Queen Máxima, Current Events 3: November 2021 - present

Nice to see the queen there, and in military gear even. It seems even the lady-in-waiting adjusted the outfit ;). HM was clearly not enjoying the glass of genever too much.

As Tina Nijkamp noted, Queen Máxima´s Dutch had to be subtitled and altered on RTL.

The Queen joked she wanted to ´hit´ (slaan) her husband instead of 'defeat' (verslaan) at a game.
Later on she says 'wil die niet' instead of 'lukt hem niet' (he doesn't want to vs. he is not able to)

In her podcast she says that it seems the Queen's language skills are actually regressing.

Last month linguist Josée Coenen said last month in Blauw Bloed that in some ways the Queen's accent progressed and initially she was a quick student.but she also now makes errors in thing she used say correctly in the past. For example the order of words, she leaves out articles. She overuses the words 'echt' and 'ja'.

Coenen adds that she thinks Máxima should be a role model for other migrants. She mentions the example of Achmed Aboutaleb, the mayor of Rotterdam who was born in Marocco. She says: 'imagine he would speak like Máxima does, he would never have become the mayor of Rotterdam'. She does add that of course some mistakes will be nearly impossible not to make for those who are not Dutch native speakers, even when they have reached a high level.

Royalty replorter Simone Lamain says that a reason may be that for her UN work she speaks a lot of English and at home with her daughters she speaks Spanish - as we overheard at the recent photo shoot.

80% of the respondants at the mediacourant think it is time for the Queen to do something about her language skills and start an intensive course at the nuns in Vught (their language institute Regina Coeili is the most prestigeous language center of the country).

Today, June 26, Queen Máxima paid a visit to the Circular Friesland Association, "a partnership between various companies and organizations in the field of sustainability and circularity":

It would indeed be a smart move to focus a bit more on her Dutch language skills. Her Dutch has been detoriating for quite some time. Incorrect use of prepositions and articles have been common for a long time, however, completely using wrong words or phrases (which are quite common - not exceptionally difficult or rare) seems more recent. Nonetheless, we are still able to understand her heavily-accented and somewhat butchered Dutch.
