Queen Paola Jewellery

I think this is the necklace she has worn several times for the last royal events - and it seems to be only a necklace.
What puzzles me a little bit is that Q Paoloa always mixes platinum jewelry like her tiara/necklace with yellow gold bracelets - I find this a little unusual.:ermm:

It is probably because she doesn't own any bracelets made from platinum! The Belgian Royal Family Jewel Collection is not that extensive either - Queen Paola appears to own only three or our tiaras, maybe less.

Gosh, Lilian must have been really p!#$*d to have to let go of the jewels she wore when there was no queen...

I doubt it - she had an extensive collection of her own and very little was relinquished to Queen Fabiola ! Furthermore her collection seems to have been sold after her death. There was little love lost between the Princess de Rèthy and her step-children.

It's likely that Lilian's jewels were more valuable than the jewellery collections of Queens Fabiola and Paola combined.

Oh, I was sure she usurped the royal jewels and was given on the head for selling some

She could use the Nine Province tiara as a bracelet if she wanted something plaitum and with diamonds - Lilian used to wear the piece a lot this way since she wasn't "allowed" to use it as a tiara. Perhaps she simply doesn't care that much about jewels in general

she has only 3 tiaras

the modern italian tiara/bracelet
the small diamond tiara/necklace
the diamond bandeau of HM Queen Elisabeth

The Diadem of the 9 Provinces or the Belgium Empire Tiara is a sort of loan, only the Queen may wear it

Shame that she's a Queen but only owns few tiaras.I personally don't like any of the tiaras she has worn.

Was Mathilde given one of Paola's tiaras upon marriage?

No, Paola lent her one tiara for her wedding. Since then CP Mathilde wears her own diamond laurel wreath tiara (I've read that it was a gift from group of Belgian aristocrats).

Did she wear à tiara before her she was married

Paola's coral/diamond necklace with gold sea shell pendant markedly intrigued me. I wonder if the queen got it as a present on her recent 75th birthday... In any case it is beautifully evocative of the Ruffo di Calabria family's coat of arms: http://www.theroyalforums.com/forums/f181/queen-paola-s-family-ruffo-di-calabria-13823.html#post690591

This pair of different earrings in the shape of sun(?) and moon looks awesome. Does anyone have a clue which gemstones they feature?

I have noticed the Queen doesn't wear the Nine Provinces Tiara frequently? I wonder if it's uncomfortable, or just prefers Queen Elisabeth's bandeau. I personally think the Nine Provinces looks wonderful on her, suits her hairstyle very well.

I think neither Paola nor Albert care about their family's jewel collection being so small. After all we should have seen at least a small piece added.
For example I'not wrong Mathilde has two new necklaces.

But my question is:
Why was Lilian allowed to sell the jewels?
Did she do it without the royal family's knowledge?

What about jewels Queen Paola got during state visit to Congo? It was said it consist diamond necklace, earings and bracelets. Why those jewellery has never been worn by Paola? I know it was recognised as state property to be use by Queen (as Provinces tiara). Maybe she allowed Mathilde to use it? We saw some new necklaces on her. Anybody knows?

I believe the Congo gift was considered politically incorrect so has likely been consigned to the vaults for a long long time.

But why was it considered politically incorrect ? Aren't the Belgian royals allowed to accept foreign gifts?

It has to do with the complicated political, social and economical situation in Congo. I don't know details of the situation, but diamonds are produced under awful social circumstances. There were brutal conflicts about the country's resources, and the income from the so-called 'blood-diamonds' is used to finance armed conflicts. At the same time the population is suffering from extreme poverty.
From a diplomatic point of view it was impossibly not to accept the gift. But I don't think that the suite will ever be worn.

As i understand it from this
Koningin Paola kreeg diamanten van president Kabila | vandaag.be
the problem was that the gift that there was a lot of controversy about the congolese government allegedly spending lavish amounts of money on parties etc while ignoring the needs of the people.
A belgian politician remarked upon that and this created a cooled relationship between the congolese and belgian goverments...
In this light, the fact that Q. Paolo received an expensive jewelry set (also other expensive gifts were given) was regarded as awkward and i could well imagine that that is the reason for the jewelry not to be worn...

Thank you. But do you think that we will never see them on future generations?

It is difficult to say, but I don't think so.
Fabiola was widowed, and she also always had very strict religious views. For example she never wore worldly orders.

I believe that Paola will hand over the Nine-Provinces tiara to the new queen, and will keep wearing the diamond bandeau of Queen Elisabeth and other personal jewels.

:previous:
This is also the only big piece she has. She has only 2 diamond necklaces which she uses to wear with the nine provinces tiara.
