The above article sounds as if Prince Charles will have to live with modern architecture. Qatar has invested a lot in Great Britain from what the article said.

Qatar is built in the modern architectural flavor. Maybe Prince Charles can keep trying to change their minds and the Qatar Royal Family will compromise in design.:rolleyes::):rolleyes:

I don't understand why parties can not listen to each other and compromise because it means so much to the people who live there!!!! I don't like all the companies that own American companies. But we are global now and things are changing and maybe not for the better.

Prince Charles in my opinion is a true RENAISSANCE MAN OF OUR TIME!!!:rolleyes::):rolleyes:

In a word, yes if all they want to build is ultra modern disasters. What is there to love about steel and glass? No wonder they moved her away from Culture! :ROFLMAO:

The headline to this article doesn't seem to be borne out by the comments quoted from various architects. Also it seems a bit much to expect instant reaction to what was a complex (4page) discussion of the challenges faced by architects and all of us by the combined climate and credit crunch, in which he not only criticised modernists for being obsessed with form & ignoring local input into planning decisions but also classicists. Prince Charles has forced the architects of a controversial 'modernist' development in west London to back down over the scheme.
The head of Qatari Diar, the company developing the west London site, bowed to pressure after the Prince of Wales wrote to the prime minister of Qatar criticising plans for the £1bn development.
Ghanim bin Saad al-Saad said he was confident that a solution to the problem could be found that would be acceptable to all parties.

Plans for the £3billion Chelsea barracks development were scrapped today in an astonishing victory for Prince Charles.

Site owner Qatari Diar officially withdrew its application for Britain's most expensive housing development just a week before it was due to go before planning chiefs.
The decision follows pressure from the Prince of Wales, who had criticised the design for being too modern.

Qatari Diar, the development arm of the Qatar royal family, today released a statement exclusively to the Standard, declaring: "After extensive and ongoing consultations, Qatari Diar is withdrawing its current planning application for the site."

Qatari Diar has promised greater consultation with residents, who felt their concerns had been ignored.
Prince Charles's Foundation for the Built Environment will act as consultants on the choice of new planners.

I am so glad Prince Charles won this particular fight; that monstrous buildings (as seen in the plans) would look horrible, especially next to the beautiful Royal Hospital.
Hopefully, the consultants from Price Charles's Foundation for the Built Environment will be able to design something more acceptable and suitable for the area.

We didn’t have to wait for long for the report from Daily Mail. It is surprisingly positive though, as are all comments but one. Quinlan Terry's version looks a lot better; I hope the final design will be something similar to it.


Victory for Prince Charles as £3billion Chelsea Barracks development is scrapped

Prince Charles has secured a shock victory over a multi-billion pound modernist development today after plans for a luxury project at Chelsea Barracks were scrapped.
The site in the heart of London was bought for £1billion in Britain's most expensive property deal, but owners Qatari Diar withdrew their plans after a high-profile battle with the Prince of Wales.
The owners will now invite the submission of new design. It is predicted that the site could be worth £3billion once it is completed.

More than 450 complaints had been lodged with Westminster Council, and a campaign group was also launched.
Georgine Thorburn from the Chelsea Barracks' Action Group said: 'It's been ten long months of blood, sweat and tears, but it's finally paid off. We are delighted by the news.'
She added: 'We obviously wouldn't have got anywhere without the marvellous support from Prince Charles. We really are enormously grateful.'

Having visited the Chelsea Barracks I am so pleased that that beautiful area won't be spoilt by the planned building.

That type of development has its place - but not in historical areas of London.

I do think that new developments should be in keeping with what is already there.

Former Planning Minister Nick Raynsford warned that Charles had acted in an 'almost feudal way' in persuading Middle Eastern developers to drop plans to turn the 13-acre former Chelsea Barracks site into a glass-and-steel complex of 552 flats.

Trust Daily Mail to come up with a criticism. :nonono:

However the comments at the end of the article (and their ratings) clearly show that the majority believe Charles had every right to express his opinion. Most are thankful for not letting those ugly modernist buildings spoil the otherwise beautiful area.
Few think Charles acted in a 'feudal way', and those few have received negative ratings.
