It's not a silly question at all . Normal officers, when they pass out (graduate) do not get a medal. All they get is a different coloured hat band or hat and their rank pips (insignias).
I know nothing about the US Army or Navy (or much about the British Navy) to be honest.

They are also awarded for anyone serving in any campaign. That's why there are service medals for the troops who were/are in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sorry - I forgot about campaign medals.

I think though that British/Australia troops receive far fewer medals than do their American counterparts.

Did anyone else see that show JAG when they had that Aussie lawyer, Brumbie? The number of medals/ribbons her was wearing would have made him the most decorated member of the Australian military in our history or at least close to it.

That is the million dollar question.
It seems he has indicated that he would like to be a career soldier (stay in for the full 22 years) but, he has also said he is interested in doing some charity work to help the children of Lesotho.
I should think that like a lot of 21 year olds, as he gets older it could all change.

His immediate future after leaving Sandhurst will be to do the specific training relating to his chosen area of the army - infantry, cavalry etc.

Then he will join his regiment and do what they are doing I suppose.

No you don't have to speak Welsh to be in the Welsh Guards . Which is just as well, otherwise the majority of those serving with them, would be out of a job.

The Royal Scots Greys amalgamated with the 3rd Carabiniers, PoW Dragoon Guards in 1971 and became the Royal Scottish Dragoon Guards.
This is all set to change when all 6 Scottish regiments are to be disbanded or amalgamated to become the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

I assumed that he may want to go there since his father is the prince of wales. Also I remember reading about him going to visit Sandhurst before he enrolled and he asked about the Welsh Guards and the army guy said he had to learn welsh.

I think the guy must have been joking about speaking Welsh to join the Welsh Guards. Even in the Scottish regiments they don't have to speak Gaelic.

Most people don't know which regiment he wants to join, we don't even know if he has applied for or been accepted by anyone yet.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Harry, younger son of heir-to-the-throne Britain's Prince Charles, will join the elite Household Cavalry when he completes his officer training in April, Buckingham Palace said on Wednesday.

The Cavalry is made up of two of the British Army's most senior and oldest regiments -- The Blues and Royals and The Life Guards -- and is tasked with protecting Queen Elizabeth on ceremonial and state occasions, meaning the prince may have to guard his own grandmother.

The 21-year-old, who joined the elite Sandhurst military academy last year, will serve in the Blues and Royals with the aim of becoming an armored reconnaissance troop leader, a statement said.

Prince Harry is to join the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry, Clarence House has confirmed.

The 21-year-old third in line to the throne hopes to become an Armoured Reconnaissance Troop Leader at the forefront of Army operations.
He will move into the historic Army outfit after completing his Sandhurst training in April.

The Cavalry is the Army's most senior and oldest regiment - made up of both the Blues and Royals and the Life Guards - and is tasked with protecting the Queen on ceremonial and state occasions, meaning the Prince may have to guard his own grandmother.

Prince Harry to join Blues and Royals

So now we all know, he is going to drive tanks and ride horses. Not really accurate. If he gets his wish and his further training goes ok, he will be in a Scimitar reconnaissance vehicle with it's 30mm cannon, the Spartan or even the Striker anti tank guided weapons vehicle for some of the time. He may never be on ceremonial duty.

I'm told that most of the men use plain water or soap and water to get the camo paint off, but some officers use makeup removal creams and have also been known to moisturise afterwards!

It is Unlikely he will volunteer to the join the Mounted Division, so no, not at this time. After his initial training as a Troop Leader in the Formation Reconnaissance Division, he could be posted (transfered) there with the rest of his men.

Yes apparently he is joining the fighting unit, we shouldn't be that surprised after all, Andrew faught in the Falklands War.
