What a wonderful, wonderful, thread. Thanks! Every time I see pictures of Diana I'm again amazed at her poise, her natural elegance, her radiant presence. I don't think, and in the eighties didn't think, that she was that stylish: I often thought her outfits were a bit matronly or old fashioned for the twenty-something she was during the height of her popularity. But amazingly, always wore the clothes, they never wore her. In short, it may or may not be fair to compare Diana with the current crop of 'commoners-turned-bona-fide-princesses', but somehow they don't share Diana's unique karma, it has to be said. I certainly do appreciate the current crown princesses for their own unique personalities, but can't help think when I see pictures like in this thread, that "they sure don't make them like this anymore". just my 2 cents..

I enjoyed looking at all the hats,there are some wonderful hats but also a few awful one's.

You are quite right. A few awful ones, but mostly elegant and stylish. She had poise and an elan that no one else seems to have. She wore the hats, they never wore her or looked like something from outer space with a million feathers. She never seemed to wear a hat that was gigantic and too big for her. I think she developed a great instinct for what looked well and what didn't and she didn't wear outlandish hats.

I agree. If she were alive today I like to think she still would be wearing elegant hats, and not the sideways-plate-on-your-head look, etc.

I agree I like the 1996-97 hairstyles best simple but classic and sophisticated.

A new hat....

The pink hat with purple edge, although listed as "a new hat" is the same one Diana wore on other occasions but the other way round! She wore it with the bow at the back and the turned up part of the brim at the front, to Ascot and also to a church service where her sons were with her (sorry I can't remember the dates)

Sirhon, that's very interesting. Why do you think that was? Maybe her personal tiring of being showy or maybe her status?

Her status didn't really change after the divorce except she lost her HRH but the Princess was attending less formal engagements and therefore it really wasn't necessary for her to wear hats.
