not to attend the ball... Although i also believe that Charlotte prefers to celebrate her birthday with her friends rather than with her mother... O well, let's wait and see.

i am really glad to see Stephanie!! It has been a long time since i've seen her!

The thread for today's Red Cross Ball is now open!

The Princely Palace has announced that - as in previous years -

Prince Albert, Princess Charlene and Princess Stephanie will attend the ball.

Nice to see also Princess Stephanie attending the gala evening of red cross.

No P Caroline, then... :ermm: :ermm: :ermm:

Really looking forward to seeing Stephanie this evening. I wonder if Pauline might attend too.

Charlene's gown looks interesting. Not a fan of her hairstyle

Yes I'm liking it, but would have liked some earrings. Any sign of Stephanie?

Not a fan of the sequined top half of Charlene's dress. It's not really a good color for either.

Well no sign of Stephanie. In some of the arrival pics there appeared to be someone in a silver dress just behind Albert, but I think we would have had a pic by now if she was there. I know we have discussed this in previous years, but the event is sadly a long way from the occasion it was. I guess we can always rely on Shirley Bassey to continue to support it.
This is one of the photos I mean
Woman in silver dress

It is not because there are not Caroline or Stephanie you love so much that there is not glamour and it is sad. It is sad for you yes.. Now there is a new princely couple and other celebrities you did not know because they are not american people.
This morning in the newspaper monaco Matin, an article about the red cross gala said that many people returned to the red cross gala in 2011 and in 2012 this article said that it is the fact that there is a new princess. You must use to it.
I will say you that just the years after their wedding, there was only the couple Rainer and Grace at the gala, After, Rainier and Grace saw again Princess Antoinette and the sister of Rainer came back in the middle of the tears 60.
There was also in attendance Chris Levine and his wefe at the gala of this evening.

They look very happy. That bothers some. What a pity. Obviously, Caroline and Stephanie are not present, or not outlandish enough to be photographed.

Well, so far a disappointment... the princely couple offers a true picture of loneliness... a sad reminder of the glorious glamour and joy of past days!

Loneliness for whom? They were the picture of happiness and closeness in London and could not get any closer to each other at this event unless Albert carried Charlene.
